A red eye? I don't see a red eye. Don't they go away when you do a "disk cleanup"?

Cookies are stored in a txt file called Cookies.txt. You can open it and delete all cookies or a particular line (cookie). Your browser has a cookie option. You can select no cookies, warnings, and other options.

Look in Tool, Internet Options, Advanced. Some version have an option to use or not use Cookies, but sites like this sometimes require use of cookies to save settings. I also just found a selection that deletes temorary internet files every time I close the browser. That'll help you, too.

Right click on the cookie.txt file, choose properties, and check the 'read only' box.

This way your browser still thinks it is accepting cookies, but they disappear from the cookie file when you close the browser.

Some sites get around this by storing cookies in the internet cache, so you have to periodically purge the cache also.

In IE v6, Tools, Internet Options, General tab, click on "Delete Cookies".

gordon has a great method for allowing cookies, but deleting when you leave the browser.

To change cookie options, go to Tools, Internet Options, Privacy tab, Advanced, check box to "Override automatic cookie handling" and make selections. You can also override cookie handling for individual sites by clicking the Edit button.

You can also move the slide bar up to Block all cookies, if you want.

Hope this helps.

To delete your cookies, do this:

Navigate to c:\windows\temporary internet files
Delete everything in this directory.
Answer “yes” to the warning about deleting cookies
Navigate to c:\windows\cookies
Delete them there too.

To disable cookies in Internet Explorer 5, do this:
Go to tools/internet options, security tab
Select Internet, and click the Custom Level button
Scroll down to cookies.
Scroll all the way down to Scripting if you want to disable Java while you’re there.

To allow Thebackpacker.com to use cookies, even though you just disabled them, do this:
Back to the security tab, click Local Intranet
Click sites button
Click advanced button
Add the site http://www.thebackpacker.com/

To allow your bank, shopping, credit card sites to use cookies, do this:
Same as above, except click on Trusted Sites instead of Local Intranet.

Haven't tried IE6 yet.

The latest version of some web sites show different content if you have cookies disabled, sometimes not letting you link or no access to the site at all.
So decide how badly you want cookies disabled.

If you are in monkeywrenching mood leave your cookies enabled and edit the cookie.text file. Pick a string of characters in the middle of the cookie 3 or 4 characters long and reverse or change them. The next time you visit that site the server will read the cookie and get bogus data because it may think you are someone else. This involves a little time and hassle, so I don't usually do it unless a site really ticked me off.

Nobody would shop at a conventional retail store that won't let you in the door unless you divulge personal information, so I wonder why webmasters insist on cookies enabled to visit.

OK, I'm lost, what are cookies and do I need them? I found a huge file of them on my MAC. Will I mess something up if I delete them and are they harming anything by being there?

No, you will not mess anything up by deleting the cookies. Cookies are little files that are left from websites and other programs that will help the website and progams load faster. Cookies are also little beacons for websites to see who you are and what you machine is. For the most part they are harmless, but they can fill your temp file over time. In windows, there is a "file manager" that will help you delete all unnessary files. You should look for something like that on your Mac. I am sure, being a Mac they would name it something different.

Depending on what version of Internet Explorer you are using (if you are using Explorer), you can go to tools, internet options, then from there you can dig around and find the cookie settings

Best way to disable cookies is to let them sit around for a month or two and they go stale on their own.

Oh?
