I just got kicked out

“So I just got kicked out of class, because my friend next to me asked me a question. The teacher flipped out! I have never been kicked out of class in my entire life! I am a good kid! All of you who know me know that!

The only thing I can figure out is I had smile on my face, but when did it become a sin to smile?

She said that I can back next week with a better attitude. First off this is the first 8am class that I have ever had a good attitude in. I dont understand....”

You have a right to attend the classes that you have paid for, unless you are threatening lives or something serious like that.”

“It was college, and I am one of her best students. I talked to her after class, and I still do not understand what happened. She tends to flip out easily about little things. And it tends to be more at girls than at guys. Everyone in the class didnt understand what happened. I apoligized, which I really had no reason to apoigize, because I was simply being myself.”

Next, I suspect that the prof was getting a little impatient over people not listening, had given a couple of warnings and waited until the class settled down and was at least looking at her (?) and then bopped the first people who were still looking at each other instead of her.
It's standard practice - you don't penalise the whole class, you dump on the dummies who hadn't figured it out and you made your point. Right? I'm not saying you're wrong, but if you're over 15 years of age, you are quite capable of avoiding being the dummies. Right? But what do I know - I've only been doing it for 25 years.”

I've had professors like that also in college, and bet many people have.

All joking aside (which is no fun whatsoever and I try to avoid that) I agree with those that have suggested that it was a classroom management issue. It's very likely that it wasn't personal nor that it was directly related to the severity of your offence taken individually. It likely was viewed by the prof as an action necessary at the time to maintain overall discipline. I would guess that if you had apologised profusely immediately and promised not to do it again (and appeared sincere) she likely would have backed down and let you stay. Contingent upon your follow through of course.

I'm just guessing, though. I wasn't there. Usually what looks like totally irrational and unpredictable behaviour to the students isn't that at all from the prof's perspective. Point of view really is everything sometimes.

“On a more serious note, I have been teaching full time at the college level for 20 years. I have never experienced a case of what I would call "disrespect."

I have no problem politely getting students' attention and will halt conversations that are disruptive, but what's the big deal.

I do have colleagues that do not tolerate certain things they consider disrespectful such as coming in late or leaving early. In some cases it probably stems from their background (e.g., military training, parochial school, etc.).”
