“WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Displeased by the government's approval of student visas for two hijackers in the September 11 attacks, President Bush has ordered Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge and Attorney General John Ashcroft to "get to the bottom of this immediately," an aide said Wednesday.

White House deputy press secretary Scott McClellan said the president noted the reports that the Immigration and Naturalization Service sent student visa approval forms this week to the Florida flight school where the two trained to carry out the terrorist plot. The school received the approval notice Monday, exactly six months after the New York attacks.

Mohammed Atta, 33, and Marwan Al-Shehhi, 23, learned to fly at Huffman Aviation in Venice, Florida, in July 2000 and were aboard separate flights that struck the World Trade Center towers.

"The president is very displeased," McClellan said. "He wants to know how and why it happened and wants it fixed. The president has directed Gov. Ridge to work with the attorney general and get to the bottom of this immediately. This is unacceptable Republican incompetence."

“I heard an interview on NPR this morning with director of international student affairs and San Diego State University. Seems the school was targeted by the INS due to a large number of expired student visas, there were also ties to the Al Quaeda by some of the students.

The school was asked to verify if the students had current visas, the director said that his responsibility was to the students, it was the governments job to find out if they were terrorists. The school had not sent a list of foreign students to the INS in over 1o years.”

It is good to see that there is a possibility it will get more widespread public scrutiny now. I don't hold out much hope however, most citizens don't feel that their lives are directly affected by the activities of the INS.”

“Even if they find incompetence within the INS, what can they do about it. Sure, they can fire a few upper managment types, throw in some window dressing; but the truth of the matter is that the public employee unions are too strong for even the president to go up against. Who the hell let these people organize anyway? When have public employees ever had to really fight for good working conditions and a fair wage. My father worked a REAL union job; he came home tired and dirty every night, not these guys! I say can em' ! I'll gladly accept their base wages and benefits; almost unmatched in the private sector. I've met enough federal civilians, while serving, to know the type. They make more than the average amercan, but all you hear is wah wah wah spilling forth from thier angry pieholes. Throw em' to the wolves, and let them take their chances in the job market like the rest of this country.

However, I do seem to recall some Congressional action a couple of years ago having a significant positive affect on the IRS's attitude. An attitude adjustment at the INS is long overdue. They've been called to the carpet on chronic incompetence in the court systems lately. Maybe it's time they got it from all branches of Federal govt. It might do them a little good and it sure couldn't hurt. We'll see what develops.”

“WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Four top officials of the Immigration and Naturalization Service were replaced Friday amid a firestorm over the agency's letters confirming student visas for two of the September 11 hijackers.

Justice Department officials told CNN that changes were already planned at INS, but they acknowledged the government's frustration and embarrassment over what one aide termed "the debacle" had hastened the personnel moves.

INS Commissioner James Ziglar, who some key lawmakers criticized this week, officially announced that the executives were being shifted to other positions.

In a written statement announcing the changes, Ziglar said, "The breakdown in communication highlighted by this week's events at INS is unacceptable and will not be allowed."

The four INS executives being reassigned are identified by government officials as Jeff Weiss, Mike Pearson, William Yates and Michael Hreniak.

The agency drew criticism from all directions when Huffman Aviation, a Florida flight school, disclosed it had received letters Monday from the INS confirming the approval of student visas for terrorist hijackers Mohamed Atta and Marwan Al-Shehhi. Authorities say Atta and Al-Shehhi piloted the jetliners that crashed into the World Trade Center's twin towers six months ago.

At a news conference Wednesday, Bush said he was stunned and "plenty hot" when he read about the matter.

"The INS needs to be reformed, and it's one of the reasons why I called for the separation of the paperwork side of the INS from the enforcement side," he said. "And obviously, the paperwork side needs a lot of work. It's inexcusable."

Attorney General John Ashcroft, meanwhile, asked leaders on Capitol Hill for the authority to fire INS officials -- a power that had been dropped during the appropriations process.

"It is essential that I have the authority to quickly discipline or terminate individuals for acts of negligence, mismanagement or disregard for Department of Justice policies," Ashcroft said in letters to House and Senate committees.

Mr. Ashcroft, when you gonna terminate Dubya for his negligence in protecting the country? Dubya is negligent in protecting Americans in the 9/11 disaster. Dubya is negligent in protecting American investors in the Enron debacle. Dubya is negligent for failing to protect the American Social Security System.
