Earthquake Day Here!1View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 25 of 25 messages posted.
Just felt my second quake today “Just felt my second quake today here in Southern California. This one was a 3.6 centered 1 mile south of my house On the map, my house is on the edge of the map directly north of the red mark. If anything bigger happens, I just wanted to let you all know how much I enjoyed TrailTalk.” 12:10:05 AM 3/17/02 “Phil, I hope you didn't see "Alantis". Sleep tight tonight :o)” 12:22:13 AM 3/17/02 “I've always wanted to experience an earthquake. The closest I ever came was sitting next to my uncle Paul after he ate a can of beans.” 1:21:59 AM 3/17/02 “OK, there are some things I don't miss about living in California.” 7:43:18 AM 3/17/02 “I bet it is strange to be in a earthquake? Whats it feel like? 8|” 5:35:55 PM 3/17/02 “feeels like when a big truck drives past yer house. When its 6.0+it feels like many trucks!” 6:56:32 PM 3/17/02 “I would like that.Only if I was in the middle of a field and there was nothing to fall on top of me 8)” 6:58:55 PM 3/17/02 “So Phil,.. are you still with us? I hope all`s well!” 7:24:17 PM 3/17/02 “you feel it a lot better when yer in a structure.your house really magnifies the amplitude of the shockwaves.Kind of like riding a surfboard.” 7:39:32 PM 3/17/02 “Ok, I haven't heard or read anything about California sliding into the sea. On the other hand, Phil hasn't posted yet today.” 7:47:26 PM 3/17/02 “I am shure he is ok. 8)” 7:49:16 PM 3/17/02 “Was living in SF when the Santa Rosa quake hit. I was up on a stepladder painting my ceiling when I noticed that the ceiling, and not my roller, was doing the moving! Very interesting. Every day I drove through the city I would notice new cracks in walls and streets from the constant little tremors. Can't say that I miss it.” 7:53:30 PM 3/17/02 “Commuting back on 101 during the '89 earthquake. Everybody stopped their cars and got out because it felt like driving on a flat tire. It was strange to see the wave effect take place as you looked down the highway at thousands of cars. The first quake I felt made me sick to my stomach. My boss laughed at me because it was such a small tremor, but for this Midwestern boy it was quite an event. Hang in there, Phil!” 8:02:01 PM 3/17/02 “I rode the "wave' in LA in 94.Lots of tremors a week before and after the 6.8 hit” 8:04:58 PM 3/17/02 “We lived in the East Bay for the '89 Loma Prieta (World Series) quake. We were fortunate, many in San Franciso and Oakland were not.” 8:10:52 PM 3/17/02 “Pathman, do you remember the TV footage of that vehicle turning around on the Bay Bridge and driving off of the top deck? And wasn't it the Cypress overpass that collapsed?” 8:17:47 PM 3/17/02 “It was the Cypress overpass that collapsed. We moved from Alameda to Castro Valley earlier that year. When we lived in Alameda, I drove it nearly daily. I don't remember the car footage. I did have coworkers that lived on Treasure Island. They had to take a ferry to work for a long, long time. My wife worked in Peralta Hospital. I think it was nine stories, you could stand on the ground floor and see daylight straight up. It was condemned.” 9:09:14 PM 3/17/02 “We had a little one here in Alabama a few months ago. A 3.9 about 30 miles away. It shook the house hard enough that I though someone was running down the hallway. Quite the tremblor for us here in Huntsville! When they were testing the engines for the moon rocket here, people got used to the shaking. Then one day there was a little earthquake, and no one thought anything about it.” 9:39:47 PM 3/17/02 I'm still here!! “I rode thru every major earthquake in Southern California except the Whittier quake in 1988. The Sylmar quake in 1971 was the hardest I personally felt. My brother lived in Landers during the Landers quake in 1992 (7.5). The fault line went thru his yard and under his garage. It really shook them up and it was a miracle that none of his kids were hurt. One of these days I will scan the photos and post them...unbelievable. Some quakes are jolts and others are more like waves. In some cases you actually hear the quake before you feel it as the house begins to creak. The higher floors feel it more than the ground floor. What you don't know is when the shaking will subside. If it doesn't start subsiding after the first jolt, that's when you know it is a big one. During the Sylmar quake I looked out a broken window and down a large street. The shock waves were rippling the street with an amplitude of between 1 and 2 feet...bizarre. Mel lives in a pretty well defined earthquake zone. She lives just on the edge of the Long Valley Caldera (mouth of an ancient volcano). They have lots of earthquakes...but, fortunately for us, they are postponed during Llama hiking season.” 10:39:58 PM 3/17/02 Earthquake “Well we have had some here but not big. It was very strange... I had a feeling of light headed. There have actually been two I felt. The second I was at work and it made a sound like a truck hit the building and the signs on the wall were moving forward and backwards. I thought it was something outside until they told on the radio earthquake..... by the way I live in Tennessee. Barbara” 11:23:53 PM 3/17/02 “For those who call California earthquake prone -- remember the biggest earthquake in American recorded history was in Missouri.” 4:42:32 PM 3/19/02 “Gordon, you own stock in a pharmaceutical company specializing in ant-depressants, don't you?” 4:44:57 PM 3/19/02 “If I lived in Missouri I would be depressed. Who did I flame with that one?” 6:05:28 PM 3/19/02 “Well, then you would slit your wrists if you went to Kansas.” 6:29:34 PM 3/19/02 “'94 Northridge earthquake I shot 3 rolls of film after the Northridge Earthquake. When I get the scanner up I'll post a few photos. It was wierd seeing the damage.” 12:49:44 AM 3/20/02
