how to quit a jobView Messageshow to quit a job for a trip “I'm a total wimp when it comes to this, my lease is up in 10 days, i'm planning a thru hike, set for 3 weeks, and I still haven't told my boss. It would be nice to sneak in and pack my tools in the middle of the night, but i'm not that big of a wimp. He's kind of a jerk, and doesn't pay much, would you play on that, or say you really like him but just feel it is the best that you go live in the woods for a while. how many of you woulden't give 2 #&%!$s, tell him friday, and leave. Tell me some of your stories-” 1:21:41 AM 3/20/02 BT&DT more than I care to share with you! “I`ve had that come up several times over the years. I even took jobs, or didn`t take them on account of weather they`d let me have more time off than what was offered for vacation. Even then I`d end up threatening to quit, or would do it if pushed. It`s best to have a job lined up in the event things don`t work out as planed, but even that wasn`t enough to stop me if I took it in my head to go,.. I went! My big thing was hunting and hunting for a new job wasn`t much different, I needed time off to do that too,... Most of the time I got to keep my job and got some hefty pay raises and furnished a company ride out of the deal too,.. First off, ask for time off and see how that goes. If they can`t see your side in it, that puts the spin on them and it shouldn`t bother you as much to tell them you`ll have to just look for work else where. I even swung it so they`d pay for my time away!lol I told `em it beats enrolling me for another anger management program and me coming back and beating the hell outta someone half way through it! They saw my side in it most times and would much rather I take my guns off in the woods and play with `em, than bring `em to work with me!LMAO Good luck!” 3:02:14 AM 3/20/02 “Never burn your bridges. Give your boss sufficient notice and a nice letter of resignation (you know..."with regrets, you're leaving to persue other interests, blaa, blaa and how much you enjoyed your work, blaa blaa") so that he can replace you and thank him for employing you politely. Try and fish for a letter of recommendation...the less hard you make it on him, the easier it will be. Leaving an employer on good terms will make finding a future job easier too.” 4:21:20 AM 3/20/02 “I have been at the same job for 11 years! The last job I had before that I told them 1 week before hand that I was getting a new job. I think it is imporant to have good relations becuase they can be a future ref for the next job. 8|” 4:55:53 AM 3/20/02 “Gear Slut hit the nail on the head. Do what he said. Good Luck Also, ya lucky b@stard, I wish I was going to do a Thru-hike! Good luck with that too!” 5:52:48 AM 3/20/02 “Check out your company policy manual. In some cases, you may be able to take an unpaid leave of absence, and still keep your job. If you quit like you want to, you screw your track record buddy, listen to Gear Slut. (Did I just say that?)” 6:36:21 AM 3/20/02 “The letter of resignation should be brief and to the point. "I respectfully submit my resignation effective 04/03/02." signed Johnny Utah If they want to know more they will ask. Additionally you don't lead them to speculate on anything contained in the letter. Trying to justify leaving in a letter of resignation is a mistake.” 6:43:39 AM 3/20/02 “Buddha Bear and Gear Slut are both right on the money. Your first step should be to seek a leave of absence. We have had many employees take them at my company. If they are good employees we are very accomodating and welcome them back with open arms. Second, if you must quit don't burn bridges. I have recently been looking for new employment and have had to consider how I would tell my current employer. While some of the reasons are because I feel I have been slighted everything I have read says be respectful and don't burn bridges. You never know who you might run into in employment. It's a small world.” 7:32:58 AM 3/20/02 “I concur with GS and BB. You never know when someone is going to check up on your employment history.” 8:51:44 AM 3/20/02 If Your Boss Is Really An A$$... F*%# Him “I've come to the conclusion that there will be NO MORE 2-week notices for me when I quit employment from now on. That is, unless I truely need the boss' reference, because there's always those who you work with to give you good a character reference. Why do I feel this way you may ask??? It's because of the prevalence of employers NOT giving their employees the same 2-week courtesy as they demand from their employees. If the Co is going under...they don't tell you until the last dark hour....If you get laid off...they don't tell you until 4:30pm on Friday, etc. When did this double-standard come into effect (employer wanting 2-week notice, but fails to provide the same courtesy)??? From now on I'm giving my NEW employer a 2-week notice that I'll be there in 14 days, then quit the current job and take a 2-week vacation. F your boss!!!” 9:03:39 AM 3/20/02 “Ya what Buddur said! 8)” 11:46:07 AM 3/20/02 “Johnny if your job is what you can see doing as a career, and you want this business as a reference be nice. If it's just a job and the boss is a boogereater then follow Buddurs advice. In fact, have fun with it, push his buttons all day long.... have you seen "Office Space"?? Just don't embezzle any $$” 12:35:21 PM 3/20/02 “just point to people around the room and go, "F*ck you, f*ck you, f*ck you, you're cool, f*ck you!" hahaha!! :-) if you haven't seen *Half Baked*, you might not think that's funny...” 12:42:11 PM 3/20/02 “So Budder is not giving his current employer any notice, because some other companies have screwed their employees? Did I read that correctly?” 12:45:18 PM 3/20/02 IfISoundDisgruntled ItsBecauseISpeakFromExperience “You CANNOT deny the fact that employers WON'T give ANYBODY the same 2-week notification courtesy as they EXPECT from employees!!!” 3:11:35 PM 3/20/02 “Ummm....you're fired. See how easy that was?” 3:25:52 PM 3/20/02 “I don't know about the U.S...but in Canada the employer has to give the employee a 2 week notice, or pay him/her 2 weeks salary. From my experience, a lot of employees just tell the boss to "shove it" or just don't show up anymore. The law doesn't protect the employer.” 3:31:55 PM 3/20/02 “The first time I left a real job, I gave them two weeks notice. The next day, they asked me to leave. That became the normal modus operandi for that company, with the addition of being escorted to your car by security if you were considered "hostile". I've taken a more realistic approach to the problem of companies not being loyal to me. Basically, I'm just not loyal to them, past what benefits me. I got burned too many times by being "loyal" to a company or a department when it wasn't in my best interest. So now I act in my own best interest. If I feel like a company is screwing me over or treating me unfairly, instead of getting pissed about it, I do something about it. I leave. In the meantime, I try to be the best employee I can be, because that usually benefits me. The biggest thing to remember is that you're not working for them, really, you're working for yourself. If the place you're working for isn't doing right by you, fire them and hire another employer, on your own terms. Don't expect anything from your employer except what the HR manual says they must provide, a paycheck, benefits, and a reasonable working environment. If they fall down on the job, find another job and leave while you're still on good terms with the company. It works for me.” 4:48:09 PM 3/20/02 Giving Notice “Come on, people. Think about it. Not all employers are perfect. Not all employees are perfect. In fact, if there is any company or person that is perfect, I have not met them yet. That being said, seperation happens, use it to your advantage. If every employee assumes every company is out to screw them and acts accordingly, could you blame a company for not showing loyalty. If every company assumes every employee is out to screw them, why would an employee show loyalty. It's a nasty circle so choose not to be part of it. Be a professional and give notice. If your employer did in fact screw you, ask permission to leave right away in lieu of the circumstances. Nine times out of ten they will give it to you. Also, ask for a good reference. As an employer, I get many calls on references and I also make those calls. I won't hire anybody with a bad reference, so don't kid yourself about the importance of a good reference. If you are truely out for yourself, the best thing you can do is leave on a good note. Think about it, what goes around, comes around. If you want a quality long term employer, be a class act in your dealings and you have a better chance of landing what you want. Take the worthless emotion out of the issue. Didn't your mother say to treat people the way you want to be treated? It is that easy” 5:12:28 PM 3/20/02 “Budder has a good point. Where I work its dog eat dog and the way my boss is you got 3 chances and then thats it. Your fired! 8|” 5:27:04 PM 3/20/02 “Thanks so much for the diffrent takes on quitting. At diffrent times I agree with both sides, and if a refrence doesn't matter, them who cares how you quit, you just have to live with how you've acted, that im mind i'll be nice and heed one guys advice, keep it short and simple. I'm shooting for tommorrow, friday at the latest, thanks again” 10:04:33 PM 3/20/02 Keep Us Informed On Yer Departure, Mr.Utah “I wrote a sweet 2-week notice letter to my first employer after college. It gave a 2-week notice of leaving, thanked them for the experience I attained, and asked that they "be happy for me while I start another chapter in my life". How can you go wrong with a statement like that?” 9:26:19 PM 3/21/02 “If my boss saw that well he would just flip! 8) LMFAO!!!!!” 9:29:46 PM 3/21/02 “Bring a gun into work. It's an easy way to lose your job.” 12:46:31 AM 3/22/02 “i don't have a gun, according to my boss, i'm an east coast anti-gun liberal. alaskans are quite a bunch. i can't believe i didn't tell him today. monday for sure.” 12:37:40 AM 3/23/02 “Get laid off. That way you can collect unemployment” 7:41:21 PM 3/24/02 “Speaking of which. I have had 0 luck getting laid off. Anybody got any ideas??” 7:38:58 PM 3/26/02 “Well you could walk right up to your boss and pinch his or hers ear real hard and then a good kick in the knee would do! 8)” 7:41:08 PM 3/26/02 “Have someone close call you in dead. I did that once when I was a teenager, they were pretty suprised when I came in to collect my last check.” 7:48:56 PM 3/26/02 “If you have web access at work, Biz, you could try posting to Trail Talk constantly. That might do it.” 7:55:35 PM 3/26/02 “Ah.. Good Good. Making notes Biz is Dead, send money” 8:46:47 PM 3/26/02 “Just slip out the Back Jack- Make a new plan Stan, No need to be coy Roy, Just set yourself free.” 9:17:20 PM 3/26/02 “Holy sh*t! I just quit my job!” 6:20:47 PM 3/24/03 “CONGRATS!! I think? What are the details? Hope everything is cool.” 6:32:15 PM 3/24/03 “Yes! Thanks! All is good. This is all just part of the master S. America plan! I am nervous in that I will be unemployed with the economy so depressed but I am confident this is what I want to do and that it will all work out! I'll still be working here for the next two+ mos. until we leave in June. All quite exciting, really!” 6:58:12 PM 3/24/03 “Cool man, congrats! That's great you and the woman are going to S. America, you guys are going to have a blast.” 7:01:06 PM 3/24/03 “I guess congrats are in order? I could not afford to quit my job right now, man, no more gear! I need more biz coming my way anyway right now. The economy really is bad right now.” 7:23:55 PM 3/24/03 “Wow! You're really going to do it. Good for you, it should be the trip of a lifetime.” 7:40:19 PM 3/24/03 “Well, how'd you do it??” 8:33:14 PM 3/24/03 “I went in, closed the door, and broke it to the bosses (2). They understood. I still have 2 mos before I leave for good.” 10:42:34 PM 3/24/03 “Congrats, rosey, sounds like your bosses are good folks for understanding. My wife is in Peru on business right now and loving it....” 10:50:28 PM 3/24/03 roseymonster “Congrats! Now, can I have your job? ;-}” 10:59:08 PM 3/24/03 “While I don't work I think showing up #&%!$faced drunk is the way to go. Being escorted out with your pants around you ankles screaming curses at your bosses is a nice touch too.” 8:10:44 AM 3/25/03 “roseymonster, you bastard! just kidding, congrats. i'm sooo jealous! :-)” 8:27:13 AM 3/25/03 “thanks, guys! It felt good to come clean. Really, Marty? She digs it a lot? Man, I can't wait...” 12:03:17 PM 3/25/03 “Lucky dog! Congratulations on fulfilling your dream, not so many people do.” 12:08:11 PM 3/25/03 “any new ideas?” 12:20:45 PM 7/21/04 “Have you completed step 1?” 12:21:17 PM 7/21/04 “I always have given my notice on a Monday. That way the boss cannot think about ways to make you stay over the weekend.” 12:22:36 PM 7/21/04 “does this mean the interviews went well the other day??????” 12:36:39 PM 7/21/04
