Sowwy To Heer Dat, Ms.Sarabelle
My parents had a cat that got caught in a trap and was in it for almost 3 days till she found it. The leg was dead from the trapmouth to the paw, and you could see bones in the paw where the cat tried to bite free itself. The doc HAD to amputate the leg. And to make a long story short... the cat recovered remarkable and lived a long healthy life with just the 3 legs. It could do everything other cats could do, and could run just as fast as if he has 4 legs. The only thing it couldn't do was climb trees.

That's some words of encouragement!

When I was a kid I had a 3 legged cat. She could climb trees. She was real young when she lost the leg though so I guess she adjusted well.

I'm awfully sorry to hear about you're leg Sarabelle. Good luck and I hope you get better soon.

Sarabelle, I'm sorry you have to have your leg cut off. Don't worry too much. I think you'll be fine and get back to walkin in the woods real soon.

Tight Wad Bob and I just adopted an Australian Shepherd, named Sam who has only three legs. I think he's going to make a grand walkin in the woods dog once he's a little more comfy with us.

Sam worked on a farm and was kicked by a horse. The vet couldn't get the bone to set so... Then his humans decided he was too much trouble and dumped him in a shelter. Stoopid humans.

Perhaps you and Sam can go six legged walkin in the woods together sometime soon.

Get better soon!

She is not losing the leg
but she does need knee surgery. Her vet refered me to a surgeon, and estimates the cost to be from $800 - 1000... ouch!

UGA Veterinary school is doing some sorta research on the ailment, and Belle's vet says she'll look into that for me. She says I could prolly have the surgery done for half price.

i've got something called a care card. i don't know if you've ever heard of it but it's basically a credit card that you can use only at the vet. it has like no interest for 6 months and then after that its real low. and i don't think they do that thing wheere you have to pay interest from the beginning if you don't pay it in the 6 montsh. i know all vets don't take it but it wasnt hard at all for me to find one that does.

It's really amazing the lengths we're willing to go through for those darned little emotional attachments, isn't it? Scooby had to have surgery when she was 8 weeks old. Without it she would have died a slow, agonizing death. The only other option was euthanasia. It wasn't as expensive as what you're contemplating but it's still tough to admit I spent that much on a dog. I know others who have spent more without regret. I know I don't regret it. They really are worth it.

Yeah - her pack
I have never had her carry more than 1/4 her weight, tho.

I'll keep a closer eye on her the next time she packs. I took it off her and strapped it atop my pack at last months ECT FL hike - it fit like a glove... and the added weight was negligable.

I suspect the injury was a result of her jumping to snatch a gimmedat from my upstretched hand.

YEOUCH! $1000 eh? Birch and I dropped $1300 on Birchdog when she got hit be a truck. It was money well spent. In the grand scheme of things $1000 isn't that much. If you don't believe me send me $1000 and I'll show you how fast I can spend it. =) Feel better soon Sarabelle. You too Gojo.

My sister-in-law spent $1000 (per eye) for cataract surgery for her dog. I thought it was outrageous until I had animals of my own. I pray I never have to make a decision like that, money or my pet's life.

By the way, the dog had juvenile cataracts, he was 3 years old at the time. Poor dog couldn't see a thing, couldn't chase a ball, couldn't go up and down stairs. It was so sad to see him like that!

IT IS NOT RIGHT TO SAY SARABELLE'S LOSING A LEG AND THEN AN HOUR AND A HALF COME BACK AND SAY SHE'S NOT LOSING IT. THAT IS JUST WRONG. THOUGH I'VE NEVER HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING HER, YOU HAVE SO CLEVERLY SPUN HER TALES (TAIL) THAT SHE HAS SEEMED TO BE THE MOST DECENT HIKER ON THIS BOARD. I'M GLAD SHE'S NOT GETTING HER LEG AMPUTATED. I WISH, THOUGH THAT I HADN'T BEEN BUMMED OUT FOR THE MIDDLE OF MY DAY.

We’ve got an Old English Sheep dog with hip dysplasia. I took her to the vet soon after we got her to have her neutered and as long as she was knocked out, they x-rayed her hips because that breed is prone to dysplasia. When I found out, I went back to the place I bought her and the owner signed an agreement to pay for her hip replacement surgery if she ever needs it, up to our purchase price. I thought that was pretty decent of him until he went out of business six months later and re-opened under a new name. I’m sure I’d pay for the surgery if she ever needs it as long as she is in good health otherwise. I paid for a week’s stay in the hospital and surgery for another dog I owned.

We’ve made sure she gets plenty of exercise – the vet said as long as the muscle remained strong, she may never develop symptoms. She did develop a limp in the front leg which the vet said might be related, but she didn’t x-ray. I’ve been giving her glucosamine for 6+- months and the limp is nearly gone.

Good luck to yer doggy, gojo.

I was pretty worried at first too. I was more relieved when the truth came out later. SHEWWWWW!
Sarabelle is a fine dog and I think her spirits will be fine as long as she can still walk in the woods and sleep in the woods. She just gotta make her Daddy carry her packpack. Gojo would be carrying a packpackpack.

Violin, this may sound strange but here goes.

In Field and Stream a gun-dog nut had a lab that had dysplaysia. He gave it vitamin C until it had loose stool then toned down the dosage till the stool was regular. He took his dog for xrays every three months and this problem virtually went away.

I know 'belle aint that old but I don't understand why some people will do everything no matter the cost to keep a lame dog around especially them old ones that are past their prime.

That was kinda lame saying one thing when in all actuality it is something completely different. Big dogs like yours will be prone to ailments like the one you have describe. I would suggest keeping her weight in check and avoid having her cart your/her stuff around and curtail those jumping gimme dat games. Since most dogs don't communicate as well as yours does, I would suggest giving her Ascriptin pain reliever just in case she has some discomfort. It's a aspirin buffered with Maalox so its easy on the stomach also look into giving her some Glucosamine like others might have already suggested. A lot of ink has been spilled about the GLU stuff. I would look into giving her the stuff made for humans more than the stuff made for pets. There is likely to be a difference in the quality of the product that maybe reflected in the cost too. You get what you pay for.

Glucosamine does do a lot of good and when you combine it with MSM an Chondroitin you'll most likely get results that would postpone if not do away with the necessity of surgery I've learned the hard way Vet's will go the route that puts the most money in their pockets an a lot of them scream Surgery at the drop of a hat it certainly would'nt hurt to try anyway I have horses with soft tissue, ligament an even tendon problems who are still racing thanks to the above remedies

Sorry for the delayed disclaimer, y'all
I had a black lab for 14 years. He was stocky, and was virtually unphased by rough-and-tumble play. That's appearantly not the case with Belle. I'll be much more sensitive to her feminimity in the future...
promise!

The doc says the surgery will make her good as new. I'll try the aforementioned suggestions for a while, but I feel compelled to get her fixed up ASAP.
