Flooding SucksView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 26 of 26 messages posted.
Well, at least MY house isn't flooded “This morning they declared my county in a state of emergency and evacuated the town (it's in a valley) and all other low-lying areas. I'm so glad my house is on high ground. I'm also glad that the water has receded enough so they could re-open the highway. We have plenty of groceries and would have been quite fine for several days even if they hadn't. It's just nice to know we can get out now if we need to. And of course, that trapped feeling isn't much fun. But at least my house isn't flooded. Others aren't so fortunate and many will be spending the next few nights in an emergency shelter. At least I'll get to sleep in my own bed. I'll be so glad when things are back to normal here!” 12:08:05 PM 3/20/02 “I hear ya skully.. our part of the country got hammered..” 12:19:19 PM 3/20/02 “I hope things get better soon!” 12:21:22 PM 3/20/02 “Yeah, some friends got flooded out bad and they didn't have insurance. I have talked to a lot of people today that didn't have insurance. I don't know what they're going to do.” 12:22:30 PM 3/20/02 “yikes, i had no idea it was that bad! i'm glad your house is ok, skully...” 1:05:43 PM 3/20/02 “I hope everything works out! Be safe! 8|” 5:23:29 PM 3/20/02 “Wow, Skully, I'm glad that you can stay in your house. Flooding is weird, like it sometimes happens once in a hundred years, and then people lose everything. No one insures for flooding that "never" happens. We had that situation in my area two years ago. Once people got disaster relief money, they couldn't hire anyone to rebuild their houses because all the trade workers were swamped with repair work.” 7:48:30 PM 3/20/02 “i didnt even know there was a problem down there! good luck to you and your friends!” 7:50:46 PM 3/20/02 “Thanks everybody. The worst of it was this morning and the water has receded considerably throughout the day. After the water went down some and I could get around safely I walked around town and took some pics. I'll upload them to my webshots page tomorrow.” 9:16:33 PM 3/20/02 Flood photo journal “I've got some pics and descriptions posted. You can see them here. I had to wait until the water went down and the rain let up to take them so they don't really reflect the worst of it.” 7:24:44 AM 3/21/02 “Thanks for the photos. I am glad you are high and dry. I went through a flood once, and it is not fun. The water just kept rising slowly and there was nothing you could do about it. Floods tend to last a little longer on the plains.” 7:42:39 AM 3/21/02 “Yeah, I did a little driving tour this morning and the water level is almost back to normal. It rose extremely quickly and it has been dropping pretty fast. They expect to lift the state of emergency by this afternoon and my son had school today. Man, downtown is a mess though!” 8:28:12 AM 3/21/02 “3 weeks later.....they opened a FEMA office in town today. Quick reaction time. I'm impressed.” 8:29:31 AM 4/12/02 “Our Disaster Recovery division is swamped. (No pun intended). Most of the crews we had working on the Pentagon have been re-deployed for Flood damage projects.” 8:40:09 AM 4/12/02 “Yeah, it was pretty widespread this time.” 8:43:40 AM 4/12/02 “ARGH! Stupid freaking ge piece of #&%!$ washing machine! The water shutoff censor just failed! The machine is upstairs! Now I've got a nice wet carpet, a little water in the downstairs bathroom (it came out the ceiling vent) and a little water that ran across a stair tread. It could have been a lot worse, but this is very aggravating! Also the repairman I trust can't make it out here for a couple of hours. Grr!” 11:30:48 AM 7/24/03 “I know that routine. At my house, the water 'decided' to take out part of the ceiling then come down the dining room wall --- behind the latex paint. fun, fun, FUN!” 11:58:21 AM 7/24/03 “It hasn't bothered any painted surfaces yet. Just my nerves.I disaasembled the ceiling vent fan for the downstairs bathroom, and I've removed the doors for the laundry closet and drained all the water from the washing machine. I've gotten most of the water out of the carpet, and have fans going. I've done as much as I can for now.” 12:03:00 PM 7/24/03 “Do you have a dehumidifier? The things work great. Will suck the moisture out of anything.” 12:08:31 PM 7/24/03 “May the Force be with you.” 12:11:01 PM 7/24/03 “Nope, no dehumidfier, although the a.c.'s are running, and they dry stuff out pretty darn well.” 12:12:25 PM 7/24/03 “I bought on reciently after rains brought water into my basement. I was shock how my moisture the thing could suck out of the air.” 12:16:32 PM 7/24/03 “Oy, Vey. I've pulled up most of the carpet on the upstairs landing, and I've got that draped over the bannister. I've got the padding pulled up too, and it's draped all over the bathroom. I have my two floor fans, plus one I borrowed from my parents going. I did end up putting down a bleach solution on the bare wood floor, and dribbled some of that down any cracks water may have gone down to prevent any mold and mildew. Whew. In some ways I hope this is all dry by sunday when HPM gets home. I'll have pics of it. If not, then he can share in the chaos.” 8:52:04 PM 7/24/03 “I was about to throw a load of laundry in just before I left for work this morning, but then remembered your luck, treebait. Hope you dry out soon!” 7:38:40 AM 7/25/03 “The carpet and padding are still damp. I'm going to look at dehumidifiers.” 8:19:44 AM 7/25/03 “ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia (AP) -- Water began seeping into a mine in southern Russia, trapping 49 miners about 800 meters (2624.67 feet) underground Thursday, emergency officials said. The miners were working in the Zapadnaya mine in Shakty in the Rostov-on-Don region, about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) south of Moscow, when the accident happened, said Andrei Somishchenko, duty officer at the Emergency Situations Ministry's southern office.” 11:12:42 PM 10/23/03
