Canoe trip in May

I took ole JGiles on a fast trip through some of LIttle Rock's best gear shops last night. I think he enjoyed himself because he left town with a brand new Golite backpack. I'm suffering from "backpack envy". It sure was nice but I'll let him tell you guys about it!

One week to go and we will be floating! I'm going to kick back and let Jgiles do the navigating. Don't tell though...

“made it to Nashville, but the canoe is a resident of Memphis...I went into Outdoors,Ind...and they gave me a sweet deal on a "Mad River" canoe...went out on it today with my mother and Khatru...Great mothers day!!! had a picinic on the water in the middle of the lake...forgot the camera, so no kodak moments. PHOOEY!!! The dog was funny...kept biting at the water and wanted to be up front leading the pack.

I can not wait till we are on the river...Hyped is not the word...I would use "STOKED!!!" The only concern now is all the frigin T-storms ripping through the area.

“yes, you need to make arrangements...Call Kenny!! 417-778-6497. The rains are still coming and t-storms are scheduled for Friday and some rain on Sat. The river will be running fast, talk with him on times and speeds, he will know the drill. As far as maps go, do you mean driving directions, I will post them up this evening, river maps, you already have them.”

“If the river is up too much you won't get me on it. I've canoed a flooded river before and said that I wouldn't do it again.”

“It's one thing to float a river that is up. It's another to do it with a boat full of gear. I think I read something about some class II on this river. If the rain pushes it to class III I won't try it.”

“ This is the gauging station report. The river was extremely high on the 8th and 9th, then fell off some, but looks like it is climbing again this morning.”

“A couple of years ago I would have said lets go no matter what. Now I am with the others if it is up I’m out. It only takes one good time on a pissed-off river to decide that ant the place to be.”

I don't like the idea of dumping a lot of camping gear. Maybe we should consider alternative dates...”

ADDITIONAL RAINFALL OVER IN NORTHEAST ARKANSAS AND SOUTHERN MISSOURI WILL FURTHER AGGREVATE THE FLOOD SITUATION. EXPECT RISES ON THE TRIBUTARIES OF THE BLACK RIVER SUCH AS THE SPRING...ELEVEN POINT...AND CURRENT RIVERS TO HELP HOLD THE STAGE AT POCAHONTAS AND BLACK ROCK WELL ABOVE FLOOD STAGE FOR A LONGER PERIOD OF TIME.

FOR THE BLACK RIVER AT POCAHONTAS THE STAGE WAS 21.8 FEET AT 8 AM. FLOOD STAGE IS 17 FEET. THE RIVER IS FORECASTED TO CREST NEAR 22.0 FEET OVERNIGHT TONIGHT OR EARLY TOMORROW. AT STAGES NEAR 22.0 FEET EXPECT BACKWATER FLOODING UP FOURCHE RIVER...PETTIT CREEK...AND MILL CREEK. ADDITIONAL ACREAGE WILL BE FLOODED AROUND THE AIRPORT AND SOUTHEAST OF POCAHONTAS. MANY ACRES OF CROPLAND ARE FLOODED AND MORE WILL FLOOD AT THE FORECASTED STAGE. HWY 37 AT ELGIN COULD BE IMPASSABLE LATER THIS WEEK.
