People talk about washing their hands thoroughly on the trail. Just how do they do this? I don't like to snack as I go, on the trail, because I've usually grabbed tree trucks to pull myself up steep grades or across muddy areas. Or I got water on my hands while filtering from a creek. Then I wonder what kind of germs are on my hands. I take a hand sanitizer with me, but I don't know how much to trust that. I have a little camp soap in a bottle, but it uses a lot of water to rinse off.

isn't it funny how the definition of "clean" changes once you get on the trail? i dunk a spoon in some snow and wipe it off, and then it's clean, hahaha! i'd never do that at home...

Hygiene for me means avoiding fecal-oral germ transmission, cooking and food preservation. I'm not worried about trail dust.

Hand sanitizers are not bad. Hospitals are using versions in areas requiring very frequent handwashing. Certainly better than nothing.

I'm kind of a pig on the trail, I prolly eat as much dust off my hands as I do gorp...at camp after I've got water taken care of is when I really try to get cleaned up again

I defecate and urinate in the stream. That way the germs are carried downstream away from my camp.

I got giardia once.I drank some bad water and when i woke up i went over to the visitor center and i shat for a good 90 mins. I then had to go and get pills.Thank god this didnt happen in the backcountry or i would have been one filthy, smelly mess.

There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.

The water is not the problem. Bears are not the problem, It's you you filthy human and you alone. Don't go into the outdoors if your afraid of bears. And if you want to carry a filter to clean the CLEAN water than by all means.. have fun. Bunch of yuppies. Gotta defend all that over done and over priced gear you bought. HA HA I think your all so funny, can't except a different way of thinking. Don't want to admit to giving into advertizers hype do ya....well I guess I wouldn't want to either. You can keep your pride and CARRY IT ON YOUR BACK....HA HA HA LMAO

Cammomile and Valerian Root tea, Thinair. You can find the plants along the trail so it won't add to your pack weight, and it has a calming effect.
