“People talk about washing their hands thoroughly on the trail. Just how do they do this? I don't like to snack as I go, on the trail, because I've usually grabbed tree trucks to pull myself up steep grades or across muddy areas. Or I got water on my hands while filtering from a creek. Then I wonder what kind of germs are on my hands. I take a hand sanitizer with me, but I don't know how much to trust that. I have a little camp soap in a bottle, but it uses a lot of water to rinse off.”

Hand sanitizers are not bad. Hospitals are using versions in areas requiring very frequent handwashing. Certainly better than nothing.”
