Death to hockey
CNN) -- Family and friends of 13-year-old Brittanie Cecil are still coming to grips with her death earlier this week, two days after being struck in the head by a hockey puck at an NHL game. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's medical correspondent, talked with anchor Bill Hemmer Tuesday about what killed Brittanie and what, if anything, could have prevented her death.

GUPTA: The puck actually hit the left side of Brittanie's skull. As we saw, she was apparently doing pretty well at first, able to actually get up and walk away. What likely happened was that after the puck hit, her brain bounced back in her skull, and then bounced forward again.

That would kind of cause a contusion right where the puck hit, but also another one in the back of the brain. Over time, that sort of injury can cause swelling of the brain.

Sometimes that can take up to several hours, or even a couple of days as the case may have been. Other things can happen as well. A blood clot might have formed right at the place where the puck hit the skull, and that blood clot would cause compression on the brain. Again, that might take a couple of days. Both are sort of unusual circumstances, an unusual situation, but those are likely explanations.

The NHL should pay. Hockey is dangerous. So is baseball.

it's the price of living....stuff happens...i just had a friend die in a car wreck..it just happened..no wrecklessness...if you fall off a boulder in the woods..should the FS have to pay?
You take risk by experiencing different things everyday...it's called life

It's like in the movie, "The Time Machine", when the hero's fiancee dies..he goes back in time to save her...she still dies in another way. Like Tango313 said...when it's your time...it's your time.

Ditto Tango. No one dies before their time. I'm sure TheButtpacker would love to see the government take over sports and set up some nice safe guidelines for them to keep us safe with.

#1 rule of hockey...keep your eye on the puck.

As a southerner...to make hockey alot more fun..i think they should paint the puck white!

The team had a ceremony at their game last night and will wear the girl's initials on their helmets for the rest of the season. Too bad.

On average, four spectators get hit at every game. On will require stiches.

Was on the news this morning. I think it was done by Georgetown University.

Too bad though. That's why I always sit low and behind the glass.

The democrats just introduced a bill in Congress to mandate a 21 day waiting period and background checks before purchasing hockey equipment.

The NRA immediately issued a press release stating "Pucks don't kill people."

No one dies before their time.
- nigal & Tango

Thank you for that piece of wisdom, almighty tango and republican nigal.

So by your thinking... all the dead of 9/11 were not tragically killed. It was all their time to die. The hijackers then actually never "killed" them. GOD did.

Then why do @ssinine gun owners like nigal insist on owning guns. I mean, if it's your time to die, then it's your time. Just take it like a man and forget the gun.

If babies are aborted...it's their time.

You can't expect to keep your eye on a 100 mph little object that is deflected into your face by the hands of the person sitting in front of you. It's like saying people who get shot by guns are at fault for not ducking.

George-

I think you are taking things way out of context. I believe what Nigal was saying is that when it is your time it is your time, no matter how the death occurs.

No one said this death or any other wasn't tragic. God know where you got that.

People own guns for protection, hunting, and sport. But whatever reason it is, it is their right. Someone could just as easily be killed with a blunt object as they could a gun, are we going to outlaw baseball bats & tire irons?

The last comment you made is so stupid I wouldn't know where to start ripping it apart.

This was a discussion and everyone has a right to their opinion, what it doesn't need is people attacking others.

Like mom said, "if you can't say something nice..."

people die, it's sad. I wish people would stop trying to legislate the crap out of everything. Now don't twist what I'm saying as guns, guns, guns, I want guns. When people leave a gun lying around and a kid gets killed I think the gun owner should go to jail for murder2. I've sat directly behind the Angels dugout many times, and everytime I know there is a chance (small) that a foul tip is gonna come screaming at me... it's a risk I take, same risk I take every morning in the shower soaping up my feet. I don't mean to scare anyone unnecessarily but dying at any given moment is always a remote possibility

It is truly a tragedy when anyone dies that young. And it would have been just as much of a tragedy had she died in a car accident on the way to the game. Nobody handed me a guarantee when my son was born that he would live to adulthood. There is no guarantee that I will live through the day. The Universe just doesn't work that way, I wish it did. I would like to see that plexiglass about ten feet, or more, taller though.

Other than make the glass taller I think netting is the answer that will prevent this from happening again!! They have it behind the 'plate' and behind the 'goal post' and running along side many driving ranges. Why not hang it from the rafters above the rink. It really can't inhibit your view in more if you're already in the nose bleeds.

My experience with nets at baseball games is if you're behind them, the further back, the better. It's only when I'm close to the net, or trying to look through the plane of the net, that I have problems seeing through it.
Curving the net properly should cut down on that problem. Having plexi up to a certain height then having netting cuts out the problem of your eyes focusing on the net instead of the game.

I like the "When it's your time..." theory.

If it were true, you could hold a gun to your own head and squeeze the trigger. If it were not your anointed time then the gun would misfire. If it were your time then the method of your demise is irrelevant.

Any volunteers to test the theory?

It was a freak accident. Yes it could have been prevented with nets, but it's still so rare of an incident that you can't really blame the Stadium or the great game of Hockey. The dice were rolled and she got snake eyes.
