The lawn

“Every year it is the same thing. I promise to get an early start on the lawn, pre-emerge, post emerge, weed killer, fertilizer....

I never get the entire program together for that golf course look. What advice or short cuts do you folks have for a lush green lawn that does not need a lot of mowing?”

“just one word: Astroturf”

“We had an intersection with a small median where they installed astroturf.

It became the most unsightly ash tray you can imagine. Cigarette butts clung to it like magnets along with any bits of trash small enough to get wedged between the blades of 'grass'. I hate to vacuum as much as I hate to mow.”

“I suggest you pour concrete stained with the desired tint.

In the winter you can just apply some brilliant white confetti for the alpine look.”

When we moved back here I hoped we would find a xeriscaped yard. No such luck.

Last year the lawn got fungus. I hoped. Then it got grubs and I hoped again. I looks ugly as hell at times, but it won't die.”

Then get a couple of big truckloads of pea gravel. Make a stone garden. A couple of plastic flamingoes.

I hate grass. I'm allergic to the stuff, it makes me break out. Fortunately for me, my wife does the mowing.”

“My teens do the mowing. I just pay for the water, gas, fertilizer, more water, sprinkler repair, more water....”

The mowing is not my worst problem, it is those tough weeds that grow 5 times faster that the bermuda. I have tried various weed controls, but either they are ineffective, too expensive, or too hard to apply.”

if ya desire to have a nice manicured lawn...ya gotta suffer for it...this is a battle i have sent the white flag up on a long time ago....xeriscape is the way to peace...:)

“Centipede grass...that's all ya need..

Or do what us country folk do...Burn your yard off at the end/middle of winter...and by spring it'll be the greenest, lushest lawn in the neighborhood”

I have an acre of grass. I don't really want or need a xeriscape approach.

I can get the greenskeeper from the local golf course to come by and solve my problem, but it will cost me some cash I don't really want to go with the major chemical assault.”

“I don't know what Bermuda grass is.

When we had 1/2 acre, we used fertilizer from Gardens Alive, mail order. The grass was so thick and deep rooted that we almost never had to water it, and the weeds didn't have a chance. When we moved to a house with an acre, we gave it up. Too expensive for such a large yard. Maybe some day we can go back to using it. Now we spot treat the lawn using weed killers and fertilizer on problem areas, and lime the whole yard frequently.”

“You have to love it! Folks with the greenest most weed free lawns devote much of their spare time to gardening... or they throw piles of money at some gardener like me :) . Flowers, vegetables and lawns all require time and effort to get quality results.

My own lawns are not perfect ...but close enough for me.”
