Sierra SnowshoeView Messages“Anyone else of the Sierra spirit for this up-and-coming weekend, there are jpeg maps I can send to you. Say aye, and I'll ship 'em to you with meeting time, place, and radio settings. I plan on picking up the permit in Bishop on the way up. If you're up for going along, you can do the same by self issue (even after hours). Head to the White Mountain RS, or I can take care of it. Just think, you could be part of the DigitalDrifter, Snow Nymph, Backcountry experience and no one gets hurt (that's not allowed). ...I wonder if adults aren't supposed to have this much fun. 8)” 10:30:38 PM 4/01/02 “Looking forward to the weekend! Just got your e-mail. I'll see if I have the topos. As soon as I finish weekend addition to the website, I'll start packing!” 10:44:01 PM 4/01/02 SNOW NYMPH, WANDERER, et al “I know of a pair of Atlas 1025's with the orange tubing, just some scratches as they're only used a few times. Price is $150, izat purdy good, should I Jew 'em down some more, offer less with cash?? Gimme some guideance y'all! If thissun slips, what should I expect to pay for some used 1025's?? Or even some MSR Denali Ascents (w/o extensions)? Wanderer, the latter ?? is for you bro!” 2:30:31 AM 4/02/02 Sounds like what SD just got “http://www.domsoutdoor.com/cgi-bin/cgiitmls?m=ThisP&p=9.052125&l=2 They go for $238. They'll get scratched up eventually.” 2:50:02 AM 4/02/02 “ty SN, hugs” 3:10:22 AM 4/02/02 Shoes is shoes.. “Hey NA, we keep missin' ea other. Here's my $.02, damn overpriced though it is... I have a pair of the MSR's, you saw 'em, great shoes. I also have a pair of Tubbs 25's, pretty similar to Atlas 1025's, also pretty good shoes. Bottom Line IMHO... you can't go wrong with any of the major snowshoe vendors... Atlas, MSR, Tubbs, and a couple others. Some preferences are relatively "MINOR", although I realize some will disagree w the "minor" part. All are good products. A lot of the preferences are simply what you get used to, not necessarily what is "better". And the reason you were missing your hook-up with Tahoe is because HE was WITH ME! YEEEHAWWWWW. We wuz backpackin' on Slide Mountain this weekend in the Carson range, we checked out some of his new stuff, made sure my old stuff still worked, & generally just welcomed the hikin' season in w a short trek. When you do catch up with him ask about the BEAR TRACKS! I've been out there a pretty long time & NEVER saw tracks like those! I have pics on the way for the non-believers.” 3:29:02 AM 4/02/02 “Guess that means I should bring my bear canister this weekend??? I was hoping the Bearikade Weekender would show up before Friday.” 9:07:37 AM 4/02/02 “Hey SN, after I saw those tracks I wanted a can big enough for ME to crawl into. I thought those big furry things were still sleeping, guess not. These were in some relatively deep snow, up about 6400'. Be careful out there!” 10:26:03 AM 4/02/02 “Tekkapo: Had been up to Loch Leven a few times before. It's a pretty straight forward hike but I still had fun doing snow navigation. Yes and we saw some BIIIIG bear tracks as well. Didn't see the hungry sucka tho. Whew.” 10:37:44 AM 4/02/02 Yikes a bear!! “Wanderer, I thought that I was the only one of us feeling that tense in the gut kind of feeling. Damn happy the thing didn't come to visit us in the night.” 2:06:05 PM 4/02/02 “LOL yah wanderer I was tolt of'em by tahoe! These tracks here are black bear ain't they?? As in "just be careful wit your food and you'll be just fine" bears?? Right! No doubt a good chunk of my 2 weeker will be solo up in that bear-tracked white stuff. Mebbe I better bring an extry pair of panties in case one scares me eh? Thanks for your help everyone, reckon' I better git busy ownin' a pair of snowshoes!” 2:06:54 AM 4/03/02 “nekkid, I just looked at the spooner lake web cam and guess what? They are closed for the season because the snow is starting to go away. Keep in mind that this is only at 7100' elevation, and it is on the east side (less snow), but what a great sign of spring hiking conditions.” 8:48:18 AM 4/03/02 “NA, Click on the REI ad to the right, and look at snow sports, then snowshoes. There's a pair of atlass 833s that are going for $138. Looks like it might fit you. I don't know the difference between these and the 10 series.” 9:34:59 AM 4/03/02 We're just funnin' “NA they're all black bears, and the reality is they'll run from you faster than you can from then. Except for those at popular spots like Yosemite, they're very leary of people, you can go years without even seeing one in the wilderness.” 10:39:22 AM 4/03/02 “Good wanderer, then they're just like the blackbears back East, no prollem! SN I'll check'em out, but with Atlas's webpage descriptions of their snowshoes, I liked the 10 and 12 series best. And seeing as how your beau is 'bout my size and used the 10's on a big trip w/ satisfaction, 'at makes 'em good enough fer me too. I'll check out the description of the 833's, lotta them on Ebay. I just lost those new model 1025's this morning only by a cupla bux. But I've still got a little time. Great news Tahoe, hopefully Spooner is close to the TRT. I'm guessing regardless what the conditions are upair in May, I better have a pair of s-shoes for just in case. Might need'em for the higher elevation passes. I hate the thought of lugging 4 extry lbs for nothing tho. Thanx for your very helpful e's tahoe, I'm gonna pick up that map, and mebbe that book too, at the Sac REI. I'll check out 'em 833's when I'm there as well SN, thanx! Oh yeah, I'm glad that they completed that northern section of the TRT. Heck, methanx "Jack the dull boy housewife" is startin ta git a wee bit fired up!” 2:03:42 PM 4/03/02 “SN looks like the 8 series is a little bit lighter weight than the 10/12's. I'll check out the finite diff's of each of these, but for now I'm inclined to pickup a used pair of the 1025's(based on your and SD's happiness) and wanderers MRS Denali Ascents w/ them batwing thangs.” 2:22:24 PM 4/03/02 Northern Lites Snowshoes “NA: Check out Northern Lites Snowshoes. I bought their Backcountry model a few months ago and really like them for the weight savings. Good luck!” 2:40:34 PM 4/03/02 “Hey SnowAphid, do you know anyone using the Atlas 8-series?? I could use the 825's and save more'na lb off the weight. However, the 10's have a spring load/step to'em, and have the 2 rows of teeth that'll keep lateral stability, like wanderer's Denali pair. The 8-series boasts trail use, and 10's boast go anywhere kinda deal (which I must truthfully and painfully admit will be a very lawng time aways, tear). However, if'n I'm making/breaking trail in the snow, might'nt I want the go-anywhere ones in case I hafta guesstimate the trail with my topos???? How's my thankin Snow? Reckon' I ought to stick wif the 1025s? Yeah, yeah I know .... petty...” 2:44:49 PM 4/03/02 “Thanx Hikin Mike!! I checked 'em out and like what I see. Mebbe I can come up with some used ones, those bright orange Backcountry Rescue ones are nifty.” 3:33:12 PM 4/03/02 “NA: I liked the Rescue model too, but didn't want to spend more money for bright orange. The catalog that I got with the shoes lists both Rescue and Backcountry models for about $230. Not sure which price is right. Doesn't make sense to charge $30 more just for a different color.” 3:49:47 PM 4/03/02 catch you on another trip! “hey tekapo! We're still going on our trip to Woods Lake near Kirkwood this weekend. Glad to hear you got some takers! Have a great time and don't forget to do a trip report with photos! I'll do one and take some pics as well. naked ape, I picked up my MSR Denali's this last weekend and I'll be trying them out this weekend. I'll let you know how I like them. I liked the price at $79. They are a little scratched up and say "SNAC" with some "rental numbers" written on them but I liked that price for my first pair & since I'm just getting into the sport. Does anyone know if I could just use some type of black paint to cover up that writing which will withstand the snow? Any ideas?” 4:11:14 PM 4/03/02 “HC, instead of black paint, try the Sharpee permanent marker. I use it on my snowboard, boots, etc. NA, don't know anyone who used the 8 series. The price was right, though. This was in Sequoia: Click on this and look at the next 3 pics. http://community.webshots.com/photo/18490079/24777423NlGvNiyHaN” 7:58:25 PM 4/03/02 10:04:11 PM 4/03/02
