Backpacker on the move “I am new to this thread and need help. I am moving to Columbus, Ohio - the land of nothing as far as I can tell. Are there any good trails to checkout within a reasonable driving distance? Also, what about gear? I like to buy online, but typically prefer to check it out in a store first. Also, are there any organizations to meet people who like to hike? It is difficult to find females who enjoy this stuff and I am leaving my ex-boyfriend behind. Any info. anyone can provide would be much appreciated!” 2:55:15 PM 3/25/02 Okay, so I'm a newbie! “Sorry to all! I just found the map of the US and thus have some info. regarding trails in Ohio.” 3:02:02 PM 3/25/02 “I'm just north of Dayton. There is a lot of great hiking with in a few hours drive of Columbus. There are a few people here who are in Columbus or came from there. I think the two biggest gear stores are Gallians and The Benchmark. They should be in the book. I have a web page of Ohio Hikes that might help some. There's a BUNCH of Michigan nuts that gets together every month that's not too far to drive. Some of us Buckeyes go up there now and again. Columbus itself can be a very cool town, depending on where ya go. Broad St. is real cool down by the campus. All kinds of foods from everywhere, cool shops, and Columbus gets all the cool concerts. They should have a web page for the city that can give you all the stuff to do in town. Welcome to Ohio where our state motto is "It's not all bad". LOL!” 3:05:47 PM 3/25/02 3:08:11 PM 3/25/02 Ohio... “Gateway to Indiana! hehehee! Ohio is the ONE blank on my Roadtrip Map. A niece recently moved there, tho - so I guess I'll break down and get there someday... Isn't Zeleski nearby? I saw it featured on Trailside on PBS.” 3:12:56 PM 3/25/02 “I've been checking out Zaleski and it looks like it could be a winner. I apologize if I came off rude. Just a little nervous about the move so I need an outlet once I get there. Nigal - thanks for the Columbus info.” 3:16:15 PM 3/25/02 “Make sure you have your VISA before trying to cross the river. He have quotas for hillbillies. Heehee!” 3:17:22 PM 3/25/02 “That hillbilly crack was for gojo, not liv. The Old Man's Cave area, while crowded and isn't backpacking, has to be on the short list. It is amazing! Zeleski has some great views on the south loop this time of year.” 3:21:08 PM 3/25/02 “Okay Nigal, help me out. I am not sure I get your humor, remember I am new to this thread and will be new to Ohio. What river??” 3:21:32 PM 3/25/02 “gojo is from Georgia. He has to cross the Ohio to get here. It's a joke. 8) Where are ya moving from Liv?” 3:29:10 PM 3/25/02 “Raleigh, North Carolina. It is going to be tough to leave the mountains and the ocean. I am sure I will adjust = )” 3:30:54 PM 3/25/02 High St. “Nigal's info was right on the money, with this exception...High St. is the street near campus with the night life. Broad St. is downtown and has more "high" life...or at least it used to when I lived there (early 90s). Benchmark is a good gear store--my folks still buy my Xmas presents there. Galyan's is also not bad. Columbus itself doesn't have an overabundance of hiking friendly parks, but I would second the Hocking Hills (Old Man's Cave) area for camping and day hikes.” 3:31:30 PM 3/25/02 “Liv- Ohio is not so bad for hiking! I've been doing it for years. Give me an e-mail and I will get you started in The Buckeye Trail Assoc. I went on a work party this weekend and we had a good time putting in three big switchbacks in the Hocking Hills area. We have a Zaleski hike coming up real soon. I'm always up for another hiking buddy. There are plenty of people here that will speak for me. Right people?” 4:32:50 PM 3/25/02 An Akronite Chimeing In “You wouldn't happen to be Liv Tyler, would you??? (heart thumping million beats per minute)” 5:09:32 PM 3/25/02 Not Liv Tyler “Sorry, but I do really like Steven Tyler (heart thumping million beats per minute)” 5:31:20 PM 3/25/02 “All these Ohioians and NO one wants to go backpacking a little south of Columbus!!!!!!!!!!!” 6:50:42 PM 3/25/02 “Not with you-you ditched me last time ---remember? Just kidding-I was out this weekend so I prob. wont be able to go out next.” 7:05:23 PM 3/25/02 “Benchmark - good for the high quality stuff & expertise. (Kenny Rd.) Galyans - Good prices, huge selection. High Banks Metroparks on Rt. 23 (North of 270)is a good day hike metropark that I used to frequent often. Liv, the nice thing about Columbus is that you are 2-5 hours away from some awsome hikes. You have Zaleski & Shawnee in Southern Ohio, Red River Gorge in Kentucky, many, many parks and trails in lower MI (ask Michigan Mountaineers) and great hikes in PA and WVA. If anything, you'll be apt to take more trips, just to find some decent hikes out of the area. Welcome to Ohio, we need more hikers here.” 7:44:43 PM 3/25/02 “well Buddha Bear dont you want to get out this weekend! im getting desperate! its gonna be a solo it looks like!” 8:02:08 PM 3/25/02 “liv, you will love columbus.... buddha bear is right on the money....there are many metro parks that are excellent for day hiking....battelle darby park on the west side, sharon woods park in westerville, blendon woods park on the east side, as well as highbanks park in worthington.... zaleski and shawnee are both within 1.5 hours and are both excellent loop trails for weekend hiking.... welcome to ohio!!” 9:11:44 PM 3/25/02 “Thanks for all the great info. Sounds like I have a lot to look forward to. You all are great!!” 9:18:39 PM 3/25/02 “No.... gonzo is great, the rest of us are mere mortals. lol!” 2:10:48 AM 3/26/02 “not great, only unbreakable!!” 2:59:06 AM 3/26/02 “Hi Liv. As a couple people have already mentioned, there are a few Michiganiacs that will frequent Ohio and will also ask Ohio folks to frequent Michigan. Keep you eyes peeled fr any thread that has to do w/ the Michigan Mountaineers. You will always be welcome. By the way... I'm in South East Michigan.” 7:43:11 AM 3/26/02 “Oh, and I've met nigal, wolfsister, buddur, buddha bear, and gonzo... and will tell you that any one of them will make a great hiking partner. So get out there!” 7:46:06 AM 3/26/02 Whatever You Do... “Just stay away from me...Be VERY afraid!” 7:55:12 AM 3/26/02 “Funny, I was going to mention that liv should stay away from Buddha, not Buddur! :) Just kidding, liv, the above-mentioned Ohio folks are all great people.” 10:40:41 AM 3/26/02 “but stay away from smiley girl... her name is quite deceiving! ;)” 12:19:19 PM 3/26/02 “That's right, I'm "deplorable" by association (with Tarabull).” 1:11:27 PM 3/26/02 “You guys wern't doing that kissing stuff again -were you?” 2:36:42 PM 3/26/02 “LMAO wolfsister! BTW - stay away from anybody in Ohio with a "bud", "gonz", or "gal" in thier trail name. Rumor has it they are axe murderers. FYI - Buddur's favorite hiking spot is the same woods where Jeffrey Dahmer used to maim animals, coincidence? I think not.” 3:24:59 PM 3/26/02 “Interesting.......” 3:32:34 PM 3/26/02 “Good thing I don't live in Ohio.” 9:02:17 AM 3/27/02 “Please stay away from New Rome, (a tiny village outside of Columbus). Unless you want a ticket and a big fine in Mayors Court....... lol” 12:38:18 AM 3/28/02 EAGLES LIVE “I just got myself 2 tickets to the show in Columbus on June 20th. Anyone one else going to see the Eagles this year? It's a bit of a long ride for me.....10 hrs I think but heck it's gunna be well worth it. Nothing like a good old road trip to a concert!!” 9:32:41 PM 4/29/02 “i live in Cincinnati if you swing by to play some golf, disc that is! eagles??? Kidding!” 9:33:41 PM 4/29/02 “hehehe” 9:57:04 PM 4/29/02 “I didn't want to have t take out a second morgage on the house to be able to go. LOL! Supossed to be a 3 1/2 show so it' gonna be worth the drive.” 10:13:51 PM 4/29/02 Pete “Dayton here!West of col. Eagles, saw them in 75. took my Mom!Have fun!” 11:11:52 AM 4/30/02
