Anyone from Ohio?

“I am new to this thread and need help. I am moving to Columbus, Ohio - the land of nothing as far as I can tell. Are there any good trails to checkout within a reasonable driving distance? Also, what about gear? I like to buy online, but typically prefer to check it out in a store first. Also, are there any organizations to meet people who like to hike? It is difficult to find females who enjoy this stuff and I am leaving my ex-boyfriend behind. Any info. anyone can provide would be much appreciated!”

“I'm just north of Dayton. There is a lot of great hiking with in a few hours drive of Columbus. There are a few people here who are in Columbus or came from there. I think the two biggest gear stores are Gallians and The Benchmark. They should be in the book.

I have a web page of Ohio Hikes that might help some. There's a BUNCH of Michigan nuts that gets together every month that's not too far to drive. Some of us Buckeyes go up there now and again.

Columbus itself can be a very cool town, depending on where ya go. Broad St. is real cool down by the campus. All kinds of foods from everywhere, cool shops, and Columbus gets all the cool concerts. They should have a web page for the city that can give you all the stuff to do in town.

The Old Man's Cave area, while crowded and isn't backpacking, has to be on the short list. It is amazing! Zeleski has some great views on the south loop this time of year.”

“Nigal's info was right on the money, with this exception...High St. is the street near campus with the night life. Broad St. is downtown and has more "high" life...or at least it used to when I lived there (early 90s).

Benchmark is a good gear store--my folks still buy my Xmas presents there. Galyan's is also not bad.

Columbus itself doesn't have an overabundance of hiking friendly parks, but I would second the Hocking Hills (Old Man's Cave) area for camping and day hikes.”

I went on a work party this weekend and we had a good time putting in three big switchbacks in the Hocking Hills area. We have a Zaleski hike coming up real soon. I'm always up for another hiking buddy. There are plenty of people here that will speak for me. Right people?”

High Banks Metroparks on Rt. 23 (North of 270)is a good day hike metropark that I used to frequent often.

Liv, the nice thing about Columbus is that you are 2-5 hours away from some awsome hikes. You have Zaleski & Shawnee in Southern Ohio, Red River Gorge in Kentucky, many, many parks and trails in lower MI (ask Michigan Mountaineers) and great hikes in PA and WVA. If anything, you'll be apt to take more trips, just to find some decent hikes out of the area.

buddha bear is right on the money....there are many metro parks that are excellent for day hiking....battelle darby park on the west side, sharon woods park in westerville, blendon woods park on the east side, as well as highbanks park in worthington....

zaleski and shawnee are both within 1.5 hours and are both excellent loop trails for weekend hiking....
