Current conditions?
Anyone been up to the NH White Mountains recently? What are the conditions like in terms of snow on the ground? Deep?

I'd like to do a 5-10 mile hike up there this weekend to start breaking in my Sundowners.

It's been a mild winter here in New England but there has been some snow this past week. Long term forcast for this weekend looks good - mid to high 40's.

Thanks.

here's a link with some live shots of what it's like right now. i went there a month ago, and it was awesome! not as much snow as some years, i'm sure, but plenty all the same. it really depends on your altitude at the time what the weather is doing. it would be raining one minute, and once we'd gotten up a mountain, it would be snow.

White Mountains

when we were there, the snow was soft underneath and frozen on top, so crampons would be very helpful!

Nice pics, lyra. Now I'm definitely going!

I'm not going to go high up into the mountains. I'll probably just do some hiking on the lower trails. Most likely I'll do that 5 mile loop that passes right by that really high waterfall (I forget the name!).

THanks!

25 years old. Just started hiking again last summer (did it a lot in high school). Love the White Mountains. Going to practically live up there this summer with my 5 year old son and our black lab.

Looks like snow a-plenty in the Whites
I just looked at some recent New Hampshire trail reports and it appears that there is plenty of snow up there. Bring your snowshoes! Dang, I wish I could get away. It sounds like fun!

Thanks, Pennsy. That's a definite bookmark.

Not sure I'll need snow shows where I'm going, though. It's pretty low altitude. It may be a good time for me to pick up a pair; a lot of places must be having sales right about now.

Either way, I'm there this weekend. I'll take a lot of pics to post!

you can rent them for $10.00 at the hardware (slash) outdoor store in Gorham(sp?).

Mebbe they'll sell you a pair of old rentals?

Altitude can make a difference. I'm no expert, but Belle and I hit the Whites on last Xmases roadtrip. The snow seemed to get deeper with every upward step!

Y'all have fun, ya hear?

Hey, iffin you want some snowshoes, how about this: Decathlon (MVP) is having their winter clearance right now. I imagine many others are also. Snowshoes are 50% off right now. Other things are 70 % off right now and they gave me a bunch of stuff that was 50% off for 70% off, saying it was a special deal!!! Man, did I drop a little coin in there!!!

Some of the things I got : Airwalk snowboard for slasher for $60, double ratchet bindings for $21, fleece vests (plural) $4.49, microfleece pants $6, hiking socks (coolmax) $2.79, acorn slippers (fleece) $3. I'm telling you , bring the plastic!!!

Presidential Range
Does anyone know the names of the mountains in the Presidential Range? Also, is there a website with beta on trails, huts and conditions?

Gremlin - Dave Metsky has a great White Mountains info site.

Many trip reports with photos, trail conditions, weather, hut info etc... a real valuable resource for anyone interesting in hiking the Whites.

For the Presidentials, click here for an excellent Presidential traverse trip report with pictures.

MadRiver
The Whites received about 17 inches of new snow in the last week. Depending on where you plan to hike, snowshoes and crampons would be advised. I did the Welsh/Dickey loop last week and it was very icy on the ledges. With the mild weather that we have been experiencing as of late, the snow melts during the day and then turns to ice during the night causing some slippery conditions especially above tree line. Although this site was already posted, it gives area conditions as well as a cam shot of Mount Washington. http://www.mountwashington.org/backcountry/index.html

Unfortunately, I had a previous commitment this weekend that I completely forgot about. My hike is now delayed until next weekend. :(

Still appreciate all the great links. I'll need them next week.
