How would we measure it?
By the number of buzzards you can knock of a sh !t truck at 50 paces?

"Man that was a five buzzard trip. I need a shower bad!"

Bag Night Who Cares
I for one do not give a hoot. I hiked for ten straight months last year doing the ECT. From Key West to Cape Gaspe for a total of 4518 miles and 287 wonderful nights under sky. When I was on the AT I averaged 20 miles a day but I noticed that some hikers had to do more and also go faster like it was a race. What a loss as they passed up some great view points and some great conversation. I took time off when I was tired and enjoyed my fellow hikers. People like ATChaz. Flagman, Teaman, Shamus, Trapper and Okie, B&B, Altair and many others. Going up to Denali in May for the Summer to work and then Oct 1 I'm southbound on the AT for a nice slow fall/winter thru-hike. Any one game?

I work when I have to support my habit, but I'm good at what I do and I pursue jobs that last for short contracts only in the outdoor industry. I'm not interested in being a payment maker or owning a suv. Raised my kids, booted everything else and plan on seeing everything I can.

walkindude - I have a lot of respect for your adventures, feats, and your apparent outstanding condition and capabilities. However, one can get into life threatening situations. The weather is usually the cause. Experiencing a williwaw or a willopaw at the wrong time can cause real problems. Other problems sometimes arise because of stupidity or stubbornness.

I broke the rules on Adak Is. while the ship was refueling and went out alone and without having completed their training class. (The instructor had failed to show.) Everything was fine until I found myself unable to retreat from a ledge and, while hanging from the tundra, I had to swing myself across an open space to a safe position. It was a long way down, but, fortunately, the tundra held.

williwaw :- a sudden, violent rush of cold air blowing from a mountainous coast to the sea.

willopaw (sp.?) a sudden, violent storm with heavy rain and winds in excess of 100 mph, usually moving from sea to land in the Aleutian Islands.

I know thing can happen anytime, anywhere, & anyplace but backpacking in general is very safe. I see more danger & risk driving to and from work everyday. Noone considers a comute to work adventure.
I'm just saying that I think people confuse recreation with adventure.
Adventure is an undertaking that involves risk or danger.

OK. I'll admit it:
I only go backpacking because I'm hoping to see a crash.
