Interesting thread over in alt.rec.hiking
There's a thread on being lost over in alt.rec.hiking. Here's a tidbit:

> Boone explored the Yellowstone country in his seventies. Quite a man. I

> mit bewildered for three days."

> I ain't never been lost, neither, but I've been stuck out on unplanned

> all waiting for you with fire in their eyes.

So anybody get lost so bad on a dayhike you had to spend the night and hike out the next day?

Yes.

I spent an unplanned night out when a k-tag I referenced was off by a township (tag said T.5N when it was really T.6N).

I thought my compass was way off or my map reading was way off, after all K-tags are posted by surveyors and so they can't be wrong...

Yes, I actually fell for my boyfriend's claim of an infallible sense of direction. My dog didn't help, he was happy to keep walking. My sister, who I was supposed to meet for dinner, bought me a GPS for Christmas.

Once while I was hunting with my brother in the desert in eastern Oregon. We ended up not getting back to our camp until nearly sunrise. In hindsight we violated on of the getting lost rules and not getting all fatigued and worn out. We were just fine though, and we could finally justify all the stuff we carried in our daypacks.

I hiked with my friend Rick in a storm....snowed all day, and white out. He kept saying we were at one place, and I kept saying "no, we're here". Since he was a guy, and had done hiking in the Himalayas, I kinda said "ok" and let him lead the way. We ended up going downhill, and had to follow our tracks back up, then argued again. We went his way again. I will stick to my guns next time. I knew where we were all the time....I did the trip a month later, and I was right. I wasn't lost, he was, and wouldn't admit it.

Orienteering and Kayaking
I haven't gotten lost while BPing yet...still new to the activity.

Got lost orienteering while searching for the last control...the organizer sent 8 people looking for me. Embarrassing.

Got lost on a rented kayak...went in circles on the Thousand Island River (Quebec), I got confused and was going in every direction trying to find my way back to the rental place. I was past due for 4 hours (11pm)...they sent out 4 motor boats looking for me. The fire department was on the shore shining their huge spot lights into the river. The police called the police in my city to check if I went home. Finally, I spotted the lights and paddled back to them. Focking embarrassing.

Any longer, they would be dragging the river for me!!! Next day I checked a map and calculated the distance I paddled...about 14 miles.

In both cases I was exhausted but kept going...I should have stopped and thought for a moment. The worst was the kayaking fiasco...there were bungalows lining the shore...it never crossed my mind to go and ask for a phone to call the rental place (I had the rental slip with me) duh.

All I need now is to pilot a plane...that way I would complete the set...land, sea and air.

Once in Acadia, my boys and I were hiking up Mt Dorr. I led up, then they were going to lead over 2 small mountains. Well, of course they were just racing and went off course. So we had to head uphill to the top. (Only one top). And come back down where the girls were waiting for us. I'm glad it was only Acadia, the hills there aren't too big, but it was a good lesson on following the blazes.

I haven't gotten lost yet, but have been in the situation where I thought I had gone past a trail intersection, or been unable to find a trail intersection. Or started down a trail and went back because it didn't seem to match the map.

I've not been lost hiking, although my hiking partners were a bit disoriented.

Been paddling in Quetico get lost every time. Funny how things look different from the water than on land.

There is a certain Michigan Mountaineer (who shall remain nameless) who has a knack for getting us lost at least once on every hike.

I got lost at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore with a handful of 5 year old boys on a kindergarten field trip.

One of the moms found us climbing all over the GIGANTIC Allegheny locomotive......there's one in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn.

The buses were loaded and ready to go!
