rent stove b/w Phoenix & Canyon???View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 8 of 8 messages posted.
need to rent a stove for Canyon trip??? “Three friends and I are traveling to the Grand Canyon in 10 days for some backcountry camping. Earlier this morning I spoke with our airline and airport authority to check that all our camping equipment would get through security. I discovered that our MSR fuel bottles (new or used, and empty) will most likely not make it through security. So I have a problem. Can anyone help me? Since I can't take my MSR bottle I figure I might as well not take the stove. So, I will need one stove and enough fuel to boil water for 7 meals for four people. Does anyone know of a place between Phoenix and the Grand Canyon that rents stoves? Please help.” 12:01:11 PM 3/27/02 Hit the mall! “You should just swing by the Metrocenter Mall on the way up through Phoenix and grab a new bottle and a can of fuel. It's such a small price relative to a plane ticket. There's an outdoor shop on the west side of the mall that's be easy to jump in and out of. For fuel you might be able to drop in a little unleaded gas- it works in most stoves.” 12:54:57 PM 3/27/02 “I just called the store at the canyon and another one here in Flagstaff. It costs enough to rent a stove for 10 days that you would be better off buying a bottle. The canyon (928 638 2262) wants $5 for the first day and $3 for each day after plus you would need to buy butane bottles. The store in Flag wants a $45 deposit and then $3 a day. The Flag store is Peace Surplus. (928 779 4521) It is near the corner where you turn up Hwy. 180 to go to the canyon. The woman said she carries MSR bottles and fuel for them. She also said they sell a $20 stove that takes butane. There is another store--Popular Surplus (928 774 0598) that is on your left--west side of the road as you come into town from Phoenix--next to Bun Huggers restaurant. They did not do rentals but they have a pretty good selection of hiking supplies.” 1:57:33 PM 3/27/02 “More answers at rei.com This is a cross-post.” 2:00:16 PM 3/27/02 “If you plan on staying at a hotel before you hit the trail just ship your bottle to the hotel care of "your guest bredmakr arriving on X date." I used to that for customers on the road and it worked quite well but you need to call the hotel to be sure that they will accept the package. My bottles are unmarked and are not identifiable as fuel bottles (unless you are a hiker). I'd just remove anything that says "fuel" wash then out so they don't smell like fuel and pack them open and see if they make it through security.” 3:48:43 PM 3/27/02 “Yeah, just write "Aftershave" or "contact lens solution" on the bottles.” 4:05:56 PM 3/27/02 “Yeah, the worst that can happen is the plane could go down” 6:36:41 PM 3/27/02 “I've never heard of not being able to check in enpty fuel bottles. I think someone don't know what they're talking about. Carry the stove and just buy a fuel bottle and fuel at Flagstaff. They got most anything you would need. They also sell supplies at the Canyon at the shopping mall in the park.” 7:10:27 PM 3/27/02
