DSL anyone?
My service via modem is getting so slow and increasingly unreliable. Was wondering if any one has DSL and what to you think?

The local DSL providers lost my business, took 'em too long to get me hooked up and stood me up a couple of times. Cable got my business and its great.

I have DSL on order. Earthlink is supposed to be shipping my modem so I can install it myself. Last week we bought a new computer with a cd burner, so now we need faster download speed.

I have DSL at work and it is great compared to a phone modem we had but at home I have cable and it beats DSL.

DSL here is great!
Cable was fine when I had it, but if there is high cable traffic in the area, speed suffers. That never happens with DSL because of the direct connection. Downloading at 1.5mbs ALL the time rules.

I currently have cable, but used to have DSL. Both are great compared to phone modems.

I have had Earthlink DSL for over a year with very little trouble and higher download speed than they advertised. I did try two other DSL providers before them that insisted I spend $300 to run in another phone line. Earthlink used my existing lines and sent the self-installation kit.

They did raise the price to $49, which was a bummer. But we have a network in our house with 3 to 4 computers on-line all the time with DSL access. (Sometimes it is faster to email my son than go talk to him).

When you live as far out in the sticks as I do, you're just grateful that the phones work most of the time. They keep promising DSL availability, but I'll believe it when I see it.

DSL at work (faster). Cable at home (more reliable).

DSL
We got DSL at about the same time we got a new computer. We have a very annoying problem, and can't tell whether it is the computer or the line. Every 5 minutes or so, the whole thing hangs up and freezes, for about a minute. (We can switch to another program, just not download). Then goes back to the normal fast service. It is still better than the old modem, but it gets really frustrating to have to find a book, run to the bathroom, pick up the hand weights, etc. while waiting for the system to come back to life.

T span for me. I had a friend who worked for DSL.com and he was always harking that DSL offered more security than does cable. Not sure if there was truth in this or sales hype. However, the times I have seen the speed on DSL I have been impressed. However the fastest download speeds I have seen have been from Satellite. Flip side was cost and no up load capability. But it was fast.

DSL vs Cable The big question
There are pro's and cons to each, DSL is potentialy faster (as mentioned in the above posts you don't share the line with others) however line conditions will effect speed. Cable is generally more reliable however if they have over sold in your area speed can be a problem. I'd have to say that the decision is very regional, I live in St Louis and which is better can vary depending on what part of the city you live in. I've had DSL for a couple of years and had some trouble with reliablity at first (but I was an early adopter) my big complaint now is support (I use South Western Bell).

I'd say to find some people in your area with DSL/Cable before making a decision.

Hooked up DSL around the country...it's like everything else, great in some areas...idiots in others...check with the friends to see how it is...

Cable sucked for me at first, but they've beefed up things and I never go below 1000k down...

DSL
I have DSL and I'm very happy. Cable isn't available, or at least it wasn't at the time. I installed it myself, so for jus the normal monthly fee and $75 for the modem it was a deal. The only issue I had was when I upgraded to XP and the manufacturer of the modem didn't have drivers. I ended up finding a set of third party drivers that did the trick.

I knew some cable users that had problems with the bandwith hog neighbors reducing them to sub-dial in performance, but I'm sure the cable campanies will improve that just to keep in buisness.

Ginny, my father had the same problem using a USB DSL modem. Turned out his problem wasn't enough phisical memory. The DSL was eatting it all up creating data buffers. The solution was to increase his memory to 256 MB. A nother thing that was supposed to help was swithching to either Win 2000 or XP because of the way thier memory manager works, but I can't verify that.

Thanks for all the help. I'm in Chicago and cable has the reputation of being very slow because of too many users.

Guess I'll have to find more Chicago folks who use DSL to see about reliability.

Again, THANKS!

I'm biased

now that that is out of the way...

DSL is shared too... but only after your line gets to the phone facility, and you have to be close to that. DSL (at least out here) is pay by connection speed. Cable is flat rate, my regular dl speed it 2.5mbs (faster than my fiber connection at work) the DSL connections some of my friends have are the same price for 350-400k... yes you do have to dial up DSL (like once a day usually).

Major complaint from people with DSL is service related. If you have a problem it can take weeks to get it resolved. The DSL provider blames the ISP, the ISP blames the phone company, everyone blames the hardware provider.... back and forth back and forth. Cable is typically just the Cable company (that can suck too though) and the hardware... much quicker problem resolution

At present I can't justify the cost for home use of either the DSL or Cable. I gave up cable tv for the same reason. I felt I was never getting my moneys worth. Although I spend more hours at the keyboard than on the couch, I still can't justify paying upwards of 40 something dollars or more a month for a internet connection to basically surf, check email and download mass K every few evenings.

Plus the weather is breaking and the days are getting longer. I might try this Zoomtown thing they have here or look into a Dish setup. I just refuse to get cable after I slung it for several years. CABLE GUY!

My phone connection is alright, heck, I don't even pay for that. I guess I rather save my pennies!

I have DSL at home and the baby is fast. However, trying to get the WHOLE PAGE to appear on TT is rare anymore. I get the TT header but most of the time I fail to get everyone's posts. I have to "refresh" the page, and sometines that even takes 2-3 times.

DSL is more secure but slower then cable. Cable can be blazing fast but it you are on the same node as your Neighborhood, so it can get congested and slow at times and it is a bit of a security risk. I personally like my 11 mbps connection.

I don't know if 11mbps is normal for cable, but I always get a 10 MBPS connection for download and get extremely large files very very quickly. I don't think cable is that much faster than ADSL if 11 MBPS is what your actually getting.

Yup, I'm on DSL here and it's great !! I'm usually downloading around 160 to 170 kbps

It sure makes that Intranet WAN at work a painful experience, by comparison, though

I'm back to dial-up after loosing DSL in a divorce and frankly I don't notice a huge difference. I don't do a lot on line but email and Trail Talk though. I suppose if I did a lot of downloading and working with pictures I might be more frustrated. I spend all day at work staring at a computer screen - I tend to not do much at home.

I would check tho that the price they gave you is for everthing. Normally you have to pay for the dsl line and your internet connection. $34 is pretty darn cheap.

#34 is cheap. I pay more, but I love the DSL. Unfortunately I have been without it for a week. My modem fried and I am awaiting the new one, but music downloads and such are a lot faster without dealing with the dial up. Of course, not to mention my daughter whining when the phone service and internet conflict...

My house is to far from the switching center.
Got rid of my cable TV for a mini sat dish (Directv) so the cable modem isn't a option.

The only additional charge is $12.95 for shipping and handling the self install kit/modem. The $50 activation fee has been waived on their current promotion.
