“There are the Family line..the recreational line..and the professional line of these motorola 2-way radios.

The rec and pro line are goo up to 5miles. but require a fcc license and fee. how do they regulate this?...anyone know?..are those channels locked until you pay or get licensed? or is it honor system? Cause it's not hard to buy them without the license.”

“It's probably like the way CB licenses were at the end of the CB craze. There's a form in the box, you fill it out and send it in with the fee. A couple of (weeks, months, years) later, you get your license. Until then, it's legal to use.

Of course, if you don't pay your fee, the men in black helicopters triangulate your position using your illegal FRS transmission, swoop down on you in the middle of the night, and abduct you for strange medical experiments, during which the implant a post hypnotic suggestion to wear hats lined with tinfoil, and to post meaningless drivel to backpacking forums.

“The GMRS models do require an FCC license but no one is gonna know if you don't have one. They will work right out of the box. Even though they have more range than the FRS models, they're still limited pretty much to line-of-sight, and the 5 mile range is under perfect conditions.”

“In 97 or 98, I secured about 50 cell/ 2 way phones for our business. We still have them today. I think I pay somewhere in the range of $60- $80 per month, per phone. However, I don't recall the start up costs. The 2 way option works great for what we do, but programming it can be a pain. I have carried on a two way call from south of Indianapolis to North Chicago with perfect reception. The fun thing is that we have adopted the "over" and "out" vocabulary when talking on the two way. “I have two FR-60's and a newer model I don't know the number of. All Motorolas.

The radios work on line-of-sight, basically. I use mine while hunting with friends (yes, it is legal) and with the family while skiing. I have had a perfectly clear coversation from as far away as 7-8 miles.

I like the FR-60 model because it has the 14 channels (all makes and models use these channels) and they have like 38 sub-channels per channel. That way you are very unlikely to get coversation from others. When I use just the base channel, and not use the sub-channels, I have gotten in on others conversations.”

Its just improper to use extraneous talk and its kinda like pulling one's pud.

You are either "over" OR "out", but never both.

Sometimes just keying the mic suffices as an "out".

Of course in the movies and TV these mooks are saying, "Roger, wilco, over and out", so every other dork parrots that.

“While my wife and I were at Disneyland with our friends, we tried to use my FR-50's to talk to each other. Now keep in mind that the FR-50's have no sub channels.
We overheard more of the funniest conversations than I can recall. We would even start talking to people we did not know who thought they were talking to the person they tried to reach. It went something like this.

me:"I'm over hear by the Matterhorn"
billy:"I am at space mountain"
unk:"Is this Billy BOB?"
me:"yes"

You can imagine how it went from there. I know-maybe not funny for the people trying to get ahold of each other, but it was a laugh riot for me and my friends.”

“When I was in WalMart yesterday, I decided to look at the FRS radios. Low and behold, they were on sale.......$18.00 a piece.... Model T5200.

At that price, I thought a few might come in handy.”

“We have the Motorola 289. Even tho it has a 2 mi range, we've used it 5 miles apart (for a rescue). I had to climb up a rock face, SnowDude hiked out 5 miles to try to get horses in to take someone out. We were able to talk, (they wanted her to try to walk out), and the horses came in.

We took them on the JMT, and used it several times (contact our resuppliers, when we got into trouble on Mt Tyndall & got separated, etc).

We've used them in the Sierras on trips where we both drive. I'm a weaver, the reflectors keep me in line....and SnowDude is always asking if I'm falling asleep.”

“I know my Motorola FRS 50's work with the Cobra 14 Ch. radios so long as there are no sub-channels. I'm not sure but I dont think if it has sub-channels that it will work with a radio that does not. Does anybody know for sure???”

“WL, if you set the radio with subchanels on "sub" zero, I believe it will communicate with a radio that doesnt have sub chanels.”

“GOt chelle the t6310...hehe cause i want the 6320 but i'm gonna have to order it. The 6310 is sweet...been listening to NOAA channels, and it picks up radio stations great..and the volume can be earshattering. it's packed full of features, and it's a 2-way radio...i can't wait till i get the 6320...the 6310 manual has instructions for all the 6000 models and i'm stoked just by reading it!!”
