“Howdy fellas.. got an email today regarding Pinhoti. Would one of you folks in that area post your thoughts on his questions, as listed below?.. I will email him back and tell him to go to this thread, sure he will really appreciate the background and knowledge this site brings. Thanks in advance! ================================== 1) I'm trying to find a good trail guide book. 2) I'm trying to find info on sections 3 and 4 Piedmont down to Heflin) 3) Directions to the trail heads and stuff. 4) I'm also trying to find out if anyone runs a shuttle out there, to pick us up in Heflin at our car and drop us off at the trail head in Piedmont. If you know anyone that can help or provide info I'll build a shrine to you on the trail. Thanks, Randy” 10:29:36 AM 3/28/02 10:47:26 AM 3/28/02 “Check out this site. It has a trail review for each section. They also have a message board. Several people have been planning thru-hikes. You can go back and read their Q&A. http://www.alabamatrail.org/hikingAL/ I seem to recall a fellow on there who volunteered to shuttle some folks. I live about an hour away from the Cheaha section of the Pinhoti. TD, if you're going on this one and want company let me know. I've spent most of my built up points with the wife, but could possibly go in debt for one more trip.” 10:52:38 AM 3/28/02 “I thru hiked the Pinhoti in Feb 2000. #1, I never found ANY trail guides. The best source of info I found was this web site: http://www.alabamatrail.org/hikingAL/ #2 See #1. My maps don't tell much, but I'll still have the entire set. You can get them from http://www.aloutdoors.com/ Alabama Outdoors. I don't think you can order them over the web, but you can buy them in B'ham. #3 Directions are on the site in #1. I only did the trail head on highway 278 and at the other end on 77. I carried all my supplies so no re-supply points I can give. #4 I have no idea! You can contact me at ebengman@yahoo.com if you have any other questions. My favrite pasrt and on my places to stay list for next time is the waterfalls south of Five Points - section 6. I also liked the views from the south side of Cheaha. As for my shrine, something near water, like near the Lower Shoal Shelter (my favorite) would be nice, although I didn't stay there myself.” 10:55:46 AM 3/28/02 “The complete set of maps is available at the General Store located at the entrance to Cheaha SP. You could prolly get a taxi in Heflin.” 1:04:35 PM 3/28/02 US Forest Service Heflin “My Special Forces unit used the entire Forrest area you are concerned about for training exercises...the Forest Service has an entire map of the trail, and guide instructions in thier Heflin Office, or at least DID, 3/4 Years ago.” 3:13:49 PM 3/28/02
