I am getting into some problem with excessive bandwidth usage.. soo.. I got a question..

if I transfer the MP3s that I suspect are the biggest part of high my usage is running high.. to ANOTHER site.. so the main site links to that.. does the server STILL see that as excess bandwidth usage?

The bandwidth usage comes from wherever those MP3s are being stored. If you move them, that will free up bandwidth on the site you moved them FROM.

I had the same problem on my site. I store a lot of movie trailers which cause massive amounts of traffic. Moving some of the trailers to another site helped free up some bandwidth. And it's all seamless to my users. The links are still on my site, but some of those links point to movie trailers stored elsewhere. The user doesn't know the difference.

You mean the server that you've linked from? It shouldn't. It should only be measuring the amount of data it transfers from itself. If you put the MP3's on another site and link to them, then that other server should be the one that racks up the byte count for serving the MP3's. But not completely understanding the vagaries of HTML, I couldn't say with 100% certainty.

The only thing that makes me wonder is what HTML does when someone clicks on the link to follow it, instead of right-clicking to bring up the pop-up menu that has "Save Target As" on it. I'm pretty sure that if they do the right-click and do a "Save Target As" that the server that served up the webpage is completely bypassed.

You know, the more I think about it, the more sure I am thatonly the other server will be involved, unless your link is some sort of redirect through your server. A normal link like that shouldn't ever hit a server other than the one the link specifies.

Is that clear as mud? The answer is, move them and you should see a drop in bandwidth use on your original server.

When you post your answer, could you please use this alternate box so that it looks like I came up with the answer?

HTML does nothing but tell the browser how to display information. It's a markup language not a programming language.

In links all html does is tell the browser where to go.

TD just move the MP3s off the server you are on and it will free up some bandwidth.

Not a problem
Actually the HTML is code on your system by the time you view it. SO, the action the browser executes for the code for a download is the same regardless if the downloaded file is on the site the HTML page came from, or the site the file is on. The only difference that COULD happen is that some servers do not allow downloading files unless the IP is actively logged in such as an FTP. But that would be easy. Place the actaul links to the downloadable files on the same server where the MP3's reside. Then just have your normal web page on one server, and all the pages with the high bandwith files on the other server. It is actually very easy to do. My web site ists on at least 3 different servers. I once tried for a 4th server, but there was problems with the way that server handeled anonymous FTP log ins. Now I'm just looking at getting one big server - but then I have to pay!

www.hikinghq.com?
My current site is a 50 meg site that I use 34.7 megs. It is only supposed to be a 20 meg site, but they changed it AFTER I set up the account, and apparently I float them so many hits they just added a pop up and didn't charge me any extra like it says they will in the site info - my account is a banner accound without pop ups just FYI. I also have a bandwith limit of 1GB a month that I exceed regularly which they have also never charged me for (again, like they say they will).

I also have a sepperate site and account for both my guest book and forum which are free sites with their own advertisers - no big deal there. I attempted to set up a seperate account on another free server for some of my other stuff like pictures and such, but that didn't work well so I DXed the idea.

I'm now looking for pay hosting sites that will offer me 100 megs and a few pop3 3 accounts as well as FTP for viewers, Frontpage Extensions, and detailed hit statistics. The front runner to get is www.PowWeb.com wher I could also get my own domain name. If I do that I'll have to get an easy to remember domain like www.hikinghq.com. I did a search at one time and all the ones I wanted to use were gone.

Free ride is over!
ARGHHH!

Today my site was shut down because of excessive bandwith useage!

I guess you get what you pay for.

Hey Sarge...
My site The Backcountry is hosted by Preciscion Web Hosting. I'm on the standard (50M) program now. It might be worth a look. If you sign-up tell them I referred you (my URL will do). Good luck!

Brinkster seems to work for me. Although they don't offer front page extensions. That's for those that like Bill Gates to do all their code writing for them anyway. They support active server pages and FTP. Cheap too.

Can I use your image on the left side of your home page? (The woman hiker with her hair flowing in the wind.)

I'm just keeping a hidden web-site for others to look at day-hikes and the like.

Thanks guys, but I read your posts too late. I already set up with a server and registered my domain:

www.hikinghq.net

It isn't up yet, but it will be soon.

Maybe someday Matt the Webmaster could do a hosting service for backpacking sites.

Band width usage is in no way related to how much "stuff" you store in your personal directories on your providers servers. It is in reference to Kbytes of data, or data tranfer. If you're transferring more data through your ISP than they allow in your contract with them, it matters not where that data is stored or where it is coming from. So moving it from one place to another before you upload or download it through your providers equipment is still going to leave you in the same position, which is exceeding the number of kbytes that they will alow you to transfer in any given period. Make sense?

Oops.... I just read through this thread a little more carefully, including the opening post. Do you have a web site on your ISP's servers that many people access? If that is the case, and the "band width usage" is a result of that, then yes, moving your "stuff" to a third parties servers will reduce or eliminate the problem.

A lesson the owners of this board need to learn. From the recent mySQL errors I've seen on here lately, they are way too exposed.
