Do you have the "ultimate"or "lite" chair kit?

That is the same model I have and I know that sometimes it is a real bear to get the rods of the support tracks for storing them back in the storage compartment at the top of the mat. I've found that it helps a bit to let some of the air out of the mat before trying to pull the top tab of the stay holder off of the rod.

so they don't come straight out the top...kinda breaks near the top like a pez dispenser?

Yes, at least on my model (2 years old) they do. Mine has a small grab tab about 2-3 inchs from the top of each stay holder tube. Let out some air then pull the tab up and over the top of the plastic rod and then remove the rod.

why not
Take the pad out of the chair kit, leave the stays in and roll the shair up around the stays. Then just stuff the chair kit in your pack?

Less headache than what you're trying...you have to carry the stays anyway.

I have one and you have to force the stays out through the small openings near the end of the sleeves. You may have to use a little muscle, but once you know exactly where the openings are, it gets a lot easier. The more deflated, the easier it is.

I leave my converter on all the time and don't need the stuff sack any more. I love it. I don't mind fussing with the stays for the comfort it provides.

the way I remove the stays is to grab the pull tab between my thumb and second bone in my index finger and I place the second joint of the index finger on top of the end of the stay. As I pull on the tab I am pushing the stay down with the second joint - its sort of a rocking action - the joint is pushing down the stay as the thumb and index finger are pulling the tab. Anyways that is what works for me - the end of the stay pops right out of the slit by the tab.

YMMV

Mine is so old the stays don't come out.
I fold mine in half (or as close to half as I can get) then roll it parallel to the stays.
Hope that helps.

i finally got around to messing with mine again...it's real easy...but on mine the slits are on the side of the stay pocket facing in...so you just push the stay to the inside till the tip pops out
