LONDON — Britain's Queen Mother, Elizabeth, who won the country's loyalty and admiration during World War II at the side of King George VI, died Saturday, Buckingham Palace said. She was 101 years old.

She died "peacefully in her sleep" this afternoon at Royal Lodge, Windsor, the Palace said.

"Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother had become increasingly frail in recent weeks following her bad cough and chest infection over Christmas," said a Palace spokesman.

"Her condition deteriorated this morning and her doctors were called," the spokesman said, adding that she "died peacefully in her sleep at 3:15 this afternoon at Royal Lodge."

101 ain't so bad. She lived a full life and then some. My heart is heavy for England this day. They have lost a great figure head.

Janet Leigh
LOS ANGELES – Janet Leigh, whose shocking murder in the classic Alfred Hitchcock thriller "Psycho," was credited with making generations of film fans think twice about stepping into a motel room shower, has died at her Beverly Hills home, her daughter's publicist confirmed Monday. She was 77.

The actress' husband, Robert Brandt, and her daughters, actresses Kelly Curtis and Jamie Lee Curtis, were at their mother's side when she died Sunday, said Heidi Schaeffer, a spokeswoman for Jamie Lee Curtis.

"She died peacefully at home," Schaeffer told The Associated Press.

Lee had suffered from vasculitis, an inflammation of the blood vessels, for the past year.

The stunning blonde beauty enjoyed a long and distinguished career, appearing in such films as the 1962 political thriller "The Manchurian Candidate" and in Orson Welles' 1958 film noir classic "Touch of Evil."

But she gained her most lasting fame in 1960's "Psycho" as the embezzling office worker who is stabbed to death in the shower by cross-dressing madman Anthony Perkins. The role earned her an Oscar nomination as best supporting actress.

Hitchcock compiled the shower sequence in 70-odd takes of two and three seconds each, for which Leigh spent seven days in the shower. Rumors circulated that she was nude, but she wore a flesh-colored moleskin.

Although tame by today's standards, the scene was shocking for the time for its brutality.

Leigh wrote in her 1995 book "Psycho: Behind the Scenes in the Classic Thriller" that the filming was easy until the last 20 seconds when she had to express total horror as her character was being slashed to death.

She often said she hadn't been able to take a shower since the movie.

"It's not a hype, not something I thought would be good for publicity," she insisted. "Honest to gosh, it's true."

Leigh's entry into films occurred in storybook Hollywood style. Born in the small town of Merced on July 6, 1927, she was a student at the University of the Pacific when retired screen star Norma Shearer saw her photograph at a ski resort. Shearer recommended the teenager to talent agent Lew Wasserman, who negotiated a contract at MGM for $50 a week.

Dubbed Janet Leigh (her birth name was Jeanette Helen Morrison), she starred at 19 in her first movie, "The Romance of Rosy Ridge," opposite Van Johnson, and her salary was quickly boosted to $150 a week.

Soon she was one of the busiest stars at MGM, appearing in six movies in 1949.

Other film credits included "Act of Violence," "Little Women," "Holiday Affair," "Strictly Dishonorable," "The Naked Spur," "Living It Up," "Jet Pilot," "Bye Bye Birdie" and "Safari."

Her leading men included Frank Sinatra, James Stewart, John Wayne, Charlton Heston, Van Heflin, Robert Mitchum and Victor Mature.

Leigh also appeared opposite her daughter Jamie Lee Curtis in the 1980 thriller "The Fog" and made occasional television appearances in her later years.

She published her autobiography, "There Really Was a Hollywood," in 1984.

The actress had been married twice before coming to Hollywood. Her first union, in 1942, was annulled. The second, in 1946, ended in divorce two years later.

She married the father of her daughters, actor Tony Curtis, in 1951, when both were at the height of their fame.

They appeared in four films together and were hailed as the "ideal couple," but they divorced in 1963. She refused to criticize him afterward.

"Tony and I had a wonderful time together; it was an exciting, glamorous period in Hollywood," she once said. "A lot of great things happened, most of all, two beautiful children."

She married Brandt, a businessman, in 1962.

Information on funeral services was pending Monday, but Schaeffer said Leigh had requested that instead of flowers donations be made to the Motion Picture and Television Fund.

I love the dead before they’re cold
They’re bluing flesh for me to hold
Cadaver eyes upon me see nothing
I love the dead before they rise
No farewells, no goodbyes
I never knew your rotting face
While friends and lovers mourn your silly grave
I have other uses for you, darling
We love the dead
We love the dead, yeah

LAGOS, Nigeria (CNN) -- A Nigerian passenger plane carrying a "large number" of school children headed home for the holidays crashed and burned Saturday at an airport in Port Harcourt.

One-hundred-and-three of the 110 people on board were killed, Nigeria's federal aviation authority said.

Students from a Catholic secondary school in Abuja were aboard the plane, returning home for the holidays, according to the Rev. Felix Femi Ajakaye, spokesman for the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria in the nation's capital, Abuja.

The students, who ranged in age from 10 to 18 years old, attended Loyola Jesuit College in Abuja, the reverend said. It is unclear if any of them were among the survivors.
