Suggestion Needed. Relocating
Hey Guys,
I finally got laid off. Now, I'm
thinking of either moving west (Southern CA) or back up to Michigan where I came some from.

Anyone in the San Diego area?
How's the tech. industry over there? Wouldn't even mind a part time position. Just want to get
the hell out of MO.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Cheers,
Lefty

Well, the Great Lakes have a lot to offer (and no added salt) w/o some of the issues SoCal faces. Always a balancing act: winter/skeeters/rust vs. earthquakes/mudslides/wild fires. Housing and other costs of living probably are less in Michigan, but I don't know if the tech sector is strong there currently (it isn't doing too bad in Wisconsin).

However, either place has fewer billboards per capita than Mizzou.

Lefty12, Oakland and Macomb counties (north of detroit) have substantial tech. indutry stuff. The down side is that lots of it is affiliatted with the " Big 2" auto companies.

Salt Lake City and Missoula also have a growing tech sector and are within easy driving times of ample outdoor destinations.

Biz,
It took planning and a whole 3 months.

Michigan certainly sounds good
and I miss the U.P. Damn!!!
Seems to be the best place in the mid west for almost everything.

With the tariffs on steel, me thinks the auto-related industry is not the place to go, right now.

You sound like you are looking for an excuse to move back to Michigan.

Okay, here's a couple...

1) Everyone is laid back. You don't get many trendy yuppie hikers around here. And you don't get the hyperelitist extreme sport people. You just get a lot of fun trail that most anyone with the inclination can do.

2) Change of seasons: I know. Some people don't think that's an advantage, but it creates for interesting ever-changing landscape. And hiking in hot weather is not that fun. It never gets hot here.

3) Shoreline. Michigan has more shoreline than any state but Alaska. You can hike for miles on unspoiled Great Lakes coast. Sure, we don't have many mountains, but you can fly out to them on vacation.

4) Lots of TTers. We are already getting the forms ready for your arrival. Once you get us the credit card number and a copy of your social security card, you're in! In fact, better hurry because the "Welcome Back" zucchini bread is already cooling in the oven.

Anyway, good luck on making the decision.

When it comes to hyperelitist extreme sportstes, RL forgets about the squad of lycra-clad trail runners that chugged past us on the Waterloo-Pinckney Trail, lol.

What part of the U.P. do you miss, Lefty? I'm a Marquette expatriate at the moment.

Oh, yeah, forget everything I said. Move to Montana.

But, really, isn't Houghton a bastion of high-tech? You'd be close to the ski runs at Mt. Bohemia and Porcupine Mountains. You could do weekend trips to Isle Royale. I'd be looking up there.

And, really, Sunshine needs some hiking partners.

Houghton/Hancock are getting some money (state or federal, I don't recall) for Michigan Tech Enterprise SmartZone's, which is supposed to bring in some technology to the area. Might want to read up about it.

Not thinking about Idaho is smart. The big HP facility and Micron and the smaller companies that support them aren’t hiring much. The backpacking is just no good. And all your neighbors would be toothless spud farmers. Wise to keep Idaho of that list.
