REI in Nashville

“Backpacker Magazine will be at REI in Nashville this coming Tuesday night at 7pm - some kind of free clinic or something.

Any TT'ers planning on being there?”

“I tried their "one free issue" deal. Read the mag, decided I didn't want it, so I never sent anything back to them. I got a couple of letters from them saying how if I didn't pay my subscription fee, I'd lose my subscription. Whoop-tee-doo, I thought. I was never subscribed in the first place.

Finally after a couple of months, I got a letter from a collection agency, threatening my credit rating if I didn't pay them what I owed.

So I went to the backpacker.com site, and wrote them a nasty little email stating the facts, that I had never entered into a contractual agreement with them for anything more than one magazine, and that I also had never received any other magazines from them, and that they had better call off their attack dogs or there would be hell to pay.

I got an email back from them apologizing for the incident, and I never heard from the collection agency again. Of course, it goes without saying that it'll be a cold day in hell before I subscribe to Backpacker.”

I had the same thing happen with another Magazine. I'll never do that free issue thing anymore.
I'm going to go to the thing at REI but I ain't about to subscribe. I'm not impressed with backpacker magazine either.”

“bitpusher - The same thing happened to me, except that I received two free copies and a free gift. But the first thing I received was their bill! I have never again looked at their publication.”

“my subcription was a gift....they never do trips that i'll probably ever do...they could do tons more gear reviews, reviewing 6 jackets, 1 tent and 1 stove a month...i mean come on. 2 paragraphs about backpacking areas in my location IF I"M LUCKY. When the gift runs out..i'll thumb through it in wal-mart”

“I just talked to REI and all you have to do is showup for this. The guy I talked to expected this to last about 1-1/2 hrs. I asked where they would hold this
"clinic" because there upstairs area is small and he said he wasn't sure. I bet there will be a large turnout.”

“Bitpusher the sad thing is that Backpacker ceased trying to collect the bogus charge only after you complained. What about the other thousands of consumers who didn't have the time or bother to contact them.

No doubt they're now trying to remove a bogus, derogatory entry on their credit report, or will suddenly find out about it when they're turned down for a loan in the future. At that point, they'll probably just pay the bogus charge so they can get their loan.

Backpacker intentionally put together that scam. Someone should notify the Federal Trade Commission.”

“Blew it off and went on home after YMCA, I'm so ashamed.”

“The clinic was geared more towards the beginner person. They basically went over a gear list and gave the basic schpiel about each item. It was a lot of good information, but if you are familiar with backpacking, a bunch of the information was not new. They also went over the basics of food planning and leave no trace. Overall I would say the info was good, but I was a little bored.”

“Things will be much more interesting at the Trail Talk Convention. How about it Matt? A TT Convention in conjuction with TownDawg's outdoor cooking extravaganza. There is still time to plan.”

I went last yr but I won't be able to go this yr but wanted to let the other people in this area know about it.

Last yr at this event is where I met my first TT'er and it was walkindude.”
