I need a NEW tent

“I was wondering if anyone had any recomendations on a 3 season or convertable tent. I have an old (98)Skyview 3 I'm getting rid of, its just to big for my needs.

I'm looking at the REI Half Dome 2(praised by backpacker), Kelty Vortex 2, and the North Face Nebula.

If anyone has any first, second or third hand knowledge I'd appreciate the feedback.

“I use the Kelty Jetstream2 convertable and love it. Got it at STP for $160. I think they have sold out of them though. Killer tent.”

“a friend of mine has this tent...nice. it is still roomy. but it has a full rain fly. Unless Kelty has changed the stakes, you will want to replace these with v or Y shaped. Its not an ultralight. I have TNF SlickRock and really like it, it is a 3 seasnon. I also have a MH Nightshade. 4 season convertable...solid as a rock!”

“For $100 you cant go wrong.Its a great ten I love mine it weights only 4 lbs and packs to 5x14.

You seam seal it and there is no leaks or anything.It has two doors and two good sized vestablules!

Its a great tent and I would recomend it to anyone!

we spent the night last october perched on the edge of a west virginia cliff with horizontal rain and gale force winds knocking down tree branches all around us.... the vortex came through it all with flying colors....very impressed with it!”

“I carried a llbean Light Stuff #2 which weighed about 5lbs on my ECT hike last year. Slept in it about 180 nights without any problems and enjoyed this tent. Lots of room easy to care for and no leaks. They also have a solo but I wanted the room since I was on the trail so long. Looking at a Eureka Mountain Pass 1xt for a winter thru-hike on the AT. This is a excellent 3/4 season tent with very little is any condensation problems. Good price at $120 and it has ample room and two vestibles. Lots of good tents out there but if your thru-hiking the AT you can get by with a tarp in the summer when the shelters are full. Good Luck”

“VAUDE Galaxy is a lot like the Kelty V-2 with the two doors and vestibulage.

There is a third pole across the top that give the vestibules more shoulder room.


They claim its a 4-season.
Its not extrememly light.

“The first night in my tent was about 14 degrees, and darn windy. I think that tent kept me as warm as anything else would have that night!”

“If'n ya got the money go for the Hilleberg Nallo 2 - it can easily be adjusted for Summer use.

If'n ya wanna do it on a budget, I'd second smiley girls suggestion. Sierra Designs Clip Flashlight 2. I am very happy with my SDCF3.”

“I agree with what pedxing said. The NAllo 2 is a tent and full fly, 4 season tent, that is hooked together so that your tent does not get wet because it is always under the fly as you set it up. It weighs 4 lb 10 oz total weight, not minimum weight. Roomy for one, big enough for two. The SD Clip is lighter I think, and many people rave about it, too.”

“I love my Stephenson's Warmlite, but its pricey. 2 lbs 13 oz, 4 season, 2 person but will fit 3 if needed. SnowDude and I slept in it for 30 days straight with our packs, and had plenty of room.”
