No Spring Break Trip Now!
First I had a cold with a lingering cough.

Then my older daughter got a cold that turned into a sinus infection. She got better, and then on Easter she developed Pneumonia.

Now my husband is sick, and going to the doctor today, which he never does, but it already is in his lungs.

So we are cancelling our tip to California for our nephew's christening. We were going to fly out on Friday, and spend the week on the coast around Big Sur and Pismo Beach.

I am bummed. But I am also concerned. This THING comes on quick. Reading on the internet, it seems to fit the description for viral pneaumonia. Does anyone know how contagious this is? My doctor said it wasn't very contagious, but I'm worried about the neighborhood kids who play with my younger daughter who so far is not sick.

I read that these viruses can be spread through droplets in less than 1 meter away and that they can survive on surfaces for up to 7 hours. Most common methods for transmission is breathing droplets or direct contact with an infected person so hand washing and avoiding sick people is probably the best thing to do. Hope everyone starts feeling better soon.

I had pneumonia in Oct '00.

First my little guy had it in one lung right about his 10th birthday ...10/3....
I got sick a couple of weeks later and finally saw the doctor on the 21st.

I can understand why people DIE from this.

It was like breathing through a wet sponge.

I have had asthma ever since which is much better than a year ago.
The good news is that the asthma is gone when I'm humpin' the mountains out in the Land of Good Air......West Virginia.
The bad news is that cats make me wheeze.....I don't like cats anyway....and the air in Baltimore is some of the worst in the U.S.

Splash, that's just awful! I'm so sorry that your family is having so much illness lately. I hope they get better soon and are able to avoid any more. I'm also sorry to hear that you had to cancel that trip. When I lived in California that was one of my favorite areas to visit. But I'm afraid that I could say that about several places along that stretch of coast. It's so beautiful!!!

I get pneumonia easily from breathing really cold air for extended periods. If this is something like that where the pneumonia develops as a secondary symptom of something else (in my case asthma) then it probably isn't contagious. Personally, I think it's wise to assume that it is contagious and take the necessary precautions.

Wash your hands. Hands are the principal disease vector for viruses. You catch salmonella from the salad not the chicken because you prepare the chicken, put it in the oven and make the salad. Salmonella dies while the chicken is still 'rare', but not on your hands. Teachers such as myself are always washing our hands.

That's interesting you say that Tom. I had asthma as a child and eventually I outgrew it. Then I got pneumonia really bad (coughing up bloodclots and all that) about eight years ago and after that, the asthma came back. I still have it tho it's pretty well controlled with steroids.

Whew, taking care of sick people is more work than backpacking. My knees hurt from climbing the stairs a zillion times.

My daughter was diagnosed with asthma this past fall. It sounds like it will be worse for a while after this pneumonia, from what you all tell me. I wish I could say that she is better tonight but she seems worse. I may take her to the hospital.

My husband was diagnosed with the flu, which I guess is better, in the scheme of things. He had a flu shot this fall, but I guess this one wasn't covered.

Thanks for your good wishes, all!

Tango313 is right...a few times when I feel a cold coming...I load up with vitamin C...they stop the cold dead in it's track.

A virus is a completely different story. Hope your family gets well soon Splash.

Well, my daughter got up from a nap last night and ate some dinner, watched TV and went back to bed at 10. This time she slept through the night, no coughing spells requiring medication in the middle of the night. Her breathing seemed better. No fever this morning yet. Hopefully we're turning the corner. Thanks for your prayers. About the vitamins, we do load up on the C and orange juice when someone in the house gets sick. We were doing pretty good until allergy season hit.

Splash:

What medication is your daughter taking? I developed asthma at the age of 32. I ran the Toronto marathon the following year and went back to playing rugby, which I'm still doing 20 years later.

Roseymonster:

Asthma can both go away and return - particularly with women it seems. Some women develop or lose asthma during or following pregnancy, for example.

Right now? Flonase, Claritin, Augmentin, Albuterol, Tylenol and Guaifenesin (and vitamins). Normally I only give her the Claritin, Flonase and Albuterol when her allergies are acting up, not on a daily, year-round basis.

Now I'm sick!
Man I hate being sick. I've been sick for over a week now and everytime I think it's getting better, it gets even worse. Now Sauron is starting to come down with it. Well, I guess it's good we're getting it over with before summer gets here. Summer colds are the worst. Apparently spring colds aren't a whole lot better!

I'm sorry that you all are sick. We are all finally healthy, and I hope that we stay that way! Scully I'm sure that you have been busy with all your wedding/moving plans. Try to get as much rest as possible. And tell Sauron to stop faking that cough so he can get out of packing (j/k).

I'm was down with Bronchitis, its better but I have had no voice for four weeks now, been to doctor three times, and going back Monday.
This is really bad because I am a Technical Instructor and can't lecture because of it. The second doctor made a comment that I could have done permanant injury to my vocal cords from trying to lecture when I should have been whispering.
Who knows this could mean Medical retirement and lots of free time to get out. Hummm a silver lining in every cloud.

Nowslimmer, I'm sorry to hear about your friend, please accept my condolences. But if he lived his life with friends like you then he must have been truly happy and what more can anyone ask for?

LyndyS, but what if it's me that's been faking to get out of the packing? Moowahahahahaha!!! J/K ; ) . I took a day of rest and did absolutely nothing but rest and now I feel much better. I think you and G00SE were right, too much working and not enough resting.

Hey it takes a neurotic to know one!

So how often do they let you post from inside the sanitarium? Did those shock treatments help you, thebackpacker? You probably wouldn't know ...and they probably wouldn't tell you either.
