Got reservations for 4 at cabin flats (#49, GSMNP) this Saturday (4/6/02). Also includes Fri at #50, and Sunday at IceWater. Can't guarantee I will see this email, but come on if anyone wants to hang out.

Friday -- park at Smokemont. 1.1 mile in to CS50. Saturday, get to NewFound Gap (start about 9am. Hike up to Charlies Bunion, eat lunch, overnight at CS 49. Hike out to Smokemont on Sunday.

If you know my truck (Dodge Dakota, TN plate), walk on over and let's hike together.

Dude, they got bear warnings out for that campsite. In fact, it's the only site they have warnings for. Have a good time!

Cabin Flats is closed for long periods frequently, because of bear activity.

TD, whip up a pot of gumbo, let it simmer for an hour or so and let us know how long it took you to troll in the bears.

If you don't show up on TT next week, we will assume it didn't take long.

TownDawg - Take some 15% pepper spray and let us know if it will stop a bear. Thanks.

We'll wait to hear, or not hear, from you.

yeah, and you can use the pepper spray as hot sauce in the gumbo. Dual duty stuff,,,cuts down on weight.

(not prowler, but on his puter -- this is TD.)

The hike was nice.. 65 during the day, only 28 or so at night. I was at Charlies Bunion yesterday.. hung out there for a few hours actually.. I had a good laugh listening to folks talk about how EASY the AT was..

(heh... they dayhiked from Newfound Gap to the Bunion -- and that was the only AT hiking they had done.)

I had never seen Cabin Flats.. it's an EASY walk (4mi)in from Smokemont.. but I walked in from Newfound Gap out to the Bunion, then down Dry Sluice. (9mi)

Here's what I was confused about. You are scheduled to be at IceWater tonight!

How many were you? 1, 2, 4 ?

How did you enjoy the overlook on the approach to Cabin Flats? They used to dam that area and the downstream contributaries. When there were enough logs in the water, they would blow the dam and in a timed sequence, they would dynamite the contributaries to keep the logs floating down and out.

One of daughters wants to spend several days there, to paint the entire view. (wide angle or a wide piece of canvas, I guess.)

How was the Dry Sluice Trail?

(TD, not prowler)
1) How was the Dry Sluice Trail?

-- Easy. Mostly runs along a dry creek bed.. with about 12 stream crossings as you get closer to Cabin Flats. Well marked, easy walking.

2) You are scheduled to be at IceWater tonight!

-- And your point is ?? *giggle*

3) How did you enjoy the overlook on the approach to Cabin Flats?

-- Oh my gosh.. it is like walking into a lost kingdom.. All of a sudden you got purple flowers, and it's practically like walking into a gated community.

4) One of daughters wants to spend several days there.

-- It is magickal. It is nearly a religious experience. Luved hanging out, talking to posers, and wanna-bes!

5) How many were you? 1, 2, 4 ?

-- Looks to see how schizophrenic he is today.

Buying a mountain cabin
Anyone ever do it? How much? Where can one find info on them?

I know prices will vary drastically depending on size and location. Just curious, though, as I'd like to get one within a few years up in the NH White Mountains region.
