Where can I get MREs

Just need to know where I can order some MREs for an upcoming youth outing. Church youth pastors came to me and ask if it would be possible to plan a weekend Survivor themed youth retreat. We are trying to make it as authentic as possible (except voting people off) short of killing them and are expecting about 30 teen contestants. Any advice would be great.

The church youth pastors are encouraging young people to watch the Survivor shows by theming a retreat based on them? My town's girl scout leadership want to base next year's encampment on the shows as well. Am I the only one who thinks there is something wrong here? Maybe the shows have more value than I had attributed to them.

Yeah, make a buncha kids compete for the food and shelter!

Teach them to work together as long as it benefits the individual, then shuck your pals when they are used up!

Trade allegences, jockey for advantage, etc.

And dress minimally too, especially the girls!

Isn't that what the show is about?

Splash I diffentely agree with you if these were children. However, these are esentially young adults between the ages of 17 and 19. Our focus is not to encourage any more TV watching, the Lord knows this generation doesn't need any more TV. Our goal encourage them to bond as a group and learn how to cooperate working towards goals. Yes there will also be devos and plenty of challenges to earn rewards. Several teens going have had a hard time really becoming a participants in any activities. How is this different than a church based boyscout activity? Please tell me if you think its a bad idea. I hope I haven't started a firestorm.

Imho there is so many rules in place for this retreat that it is basically becoming a weekend camp out with fun games. They will have to make their own fire though.

Trailhound, I think that you just explained the value of your retreat, in that it sounds like it will an improved Survivor event, rather than glorifying the show as it exists on TV. I don't have any experience with today's teens, so I won't even go there.

I will let everyone here in on a little secret. Survivor isn't about anything! They picked a bunch of people and put them in a situation that they could basically sit around and do nothing for 30 days (on the first one they even supplied the water, the contestants would just have to walk to get it). As for allegences and backstabing, that wasn't the show! Some of the people did unethical things, and some people applauded them for it. Every situation you are in you make a difference and it's up to you to decide what kind of difference you are going to make. I think Survivor could be a great learning tool for kids, with the basic question being "What is your integrity worth?".

I was just funnin'.

The teen retreat sounds like a fun thing.
They can "pretend" to be survivors and get to know the meaning of B.O.!

Teens can be a hoot on a group camping adventure.

My family's annual(and anal too!) beach camping week at Assateague Island is coming up in August.
Whooppee!
Now its no more diapers and everyone can swim!
More time to relax and drink beer!

The more I think of it, 30 contestants between the ages of 17 and 19, on a retreat? They would be sorta like grownups, eh? I was thinking of younger teens, when I first posted my question, sorry Trailhound57.

Seems that every Army/Navy surplus store around here advertised MRE's. You might check stores in your area.

Sounds like a blast! I offered to take my former class of 7-8 graders on a bp trip. One asked "what will we do out there?" another said " can I bring a TV?" . It never happened.

They don't taste bad, it's the after effects
I always carry an emergency MRE in my first aid kit. Packed with calories, don't go bad, if you get lost/run out of food you're glad you have it!

But eating em on a regular basis? Woooh, worse than jerky!

LOL
That is like asking which tooth I would rather get yanked out. They all suck.

Actually you eat the same meals day in and day out on deployment to the point they are all equally as bad. But when you first try them is the only time to determine what isn't as bad as the other. Personally I like the Franks with Western Beans.

Trailhound,
There is an outfitter in Cullman that had quite a few of the MRE's the last time I was in there. I can't remember the name but I think it is just a mile or two off exit 308.

be cheap like me
if you want MREs, just get the entrees, they're a lot cheaper. All the other stuff that comes in an MRE (crackers, jelly, salt, pepper, drink mix, cookies) you can buy at any grocery store and its just as good.

beware
the Chicken Ala King... unless you enjoy catfood. I think that was the worst one, on top of that it came with cheeselikespread for the cracker. I always loved the peanut butter, that cracker was kinda good... wish you could buy crackers like that in the market!

Every try the one minute cracker challenge? You have to eat the entire crakker package in one minute without drinking anything. I've never seen anyone make it.
