Moving to NH...or VTView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 36 of 36 messages posted.
Moving “I'll be moving to New Hampshire or Vermont in the very near future. My wife has accepted a position with Dartmouth Medical School starting in late April. We had been looking to move closer to the mountains for awhile. My job skills as a network architect should transfer easily and I've begun the hunt. We've been up in NH and VT a couple of times in the last two weeks house hunting. We'll live somewhere close to Hanover. I will stick around here until I find a job up there or the house sells, whichever comes first. Wish me luck! If anyone has any helpful advice about the area or possible positions, please e-mail me. Now, if I can find a position making a great salary by working 3-4 days from home, 1-2 days at client sites with powder days off in the winter, I'd be set.” 3:22:08 PM 4/04/02 “hmmmm. Ski -- My wife's stepsister has just returned to the area. Her husband is coach of one of Dartmouth's teams. They live in . . .Plain something Plainfield, I think. He had been an assistant coach a number of years ago and they lived in Quichy (sp?). They moved for a coaching opportunity in Ohio. They love the area, and like being back in New England and so jumped at the chance to take over the team when it came up. I also have a friend whose parents have a place on Lake Fairlee. Beautiful area. My son puked at a diner up there. What is a network architect?? I started thinking that maybe it isn't building houses . . .but maybe computer related????? I have a client whose son is a computer jockey up there somewhere.” 3:32:37 PM 4/04/02 Hmmmm... “Send me an email, I may or may not be able to help you. I work for a software developer of medical applications used in clinics / physician offices, there are always things happening. We're VERY rapid growth right now, can't find enough good people. My counterpart in New England is a good guy, well connected, may be able to help out. I'm guessing you know technology, and through osmosis, a little about medicine. Is your wife a doc?” 3:40:13 PM 4/04/02 “A network architect does systems design....computer geek stuff. Quechee is in VT near Woodstock and close to Dartmouth. Plainfield is south of Hanover and also close by. Wanderer, thanks. Sent you e-mail.” 8:18:13 PM 4/04/02 “Skiracer, You'll love it up there. You can't sling a dead cat without hitting a ski slope. Good luck finding work and selling your house!” 8:35:10 PM 4/04/02 “Kewl place to live Ski. Dartmouth Medical School is a pretty nice place... I was an adjunct for a few years (technically still am, but never show my face). If I were living in the area, I would want quick access to either I-89 or I-91. I guess it depends on what kind of area you might want to retreat towards. There are some wonderful places not far away from Hanover where you can get a nice house and some land pretty cheap.” 8:52:08 AM 4/05/02 “Where are those cheap places, ped? We haven't found them just yet. We'd like to be within a 25 minute commute to Dartmouth. We are also looking at fairly easy access to I-89 or I-91.” 8:58:53 AM 4/05/02 “I bet ya just about creamed yer jeans when ya heard you'd be going somewhere where there is mountains and powder! Good luck and congrats Ski!” 9:04:39 AM 4/05/02 “Whether NH or VT, both are great places to live from what I've heard. Congrats and best of luck!” 9:15:09 AM 4/05/02 “wow, i'm jealous!! VT and NH seem like great places to live. Tarpie and i want to eventually move up there, but the jobs we'd want seem pretty scarce, compared to DC. i've visited a ton of job finders online, and when i put in the keyword "editor," i usually get back a big fat zilch. i knew i should've gone to cooking school!! oh well, maybe i'd find something outdoorsy to do, that would be awesome... anyway, i wish you the best! and keep the details coming about the move...” 9:51:53 AM 4/05/02 “Thanks everyone. It looks like the next few months will be pretty busy for me. I should be settled in up there by mid-summer. I can hardly wait for next ski season.” 4:30:21 PM 4/06/02 wow, Ski!! “How perfect is that!!! Best of luck. :o)” 8:54:40 AM 4/07/02 “I partial to Vermont. I lived in Tunbridge, but we were on the Randolph side off the mountain. My commute to Lebanon, NH was 33 miles and lovely but dangerous in the winter. White River Junction, Vt is where I89 crosses the river....White River meets Connecticut River. Its a BIG small town just across the river from all ugly shopping(tax-free) centers in West Lebanon, NH. The towns up the White River are nice and small and, hey, they are in Vermont.....a state WITHOUT billboards!!!!! Sharon, Vt is nice as is Royalton, Vt, a little further up. There are nice swimming holes on the White just south of Exit 3(North Royalton) and further up river near Gaysville(along Rt 107 just past Locust Creek west of Bethel) Ooooo, Locust Creek, which doesn't look like much, has a way cool hole under an old concrete(1927) bridge on a dirt road. This one is a real "jumper's hole". You can hop off the bridge 20+ feet into cold creek water that is 12 feet deep. The Gaysville/White River holes, just west of there, are 15-20 feet deep. There are rocks with jumps of up to 24 feet and the water is cool and clear. Don't get me started on Vermont! Last summer I took the two younger boys, 11 & 15, on another car camping/swimmin' hole tour up there in July. We picked up some of the local kids we know and leaped and swam until we were BLUE!” 1:04:06 PM 4/07/02 “Tom, you sound like you have been a WAY COOL Dad to your kids.” 1:18:26 PM 4/07/02 “Why, thank you, Splashy! Oh boy, we did some splashin'! Shucks, the kids are just an excuse for me to do road trips, camping, leaping into rivers, snokelling in lakes, farting in tents, etc.” 1:25:18 PM 4/07/02 “Oh, and look for Vermont Governor Howard Dean as a potential candidate for President of the U.S.” 1:34:28 PM 4/07/02 “tom terrific, i don't think your swimming holes can match the ones i go to along rock run in PA, 22 feet deep and fed by waterfalls. 57 degrees in the middle of summer.” 6:51:24 AM 4/10/02 “Well, Pa is half the distance from home for me. Got photos?” 6:56:55 AM 4/10/02 “Update on the move: We sold our house in NC and I'll be moving up there on the 31st of July right after closing. We've also found a house in NH. It's in Eastman right near Enfield and Grantham. We do not close on the house in NH until 9/30. We have a small rental house in Hanover until then. My last day of work in NC will be 7/26. I have not found a position in NH, but I'm confident I'll find something once I get up there. If I don't find something right away. I'll spend the time studying for more networking related certifications. I can hardly wait to be up there. Three months is *way* to long to be away from your spouse.” 8:14:28 PM 7/22/02 “come back and visit, dude!” 8:15:57 PM 7/22/02 “actually, screw that! i'm inviting myself up to visit you in NH!” 8:18:19 PM 7/22/02 “Hey Ski. Mebbe we can do some hiking in the Whites sometime. BTW: The best bulleting board sites for New England backpacking are: http://appalachia.outdoors.org/bbs/index.cfm http://www.viewsfromthetop.com/ (ooops I see I missed your question back at me in April... sorry Ski)” 11:50:55 PM 7/22/02 “Dude, you are living right by the Long Trail. You have to become a member of the Green Mountain Club. Good luck with the move, and have fun on the Long Trail! BTW - The Long Trail Brewing Company rocks!” 5:18:48 AM 7/23/02 “Rad- you're welcome anytime. pedxing and Buddha Bear- thanks for the info.” 5:35:07 AM 7/23/02 “Good mornin' ski, and best of luck to ya! I wanna do a Long Trail thru-hike sometime, don't know if'n I wanna do all of it, or the section of non-AT. It won't be next year tho, I'm doing what I missed this year, a thru of the Tahoe Rim Trail. You'll know when I get up that way.” 5:49:29 AM 7/23/02 Oh yeah! “How's that knee doing??” 5:50:36 AM 7/23/02 “Naked Ape- My knee has always been fine. It was shoulder and elbow surgery last summer. Both are great and back to normal. I'll make sure I change my e-mail address here when I get the new one in NH.” 11:11:17 AM 7/23/02 “Married life did in your shoulder and elbow? Best wishes on the move and job hunt, Ski! I'll be envious of your car plates!” 11:23:32 AM 7/23/02 “Hey Ski-man!! Good Luck on the move to NH. If I ever make it back east, I'll let you know. I'm sure the job situation will improve once you are living in the area, especially with your extensive background in systems and software. Happy Trails!! Tex” 3:23:10 PM 7/23/02 'Tard below. “Oh yeah, I knew that, I'll blame that on the lack of z's. Glad to hear they've healed up.” 4:28:50 AM 7/24/02 “It's my last day on the job this Friday, 7/26. It seems a little strange to be leaving, although I am leaving on excellent terms. My new adventure begins in just a few short days. Now...back to packing up the house.” 8:43:27 PM 7/25/02 “good luck ski. it is a beautiful area you are heading to. hope i can get up there to hike with you sometime.” 9:00:13 PM 7/25/02 Wow...Taking The House Too “Now...back to packing up the house." skiracer 08:43:27 PM 07/25/02 How'd you find a box big enough???” 9:06:07 PM 7/25/02 “Lots of smaller boxes, Buddur. I arrived in Hanover on Thursday 8/1 after a pretty uneventful trip with a 26' U-Haul. I was worried about the transmission the whole time. It really "clunked" when starting to accelerate and upon slowing down. The front tire seemed out-of-round or extremely unbalanced and the brake lights stayed on unless I lifted the pedal back up with my foot. I will never rent another truck from U-Haul unless it is absolutely the last place to rent. It was a "new" truck with 50,000 miles on it. Everything is now unloaded into storage for a couple of months until we close on our new house. I got to see it today. The house is nice, but the property is gorgeous. It is almost 5 acres of woods. The drive into the development is like driving into a park. I think I'm going to like it there.” 10:32:25 PM 8/03/02 “Sounds nice. Hardwood forests? If so, that should be beautiful in the fall.” 12:25:01 AM 8/04/02 “Yes, Pathman...lots of hardwoods.” 7:33:38 PM 8/04/02
