Education
I have a colleague who wants her son to finish high school in Central Florida and then pursue his studies in Computer Science at university here in Quebec, Canada. Does anyone know anything about this? I know that Pisgahforest went from North Carolina to Macdonald College here (where is PF, anyway?). I would like to konw something about the system in Florida.

For example, here in Quebec there are six years of elementary school and five years of high school (11 in all). After high school everyone must attend a junior college, either a three year programme for technical fields such as nursing and X-ray thechnician, or a two year pre-university programme. This is identical to the English system of six grades, five forms and the 6th form college, except that here the technical college is part of the 6th form college. Then university is a three year programme except for Medecine, Architecture and Education which are four year programmes. Thus, a normal B.A. would take seventeen years of schooling. How does it work down there?

I don't know about other states, but here in CA it is like this (at least this was my experience):

Elementary School: Grades K-6
Jr High: 7-8
High School: 9-12

BS/BA: 4 years (Could be first 2 yrs at JC then transfer to Univ. level)
MS: 2 years beyond BS

Most US states now have what amounts to a 13-year public schooling system, starting 5yrolds in Kindergarten, then through 6 years of elementary school, 2 years at a middle school, then 4 years in high school. After this, if you've taken the right courses and done well, you're considered ready for the university.

Some kids choose vocational or technical school during their high school years, and they learn a trade. Others take the college prep direction and go on to the uni. Nobody is required to take any schooling after the 12th grade.
Many choose to go to a technical or trade school after high school, and still others go to a community college where they can earn a two-year A.A. or A.S. degree. Most go on to a four-year school and apply their CC credits to a four-year degree.

The usual track upon entering the university or college is to go for four years. But many programs require an extra year or two to complete. But by and large, you still end up spending 17 years in school.
