Boss's who Don't understand Backpacking

“When you ask for time off, do you always say you're going backpacking?”

“No, as long as I'm using vacation time and my work is up to date, it's none of their friggin' business what I do on my time off.”

“My boss understands that my backpacking and snowboarding is like his baseball games. Our business manager is a skier and dayhiker (asking advice about hiking Whitney this year). The other person in my office is a skier/snowboarder. I'm not sure about the new guy in my office. My business manager from last year was a biker and ocean fisherman. My guys are great! They just ask that I come back in one piece.”

“"What!!! sleep out in the cold, you must be nuts". But when I bring the pictures in to show them, they just go gaga on the scenery...I tell them, get out more...(get it...GOM...LOL). I don;t ask for days off, I go weekends and vacations...holidays. Cant mess up work...my company pays for all my fun and gear, it even pays my mortage and car payments. So, when I need time off, I use what I have available.”

My boss might have a life, I don't know. The only time he ever misses work is when his kids are sick, he takes them to Disneyland (once a year) or he has a major plumbing problem--at least these are the only excuses I have heard. Wouldn't that be weird if he had a secret life as a trail hog! Ya, ya, that extra 50 pounds around his waste is his coverup. Ya, he really teaches for NOLLS

“Like Stikmon, I do weekends and holidays. Then once a year I take 3-4 weeks off. I'll take a Monday off every few months.”

“All my bosses always thought I was nuts for wanting to spend a week in a wilderness by myself in the mountains. The great thing about it is they understood cell phones are useless in those areas so I was "unavailalbe for contact". You see, it was common practice, actually expected, to check voice mail and email while on vacation. I worked at a company that rhymes with Hell.

When I became a manager, I expected my employees to take all their vacation each year and I instructed(demanded) them not to think about work or make any contact with me or anyone else through vmx or email while on vacation. Many people feel like the world will fall apart without them at work and think they must make some connection with work while away. That way they're able to rationalize their value to the company. I strongly discouraged it and most of my employees honored my wishes.”

For the folks who report to me - heck, I'm Gen X, thus more concerned with results rather than inputs and process and I also value the importance of a life outside of work.”

“I get lots of looks and commments on fridays. It is not uncommon for me to work a 1/2 day if i'm headed out. Some people I work with brag about how much time they have " in the bank". One guy has 10 months sick time and 8 or so months vacation time. I think its crazy. I get 15 vac days and 2 personnal days. They get used in a hurry, I will periodically take a sick day too. I will continue on this path until I am directly told to stop.”

“I asked for 10 days off last summer to go hike a section of the PCT which only amounted to about 5 shifts and 5 regular days off. My boss kept referring to my time of as "going camping" she had no concept of backpacking. It was so frustrating!”

“My boss says, "Do whatever you want on your days off...just get back here in 100% efficiency". Meaning no dragging your tired old busted body around. And no hangover or doped up brain.”

“I am the boss. I've had 1 fun day off in 14 years. I have no sympathy for slackers! Our sick day policy is a note from the coronor with 2 weeks advanced notice. God I sound like Bacpak.

We close from July 4th to the 24th so we do our trips then.

The one fun day off I did go backpackin and the other 2 were surgery and helped deliver my daughter.”

“The best thing about my job is that my entire chain of command backpacks. We take two trips a year as management retreats (4 days each). As long as the work is done and there is no backlog, nobody sweats taking a Friday afternoon off every now and then. It is one of the perks that will keep me dedicated I suppose.”

“My boss is at new baseball stadium in San Francisco today, and my business manager is skiing this week!

I'm alone in the office and the phones aren't even ringing!”

“My office "gets" backpacking now, but last time I took off was during one of our busy times. My boss wanted me to leave a number where I could be reached, I told him 1-800-IM-IN-THE-WOODS.”

“I don't care if they understand it or not. I get 10 days of vacay annually and very single one of those days gets used. I also get 15 sick days a year. Those have accrued and now I have about 60 sick days available. I've been taking "ill" with more regularity lately. I'll also work some of the big "outdoor" holdiays like Memorial Day and Labor Day so that I can take the day later when the crowds will be significantly diminished. My boss is a workaholic. She sometimes will give her vacay days to employees so that we can balance the books. That's her choice. I have a life, a fun life, outside of this office. I work to live not live to work.”

“I've offered to use up those accrued hours from others that can't seem to use it. Our policy is use it or lose it. I don't see how they can accrue 350+ hrs. After Montanapalooza and the Winds in July, I'll come back to 1.5 hrs.”

“Well, I've had my problems in the past, but I've never allowed my job to interfere with backpacking. I tell my "boss" before I'm hired that I backpack, and my work only serves to allow me to backpack. They will get 100% from me, but in the top ten of life, they do not even show up; that is, until my latest job. I work full-time in 3 days.(12 hour graveyard shifts) taking care of mentally ill adults. I have 4 days off a week, full benefits, and job security. You dont make much in this field, but the rewards are priceless; as well as the work schedule. Before this job I had butted many a head with those who presume to exercise "power" over me. I would "inform" any possible employer that I will require at least 30 days unpaid a year, and they would receive at least 2 months notice of those days off. This would work out fine, at first, but eventually someone would take issue with it. You see, most people have lost the ability to feel passionate about something; therefore, your passions only serve to remind them of thier own insignificant lives, and how empty they are. Dont let anyone ever stop you from getting out. My lady had a problem with it once; now she's expressing her problems to some other guy. I backpack and that's never going to change so long as I'm able to shoulder a pack. Grow some nuts, or ovaries, and realize this life is yours. You can always get another job; and don't bother giving me the "I got bills", or "I got kids" crap. Those are just excuses used by people that have already sold themselves down the river.”

I guess its due to the fact I get cranky if I dont get out in the woods often enough..
