“Al Qaeda reward for Western soldiers, dead or alive

BAGRAM, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Al Qaeda and Taliban supporters were circulating leaflets in eastern Afghanistan provinces offering huge rewards for capturing or killing Western soldiers, U.S. military officials said Friday.

The fliers offer $50,000 for a dead soldier and $100,000 for one who is still alive.

There is a book in my library:
Once There Was A War
John Steinbeck
pub. 1958
LC # D745.2.S745

Steinbeck did a stint as a war correspondent and this book is full of letters, minus censored parts, about his travels with the troops.

In one part he is describing a place in North Africa.
He can't say where because of censorship.
I think it is Morrocco.

The troops are preparing for an amphibious invasion, possibly Tunisia.

He describes the place as, "reeking of urine from thousands of years of habitation and the urination that goes with habitation in an environment of sand and damn little precipitation....."
.....or something to that effect.

I can't help but think of "The (un)Holy Land" in light of this description of life in that part of the world.”

“OMAHA, Nebraska (CNN) -- Authorities detonated a pipe bomb early Sunday outside a home in Seward, the sixth such explosive device discovered in a Nebraska mailbox, the Nebraska State Patrol said.

The other five pipe bombs were found Saturday in rural areas of the state, said Terri Teuber, a state patrol spokeswoman.

All the devices were "rendered safe," Teuber said, with some detonated by authorities and others disassembled. No one was injured.

The findings are the latest in a string of pipe bombs planted inside mailboxes across Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois. Six people -- four postal employees and two elderly residents -- were wounded Friday when six similar devices exploded in mailboxes in Iowa and Illinois. Two other devices also were discovered but were rendered safe by authorities.

Federal authorities said the incidents amounted to "domestic terrorism."

(CNN) -- Lucas John Helder describes himself as a musician, partygoer and online conversationalist on his rock band's Web site. But the federal government is painting a different picture of the 21-year-old college student.

Helder is accused of planting pipe bombs that injured an Iowa woman and destroyed a mailbox. He is suspected of placing explosive devices that injured six people from Illinois to Texas over a five-day period.

It's all a little hard to believe say people who know Helder.

"This is the farthest thing I could see him doing," said Matt Decorsey, a former roommate who talked with him a few weeks ago. "He was, like I said, a really nice kid. I just don't see him being violent like this."

As I said people, this kid was the average All-America boy. If he is whacked, then so is every damed one of them. Which is my point about guns. He had guns in his possession, and every gun owner is whacko. Sane people do not have guns. Guns attract whackos.”
