Congrads gremlin!

I just got some very good news myself.

My backpacking nephew that a few of y'all met at Mountain Mama's, 'Turtle', just got his ACT scores back.
He scored a 29, good enought to get him an automatic full ride scholarship to the local community college.
His mom and dad are of limited means, so this is really big. His first two years of college are paid for!

Have you heard of the Bookstore Basketball tournament at Univ Notre Dame? It involves somm 600 teams from folks affiliated with the school, including varsity athletes to the cafeteria staff, and all sorts in between. There's some restriction on how many varsity athletes can be on a team, and there can't be any basketball varsity (although, with this year's N.D. teams, the quality of the varsity athlete may be down a tad).

Anyway, my son's team made it to the Final Four, and were leading the team with ex-N.D. quarterback Carlyle Holoday on it at halftime, only to let the game slip away in the second half. My son got into a little scuffle with Holliday after the big tough jock threw a ball at my boy's back, but cooler heads prevailed; my son said Holliday "would have killed me."

But hey, they made the semi-finals. Am I proud??? And all the boys on my son's team are coming back next year!

My wife called me on my cell while I was in heavy traffic on my way to work. “Hi - are you driving?”

“Yes.”

“The school called – there’s a problem with ***”.

She paused long enough for about a jillion emergency scenarios to race through my mind.

“She made honor roll.”

#&%!$!

She’s really applied herself this year (high school freshman) and her counselor wants her to take all honors courses next year. She wants to only take honors science for the first half of the year and see how it goes before possibly going into all honors classes. I’m especially pleased that she likes science so much. There are far too few women in the sciences.

I’m so proud!

violin,

Congratulations to your daughter.

Please do some checking before she makes that decision. I'm sure it may be different there but, my daughter was in the same position going into last year. She opted for the honors science only for the same reason and it would have actually beeen easier if she was in the honors math too. It may not be the same there but in her class the honors science used formulas and procedures that were not taught in the college level math and she (we) were left to learn it on her own. It all worked out fine and she is still on the honor roll but it was a struggle that didn't have to be.

Gemini, congratulations to you too.

First year of college a success
Talked to my daughter this afternoon. Her grades are in -- 2 A's and 2 A-'s for the second semester at U-Mich's Honors Program, putting her somewhere around a 3.8 for overall GPA. The transition to big time academics seems to be going very smoothly. She'll have junior standing in the fall -- only two more years to go, YAHOO!

I mentionned this on another thread. I drove 8 hours and 450 miles to see my daughter's prize winning short film. Her team won Cdn 1 500 $ and an invitation to Cinéfest (Canada's 4th largest) and they're submitting to Sundance.

Then we went out for a fancy dinner and got drunk to-gether. When we got back, her boyfriend (a geologist and a really great guy) was there and so we cracked open another bottle of wine and talked. They told me yesterday morning that I was really well behaved (thank Gawd).

Just wwanted to share.

On the same day that my oldest daughter received her commendations for being Youth of the Year in our town (commendations from Senator, Representative, state senator, state rep, mayor, Chamber of Commerce, county supervisor, and the head dogcatcher), she got another scholarship in the mail ($1500) and went to her prom. (This is the girl who even though she's 5' 7" is the leading basketball rebounder in the county for the second year in a row.) Big day for her!!!

My son went to E3 last month in Ca. He Im'ed me today to tell me to look at www.Forbes.com then click on SonyPSP vs Nintendo DS. When I did there was his picture taken at the Nintendo Booth. He said Forbes contacted him to get his permission to use his picture on their website.

cool Ewker.

my turn now.

My son (6th grade) completely blew off school back in Feb and March. He brought home some really dismal grades that period. So, being grounded with no x-box, tv or much else, he worked really hard, applied himself and basically removed his head from betwixt his buttcheeks. Last grading period he proved that he can do it when he simply decides too.

For the year he posted a 3.5 grade avg (4.0) scale. Thats with a couple of Fs, Ds and Cs in the mix from his blow off semester too.

Roam...I can imagine. Mine is more scared of dad then of me. Not sure why, because I am the one that will have a fit, and take pretty much everything he owns.

I sure hope this will change, he did realize for the first time that he really hurt my feelings. bought him a book about getting ready for college. I'll make him read it, then write an essay, and tell me about it. LOL Punish his a$$.

after he's back in school he will also do at least 2 hours of homework. I don't care if he has any or not. He will work 2 hours. Midaswell do his homework then right??

Told him he will have to earn my trust again. Hmm...hope I am doing the right right think here.

anyway...altogether, I have some great kids. :) I luv them to death.

I made destructo do all the homework and classwork he had blown off and go over it with me. He had to ask the teachers if they would accept it late and apologize for not doing it the first time. Most said "sorry kid" a couple accepted the late work and gave partial credit.

He then had to show me his homework every night and if he had none, he did problems or read each night anyway.

Similar approach.

The kids have gotta learn that school is important and you/me/we gotta find a way to make it important to them, to get them to view it as important too!

thats the trick.
