mucho congrads!!

this is not really bragging but it made me smile.
The thing with children are, one min you want to disown them, then the next min you want to hug the poopies out of them.

I woke my little guy up for school this morning, and he woke up to give me the sweetest biggest smile. I then went to wake up twignut, who is so sick :( but with a cold and all she did give me a big smile and a hug (thanks for the germs honey)

but it made me very thankful for being a parent. I went to work with a HUG smile and it is because of my children.

A collage is a painting or picture with multiple other pictures. Think of a medley in music. One song made up of multiple other songs.

You said "collage" when you meant to say "college". Thus the reference to torn/term papers...

I hope my kids get off to college, but it twont be for their GPA's i am afraid. One will go for her "collages" and the other for physical prowess(and I didn't say for skills in lighting a campfire ie: Ithaca car camping trip)

My son finally got off the bench and had 19 pts in his last basketball game. This included 2 dunks, one 3 pt shot and 5 blocks

had "the drug talk" with my kid last night. Damn, that's really hard. You got to make sure they are not affraid to come to you, but you also need to make sure they are smart enough not to take drugs.

anyway, he told me that he got asked to take drugs by his friend in TN. That was the reason why he stopped going there.

After I asked him why he didn't come to me about it, his answer was:" Because I know how to say No. Parents think kids are not smart enough to do the right thing, but we actually are smart enough."

I am proud of the little #&%!$head!! Hope he keeps it up. That's something that really worries me.

I did tell him that even if he made the mistake of taking drugs, he can always come to me and I help him as much as possible. And I hope he'll be doing the right thing.

Well...in much more words I guess. I hope that was the right "talk". It's so hard.
I can't say that my kid would never do it. That's just not reality. You never know if they will. Actually I think all kids will try it at one point (all but my sister LOL).

Good for him. He's what, 13 or 14? I don't think I was approached for the first time til I was 17 or so. It's a lot easier to say no with that extra few years of age. I'm thankful that I can say I never tried anything stronger than bad Evan Williams whiskey.

Way to go Gem! Sounds like a smart little bugger. I never got approached. My mother or father never said a word to me about sex drugs or rock n' roll.

Now look at me! A karaoke junkie!

No one ever offered me drugs until I was in college. People were smoking pot and doing meth around me (Yes, meth in the 80's! I come from a messed up place) I woulda said no anyhow. I've always hated that feeling of being out of my own control.

Gem, you've got a cool kid.

What a coincidence. BowlderSon's school sponsored a speaker last night on drug education. Fascinating. The guy was a terrific speaker, and gave us a ton of great info. His approach was to initially explain the science of why drugs make people feel good; i.e., what the chemical processes are that go on in one's brain. Then, when he went into the decision-making process kids have to go through, it all made sense!

He suggested starting to talk to kids about drugs (and alcohol) at about age 12. Studies show that a huge percentage of people "experiment" with drugs and/or alcohol during their teen years, but the vast majority don't end up with addictions. But the best way to avoid that kind of problem is to delay that experimentation until the oldest age possible. His opinion is that the way to do that is to get the kids interested in life - develop interests, friends, etc. - that makes the drug highs relatively less attractive.

He handed out a pamphlet about talking with kids about drugs/alcohol that is published by the feds. He said that he disagrees with a lot of the material put out by the government, but he understands their position: they have to come across with a completely clear message. The problem he has with that is that drug and alcohol use issues are very very complex, and you can't really be very effective when you describe a situation as so black and white, right and wrong, etc.

Good point BM. My parents wouldn't have minded if I drank a beer with friends at our house while in hs. I think that took the mystery away. As a result, I probably didn't drink more than a dozen beers the whole time I was in hs(not at home). I really didn't do much in college either, but I suspect working to pay my way through college and the wonders of an engineering curriculum had more to do with it.

I had a friend growing up whose parents let him drink all he wanted starting at the age of 10. He took one sip and spit it out. Has never had a another sip since.

They should have made him try pot too cause that is all he does now.

hey, he was 12 when he got approached for the first time. bad part, we lived in a higher class neighbor hood during that time. Shows you that you can't really judge anyone.

Yes, I really def. think you'll have to talk to your kids about this all the time. Dosnt' matter if they roll their eyes. At least the know you care.

It's hard though. I can't tell him, well when I was young...I've tried it...and...blablabla...

I am not gonna do that. ( i did think bout it though)

LMAO @ WK
Hey...my parents NEVER talked to me about this stuff either. BUT we talked about sex, drugs, and #&%!$ in class. It was part of our education.

They talk about drugs in school, but I think it would be a great idea to have some ex drugy speaking. I think it's always better to hear from a person that experienced it.
