“Tonite my daughter tested for her gold belt in Tae Kwon Do. She's been taking classes since January and really enjoys it. Anyway, she did so well she was "double promoted" and received her purple belt. Moments like that make parenting all smiles.”

Actually, I have two daughters. One of them is an absolute angel...the other one will put me into a mental institution soon.

Gotta love them!”

I tell her I have no grey hairs, just brown and white.

'A few of those white ones belong to me, don't they?'

Anyway, if you read the 'What would you do?' thread, you'll know it was a long and rocky road.

I was going to drive up to Sudbury, northern Ontario for her 23rd birthday on June 24, but she asked me to pick her up in Ottawa, Thursday, July 1 (Canada Day). I asked her what her plans were for the week-end and she said she just wanted to spend time at home.

'Where the He!! is that?' I wondered, 'In the village with old friends, I guess.'

It turned out that 'home' is my (our?) place.

I get a little misty about that.

She just finished second year in film at Laurentian University in Sudbury and won two prizes for a short art film that they are submitting to Sundance. She also won a scholarship that will pay next year's tuition.

We went to the jazz festival in Montreal and to her favourite Chinese restaurant. I got her a 25th jazz festival anniversary T-shirt and other stuff and we hung around my hamlet of Rockburn and ate out every night. We also went to the Rockburn Country Music Festival and had a few laughs.

Right now I'm in the public library in Ithaca, New York. It's a lovely, old city and I'm walking off a hang-over that I'll blame on Pennsy, Capn Bobo and Lumberzac.

To-night I'm cooking caribou at the cook-off. I hope it turns out all right, but I don't really care.

Life can be good. I'll post a trip report soon.”

“I'm reporting here, too. Laurel, a month shy of 2, can swim like a fish now. She paddles around, is learning to float on her back, and now likes to jump off the side into Daddy's arms. "I take BIG JUMP!" Nothing can beat that smile!”

“I just got back from a week long trip with my two little ones. Mom did not want to go to Wisconsin so it was all me. It was absolutly great to spend that kind of time with my 3 and 4 year old. Everything we did was brand new to them and thier eyes would widen and shine every time. This was the first lake experience and first swimming experience after swim class ended. They loved the water and could stay a float. They would continue to swim even when thier teeth would be chattering and covered with goosebumps. If any Dad gets an opportunity to spend 24/7 alone with there kids away from phones, work, buisness, I recommend it. I forgot my watch and loved it. Time flew and I got to play for a whole week. I taught them how to play "kicked the can". Great kids, great time.”

“It rained every day that week. He got a bath every day when he got home. One day, his socks were so muddy, my wife threw them away instead of trying to wash them.”

“I didn't say there was anything wrong with getting muddy or imply he doesn't bathe. I just think it's funny how he got so much on his belly. Was he body surfing in the mud?”

“lol, yes, I think he was. The boy never met a mud puddle he didn't want to bring home with him.

The bath reference was just to further illuminate how muddy he got everyday!”

“Got a great voicemail from my 3.5 year old today. She informed me that she got her green belt in Tae Kwon Do today. The instructor used her as the demostrator for the new students (classes begin at age two) and she died so well the instructor informed Sass that she'd be promoted. Big Grin!”

“Nickname? That was my grandmother's nickname, short for Sasparilla. I guess she used to drink a lot of it!”
