The "Bragging on my Kids" thread

“I'm sure those of you with children have plenty of proud moments, and I feel like bragging about mine, so I decided to start a thread just for bragging about our kids.

My son Ian called me after his track meet on Thursday to tell me there is a new "family record" in the two-mile. My best was 10:32, and he had just run a 10:25!

Then Friday, my daughter Rebekah who is in 7th grade ran in her first ever track meet. She is on the middle-school 7th and 8th grade track team. I had been told that she ran a 71-second 400 meters in practice but I really didn't believe it.

So in the meet, she first ran the mile, and finished in first place! Then she ran the 400 meters and again finished first, in 72 seconds. Then she ran on the "4 x 400" relay team which finished first.

We try hard in our family to communicate that it is far more important to be a good person and treat others well than it is to be smart; and that it is far more important to be good in academics than to be good in sports. But still...I do feel proud when they do well in sports.

(By the way, they are all "good people" and do very well in school.)”

When my son made Eagle Scout, I was more excited than he was. My daughter is graduating from college in 10 weeks...that will be a great time also.”

“good for you, dude. As for Ian, I'm 16 and can't run a 10:25 after to seasons of track, and your daughter 71 400, dang, thats only 10 seconds behind me. I think you have given birth to the next Tawanda Hawkens. Congrats”

“I have a 16 year old son that just took the All American Math Exam at school. There are approx. 2,000 students at the High School he attends. out of those 2,000 kids that took the exam Josh had the highest score in the school!
I was very proud!!!”

Now to brag on mine. He is 17 and is a member of the Business Professionals of America. They had a state wide contest in Tenn. and he took first place in PC Servicing and Troubleshooting (hardware & software). Now it is on to the Nationals in Chicago. I sure hope there is some scholarship money available for him if he does well.”

“Two college students and one applying. One high schooler with a 3.5 and looking at some serious art scholarships. One of the college kids is studying in England right now.
One grandson who will probably blow Einstein out of the water.

“My boy is soooo smart, he knows to wake me up when it is feeding time (aprox 7 am), he knows when I am going outside so he waits by the door to go for a stroll in the yard. If he sees me put a jacket on he goes by the door to go outside, and he knows all the sounds of food being cook, encluding the refirgerater door being opened. When he doesn't want to play he puts his paw on your face to tell you to leave him alone, and if you persiste then he will bite, but atlest you get a warning. I'm so proud of my male cat, Beano. And his little sister Rose, isn't to bright but she has a cuite face, so what more could you ask from a baby girl kitty.

“pekka, I don't know if they've changed the scoring from when I took it 20 years ago, but then, a 35 was a sure ticket somewhere. Here in Alabama, a 32 got you 4 years tuition to any state school.”

“That is great Pekka! I'm sure some scholarship money will pan out. Does she have a high GPA as well? That is important as well.”

“As for Newergirl, she told me she loved me a few days ago for the first time on her own. Usually I have to prompt her to say it, but a few days ago she said it on her own. I put her to bed and I was about to leave the room and she said, "Un You." This is her version of "Love You." I almost cried. It makes all the work worth it when she rewards me w/ shows of affection.”

“newgirl: Yeah, great grades, too -- last report card (she's a junior) the lowest was A-. She's only had a couple B+ in the past 3 years. Top first-year chem student in her school and region. Plus she's already in some advanced placement classes. I think with the weighting of points for AP classes, her grade average might even be above 4.0. Her AP history uses a college text. Senior year will be all advanced placement. Her German teacher is already prepping her to test out of the first couple levels of college German.

If she lived with me instead of up in the U.P., she could go to UW-Madison for about half the price of Michigan based on their in-state tuition rates. UW is a deal for Wisconsinites if you can get in (and she's got the stats to do so). She's still shopping around (and probably/hopefully will get some interest/offers once her ACT score gets noticed), but my wife, a Wolverine alum, is pretty smug about sticking with the interest in UM.

But the best thing is that she's a really great kid.”

“Congratulations Pekka, you must be thrilled! And of course (and obviously) so proud. And you should be!”

“I thought it was 35. But I could be wrong. I know that the different sections had different maxes. Sounds like they've changed the scoring quite a bit.

pekka, here's something you need to be careful about: I took the ACT when I was a Junior, and scored high, so I never bothered to take it again. This basically meant that I got NO counseling my senior year on what to do. I could have brushed up on my English, taken the test again, and scored a couple of points higher over all, which would have gotten me better scholarship offers. But I didn't know anything about how to apply for scholarships, and neither did my mom, so I got one scholarship, which I didn't end up taking because I was working at a job which picked up 75% of my tuition.
But if I had had a better scholarship, I might have worked part-time instead of full-time, and finished up school earlier, instead of in the 12 years it took me. So be sure that your daughter finds out about and applies for all the scholarships she can.

“My 21-year-old son just got out of the Army after a lovely trip to Mazar-E-Sharif. He was there when they had the prison uprising where the CIA operative was killed. I am so thankful he made it back in one piece!! I'm glad I didn't have any idea where he was at the time!”

“bitpusher..only like 1% of pple increase their score on the ACT..unless when you took it you totally didn't know how to do parts. I wizzed through it and skipped most of the math section cause i was rebelling against school and the 'rents..and made a
27 both times”

“OPIE, in my case I scored significantly lower in one section (English) than the others, and by brushing up on that section I feel like I might have scored higher overall. Plus, if I had taken the test my senior year as well, I might have gotten more notice from the counselors at school, instead of being completely ignored.”

bitpusher, I know what you mean. Because I was a good student (National Merit finalist etc.) I actually got less counseling than others. The assumption was that I would be just fine, apparently. I, too, missed out on certain college scholarship/financial incentive opportunities that only became apparent afterwards. So I'll be keeping an eye on my daughter's advising. She is a real stickler for info, though, and we talk a lot about it.

P.S. bitpusher, I, too, took awhile to finish up...I completed my last incomplete for my B.A. 11 years after I started college, and at my third school. Sort of the smorgasbord approach to undergrad, with a late dessert.”

“My real mistake was not going to school at all for long stretches of time. When I finally buckled down and started taking courses regularly, it only took me 6 years from that point to finish.”

“The best I can say is that the local photo studio used the portrait my wife had done of our water spaniel as a display sample. A handsome (if neurotic) dog.

But Hikin Mike, your girls are sweeties to cherish. Those photos will melt your heart all over again when you look at them years from now.”

“My oldest son wanted his van to sound "cooler" so he bought a cherry bomb type muffler. When I came home, he was splicing it into the tailpipe of his van, after the stock muffler.”
