Trekkin' PolesView Messages“If anyone is interested in purchasing some trekking poles ... REI has the Leki Makalu Antishock 3 Trekking Poles on sale for $75.99 reg. price is $109.95. I have been wanting some Leki poles for a while now...and this is a great price for these poles! Mine should be here next week!!!” 12:49:33 AM 4/07/02 “Not interested unless they double as a firearm.” 11:04:41 AM 4/07/02 “I'm afraid that's the more expensive model....you'll have to shell out a bit more cash if you want the firearm option.” 11:21:52 AM 4/07/02 “I'd pay top dollar for a reliable, durable, safe, and accurate trekking pole rifle or shotgun.” 1:41:17 PM 4/07/02 “Mutt, pick up the army tech manual "unconvential warfare technices and devices" . It may offer some help.” 7:34:08 PM 4/07/02 “I have the Leki Makalu Tour Ant-shock poles and they are great!!! Don't go backpacking without them. 8)” 9:04:30 PM 4/07/02 “My only problem with the "Leki Makalu Tour Anti-shock trekking poles" is the length of the name; makes your fingers hurt just typing it.” 10:12:40 AM 4/08/02 “LOL how about "Leki Makalu Pro Cor-Tech anti-shock trekking poles" I think they should just shorten the name to "Da sh|t"” 10:15:40 AM 4/08/02 “Didn't Leki Makalu play for the Trail Blaizers?” 11:10:26 AM 4/08/02 Trail damage “Trekking poles dig up the trail, loosening it for erosion.” 9:42:01 PM 4/08/02 “Like your boots don't ? Georgie are you one of those flat landers? There isn't much dirt in the Sierras above 10,000 ' more rock , gravel and sand than dirt.” 10:38:55 PM 4/08/02 “Flatlanders? Yeah, we have dirt in West Virginia, but it sure as hell ain't flat. And you won't find any of those "gravel sidewalks" there.” 7:18:39 AM 4/09/02 Trekking Poles? “I'd rather go trekking with Norskis.” 1:45:54 PM 4/09/02 “Georgie is an idiot.” 3:03:07 PM 4/09/02 “Poles are a must!!!! 8)” 3:57:01 PM 4/09/02 Tom “Are you George Dubya??? :) I was trying to engage Dubya and you responded....did you forget to login as dubya? PS... I live on flat ground and play in the high country!” 5:25:09 PM 4/09/02 “My new poles are great 8)” 6:38:42 PM 4/09/02 Cool Mike! “I can't wait to hear the roar of the brown truck coming up the street to deliver mine!” 6:43:13 PM 4/09/02 “WW: Boots are like sorta necessary, eh? Trekking poles...not. Boots don't have sharp spikes to dig, eh?” 8:55:37 PM 4/10/02 “Ya right!!!!!!Try going at a 45 deg angle in snow or mud for 5 to 10 miles you would wish you had them then!!!!! Unless you like falling. 8)” 8:56:45 PM 4/10/02 George “I thought an LNT, ultralight packer like yourself would go bare footed. Less impact eh?” 10:15:25 PM 4/10/02 They are here! :) “Can't wait to tear up the trails with these babies!” 7:21:58 PM 4/11/02 “I've never used poles, but wouldn't mind giving them a try. I sometimes pick up a sturdy stick, and it definetly helps, especially with the steep parts. I know a lot of you guys swear by them, I'll have to give them a try.” 8:38:28 PM 4/11/02 “People poles rock!!!!! 8)” 9:52:29 PM 4/11/02 “ditto that poles, I mean. I have no idea about trekking poles” 9:56:57 PM 4/11/02 Artex “I use to think they looked really dumb and why would anyone use those things...but I tried them and liked them! They are great for the ups, downs and stream crossings but I find myself just swinging them and playing on the flats... they are just not that useful on the flats.” 10:00:15 PM 4/11/02 “Cool, thanks Wind Walker. Something to consider, for sure. Everybody here talking about them got me wondering, then when I was talking in length with some forest rangers in the Catskills who were using them and really recommended them, it really got me thinking. After I get my upcoming move out of the way, I'll reevaluate my finances and see how much is in the bank and buy a cheaper pair just to try them out. Any suggestions?” 10:39:04 PM 4/11/02 “That was for you Biz! 8) and I feel that poles help me alot while backpacking. It also adds to the workout on the body. 8)” 10:43:11 PM 4/11/02 Artex “I picked up a cheap pair at a one day only sale at REI-outlet for $29.95 used them for a year and gave them to my son and Picked up these Lekis for $75.99. I did run across these earlier this evening... Masters Trekking Poles for $40 ” 11:19:09 PM 4/11/02 Just ordered my first pair “Couldn't find the thread, but somebody posted a deal that the Sierra Trading Post was having on trekking poles about a month ago, and the sale was still on so I just ordered mine. Got a pair of Komperdell basic on-off antishocks on sale for $39.96 (regular price apparently $119.95). I had been thinking about getting a pair for a while, and got to thinking last weekend how on steep climbs I normally pick up a stick and use that, but poles would be more effective and lighter. And for 40 bucks, hey, not a bad deal. I look forward to getting them in the mail and trying them out. Thanks for everyone's previous advice!” 6:49:50 AM 5/29/02 komperdells “artex, i was looking at that same pair....just can't quite make up my mind.... when you get yours, let us know how they look and feel....” 7:55:49 AM 5/29/02 “Will do. Pretty sweet deal for only 40 bucks! :-) Should get them in about a week, week and a half.” 7:59:28 AM 5/29/02 “maybe i should just go ahead and buy them.... it's tough being a tightwad!!” 8:11:50 AM 5/29/02 “I got the 49 dollar pair. Cork handles..on/off anti shock. the handles fit great in my hands..i have small hands. Got a tad sweaty, but not real bad. The straps were comfortable, but started to irrate when i'd drop the poles or take them on/off alot. The tips don't flex 30deg like the leki's. This could be a prob in the future. I had one pole bend slightly from being wedged in between 2 rocks and i kept walking before i noticed. It bend back with steady force, and doesn't look kinked or metal fatigue. The points grip great on rock also. They aren't heavy either. and be ready for an arm workout if you've never used both arms to hike with.” 8:15:01 AM 5/29/02 “I'm with you gonzo. Tough being a tightwad. I dunno about the cork handles, but I love my poles. I usually only use one now, but they're great to have on a rocky or rough trail. Plus it gives your hand something to do.” 8:20:14 AM 5/29/02 “I just ordered some!! WooHoo!! My wife says I have more money than brains.” 8:38:15 AM 5/29/02 “Here's to having more money than brains! After the Aurora incident, I'm pretty sure my wife thinks the same thing...” 8:44:59 AM 5/29/02 “I got the Black Diamond poles from campmor for $35. Used them for the first time the weekend before last on a 8 mile hike up a constant grade gaining 2000 ft. I'm sold on them. Wont hike again without.” 8:48:19 AM 5/29/02 “Artex, These poles you you are lookin at are good poles. I just got mine last week and used them Sun. on a 16 mile day hike. They were $49 but have been reduced $10 bucks. Heck, I called them and they credited me the $10. They will make a little noise, and you can't tell a big difference with the anti-shock, but the seem very well made. Great deal for these poles. My old tt name was keith. Opie, these are the same ones you got.” 9:00:15 AM 5/29/02 “Keith always seemed to be a level headed TT poster. Hope the new name doesn't go to your head. LOL” 9:05:43 AM 5/29/02 “was that a "DUDE" shot? I think I'm gonna get some GArfum.” 9:28:21 AM 5/29/02 “Distance Dude, Opie - thanks guys, yeah, I'm very happy with the purchase and look forward to recieving them. Glad to hear some good things about them, and also glad I didn't have to pay too much.. 40 bucks is a pretty sweet price! I plan on testing them out on a dayhike at a nearby steep climb, Breakneck Ridge (gotta love that name), once I get them.” 9:45:47 AM 5/29/02 “I have always carried a wooden walking stick and now that I have a tarp I know that it would be advantageous to use trekking poles to pitch it (variable height, more packable, pointy end for sand). Now I just need to get over my father (more the forest dweller than me) calling them "yuppie sticks".” 5:16:54 AM 5/30/02 “Just got the Komperdell's from Sierra TP. They look and feel good. I'm gonna use them this weekend on a mountainous hike and I'll let ya'll know what I think of them. I've never used trekking poles before, only a single walking stick. These things are gonna be great next Fall and Winter when I pitch my tarp.” 5:39:18 AM 6/06/02 “Totally ditto what you said MDSHiker. Just got my Komperdell's in the mail the other day from Sierra. I've also never used anything more than a birch branch. I'm going to take mine out on Sunday for a dayhike to test them out.” 6:23:44 AM 6/06/02 “Glad to hear ya like em. Play around with the hight for best feel. I'm 6'1 and got mine set at 110 cm. top and bottom. I also found it best not to overtighten the shafts when you get them adjusted. After some miles they will be hard to loosen. Mine did'nt slip at all. If the shaft around the collar gets dirty you might want to wipe it down before movin it again. This was my first pair to. No regrets here, they help me alot.” 3:21:56 PM 6/06/02 “mine never slipped..and did get kinda tight..spent the first few miles watching where i placed the poles instead of around me...make sure they aren't lodged before pulling forward also” 4:47:27 PM 6/06/02 “Just took my new Komperdells out on a dayhike. It was my first time using trekking poles, and I could feel the difference they made. Ascents and descents were much easier, it was nice to utilize my upper body strength more. Since I usually only bring a fanny pack with me on dayhikes, I don't think I'll use both poles again, but will definitly bring one along with me if its a steeper trail. But it's obvious to me the difference using a pair will make when I do a multiday trip with a heavy pack. For $40 (on sale at Sierra Trading Post), very good deal!” 1:57:50 PM 6/09/02 Glad you like 'em Artex! “I have been using them for a little over a year now. I have heard people make comments about Horse Packers poking fun at them for using trekking poles. On my last trip we ran across a couple of horse folks and the wanted to know if we were expecting snow and where did we leave our skis and stuff like that. I took it with a grin and said "sometimes four legs are better than two" My nephew Eddie( 14 ) was more upset than I ...after we were down the trail a bit he said ..." If they got their lazy butts off the horses and had to climb this trail on foot...they would see how useful these poles are" It was Eddie's 3rd backpacking trip Already a believer!!! :)” 2:55:00 PM 6/09/02 How Many Poles Does It Take To Go Hiking? 4:53:32 PM 6/09/02
