Rad was right, they have paved the island.
we took the 9:00 a.m. ferry to the island. hit the trail about 11:00 a.m. after orientation and registration. hiked about 12 miles (a little more then necessary) to brickhill bluff and set camp around 4:00 p.m. we dayhiked the north end on the second day and stayed at brickhill bluff again. watched electrical storms beat the mainland on this evening but we didn't get anything on the island. hiked to plum orchard on the third day, toured the mansion then hiked on to stafford beach camp. stayed the night at stafford beach, hiked the coast back to sea camp and took the 10:15 ferry back to st. marys. wildlife seen:

armadillos
horses
pigs
green snake
aligators
crabs
starfish
dolphins
deer
many different birds
bugs

I'm glad you guys were able to get on. Cumberland is a gem.

BTW- That little church was the one JFK Jr. got married in.

What church? Those pics looked like a fall hike in the Appalachians, not flat subtropical Cumberland Island.

they even have fire ants steve hiker
you must have looked at the wrong album steve hiker. they are listed on the left side of the page. the link should take you to the cumberland island pics though. if not just click on the cumberland island album on the left.

thanks folks, we are glad we got to go also. and it is only an hour from my father-in-laws. we will be going back, i'm sure.

My oversight baume. So there are fire ants on Cumberland Island. Bastads! They are spawns of Satan.

No Fire Ants on CI. They only live in Louisana.

How can I look at the pictures? All I see is thumbnails, and even with glasses I can't see the photos.

just double click on the first one. it opens a viewer with arrows to go to the next photo.

They are not opening to a bigger picture. I thought it was just my computer. Seems they don't work for SN either.

do you have a spam blocker or pop-up stopper on?
it opens to another window, so you may need to turn your spam blocker thingy off if you are using one.

It actually opened the first time I clicked on a picture. After that it quit.
I'm wanting to see the aligator pictures. I recon I'll need to go back again and hopefully see them. I also want to hike from the fartherest point south to the fartherest point north.

Love that place. When we honeymooned there it had lots of Wild turkeys and plenty of water moccasins up north. I'm glad to hear Plum Orchard is open, they were working on it then, hard to find the $ to do upkeep on a 20,000 s.f. house in that climate.
Nice pics, worked fine for me.

no no no.

you must have taken a wrong turn. that looks like fort clinch. you would have been miserable on cumberland, with all of the ticks, mosquitoes and fire ants. it's pure hell.
