“Walkindude - I've lived in the NY Metro area now for about 5 years, and thought the same before moving here. While people here are more cautious and don't say hi on the streets, it's different when you're out. If a girl looks at you and smiles when you're at a bar, there's no guessing it's a signal to say hi. However, because it is New York, one also has to be careful and make sure who was smiling at you actually is indeed a girl! :-)”

When I was backpacking this weekend I took the group out on a night hike to patton cave.There were a couple of tents near the cave and rather then acting crazy and silly I had told everyone in the group to be very quite.Of course this is not the normal me but becuase I like to pratice trail courtesy I make it a point to behave when out at night around others camp sites.

“Crazy Mike that's my biggest issue with taking Scouts out on the trail. Teaching them to keep quiet. I tell the guys that everyone else is not out hiking so they can hear you make noise.”

“Ya its always good to be nice and quite while backpacking but hey sometimes I get laugh att's and I can't stop.But when it comes to be around other people sleeping at there camp then you have to be quite!

“I think I have met every kind on the trail. I met one family that was really friendly. They were out day hiking and really interested in backpacking. I was having lunch and they were really nice. I ended up almost unpacking my whole pack showing the kids the water pump, stove, etc. They were car camping a few miles away and invited me to come eat BBQ with them.
I also met a guy and his kids that got mad at me. They were about 100 yards from Clingman's dome parking lot on the AT. I was coming up the trail. Seems the guy though I should holler out every once in a while so he would know it's not a bear. I started laughing but quickly found out he was serious, the guy was really mad.
I have only passed a few people that did not at least say Hi. I usually stop and speak. If they stop I will usually talk for a few minutes.”

“the flatlander - I almost always make some noise, when approaching others or being approached, in order to keep the others from being startled suddenly. However, anywhere near Clingman's Dome is so populated that no alerting noise is needed.”

“I never thought of making noise so other people wouldn't be surprised to see me. If I'm coming up an incline though, they can usually tell I'm coming from the huffing and puffing.

I remember once, I was doing a training hike in the state park near here, with my full kit on. I'm coming up an incline, huffing and puffing, and as I reach the plateau, I see a woman running towards me on another trail that's used a lot my runners. She got one look at me, turned around and ran the other way.

I wondered if she really was afraid that I would shed 40 lbs of gear and run after her like a sex-crazed maniac.”

“I've ran into all kinds while backpacking, mostly all good. Men always try to give advice even when it's not asked for. That usually rubs me the wrong way. If I need help I'll ask for it!”

“I ran into this woman with the triple mommy gene once. She kept insisting we drink some of her water, that the trailhead was a long way off and that we should stop and rest.

I wonder if her own children ran off on her?”

“I agree, the remote areas are great for courtesy, commonly, yes, out in the middle of the wilderness a nice face once in a while is great, my small town isn't exactly wilderness, but the people seem friendly enough, and urban areas are terrible... i was in the city, chevy chase md, and did myself a little test by waving at people as they drove by in the car... only one person waved back of about 20... what's up with people nowdays?? damnit”

A long time ago, while my father was driving, I was sitting in the passenger seat wiping the steam off the side window (old crappy car). We passed about 4 cars, and the drivers waved back at me...finally my sis told me to quit it...everybodys waving at us. But than, we're in Montreal, Canada...that might explain everything.”
