trail courtesyView Messages“my dislike for humanity lessens on the trail, so i always try to at least say hi, as compared to the mall where it grows by the second.” 1:03:30 PM 4/09/02 “Yeah, jmitch, you almost get to where you like people after awhile.” 1:12:56 PM 4/09/02 “I have found that the more remote the area, the worse the people smell.” 1:34:24 PM 4/09/02 “Has anybody been offered pork jerky on the trail?” 1:38:25 PM 4/09/02 “Pork jerky, like soilant green, is people!” 2:36:08 PM 4/09/02 “Thanks Chief...I forgot what sunglasses were really for. ;o) Fanny pouches are great too...hang it in front of your tummy and it has 2 uses.” 3:19:18 PM 4/09/02 “I don’t think most women understand why men can get so excited from just looking at a women. I don’t. But like many women I do understand that they do and can use it as one of the “man control techniques”. It is amazing what you can get a man to do with just the right “look”. Men can be such suckers.” 3:40:32 PM 4/09/02 “I always talk to people on the trail. 8)” 3:54:22 PM 4/09/02 “I think it is cool to get along with everyone out on the trail. Whenever I see other hikers I always talk to them and the same for backpackers. Its just like when you are at work or in the city I like to be nice to everyone that I pass by. 8)” 5:23:02 PM 4/09/02 “Mtn Gal, it's called the "Urge to Merge". BTW, post a photo of youself with the "right" look....the guys here will decide if they'll carry your pack for you. ;O)” 2:26:25 AM 4/10/02 “Backpacking girls=Fun! 8)” 5:41:40 AM 4/10/02 “I haven't ever seen anyone curtsey on the trail.” 7:16:49 AM 4/10/02 ooohhhhh! “ ”7:29:05 AM 4/10/02 “"Backpacking girls=Fun! 8)" its crazy mike 05:41:40 AM 04/10/02 7:33:24 AM 4/10/02 “stop playing around! get to work, NOW!” 7:40:31 AM 4/10/02 “It looks like lyra left a trace” 7:50:40 AM 4/10/02 why you... “it's a tomato! as in splat!” 7:53:10 AM 4/10/02 Mtn Gal “The guy was prolly pissed cause y'all were the discourteous ones - trail etiquette mandates that uphillers yield to downhillers... What's the big friggin' deal? Some people escape to the backcountry in search of solitude, and not speaking to passersby is part of their routine. No biggy... I will usually make eye contact and nod. If I sense that the other person wants to converes, then I will converse.” 8:31:53 AM 4/10/02 “One of these days you idiots will figure out that mtn gal is a man posting as a woman. Sheesh, just check out that Adam's apple.” 8:34:59 AM 4/10/02 “I'll wait and see what the other person does. If they say Hi, then so will I. I've been on the end of a "Hi" fest while walking a popular loop walk in reverse. I just about went mad! I'll tell you what I find awkward and that is when you catch up to a slow walking hiker and you have to pass them. Some take it as a personal insult. Mind you a Leki Super Makalu up the clacker soon gets them out of the way!” 8:35:18 AM 4/10/02 "clacker"? “LOL!” 8:38:43 AM 4/10/02 “Gojo – he had moved to the side of the trail before we got to where he stood. It is polite to let the weaker sex pass. Wait who said my sex was weak and how would anybody but my hubby know. Where is the blabber mouth. I show him who’s sex is weak. Kleent is a women posting as a man. His squirrel is a cat dressed as a squirrel.” 8:58:43 AM 4/10/02 “testing... look out below... ” 9:11:01 AM 4/10/02 “... just a leftover from The Great Internet Waterballoon Fight of '97.” 9:13:05 AM 4/10/02 “Ya I know Girls=Fun But Backpacking Girls are the best!!!!! 8)” 6:05:37 PM 4/10/02 “Best at humping?” 2:09:28 PM 4/13/02 NY people “I still don't understand how people from NY City ever meet and get laid when they don't even say hi. After all, they think people are dangerous psychos.” 6:04:52 AM 4/15/02 “Walkindude - I've lived in the NY Metro area now for about 5 years, and thought the same before moving here. While people here are more cautious and don't say hi on the streets, it's different when you're out. If a girl looks at you and smiles when you're at a bar, there's no guessing it's a signal to say hi. However, because it is New York, one also has to be careful and make sure who was smiling at you actually is indeed a girl! :-)” 6:14:56 AM 4/15/02 Being quite. “I bet. When I was backpacking this weekend I took the group out on a night hike to patton cave. There were a couple of tents near the cave and rather then acting crazy and silly I had told everyone in the group to be very quite.Of course this is not the normal me but becuase I like to pratice trail courtesy I make it a point to behave when out at night around others camp sites. 8)” 6:20:53 AM 4/15/02 “Crazy Mike that's my biggest issue with taking Scouts out on the trail. Teaching them to keep quiet. I tell the guys that everyone else is not out hiking so they can hear you make noise.” 6:45:07 AM 4/15/02 “Ya its always good to be nice and quite while backpacking but hey sometimes I get laugh att's and I can't stop. But when it comes to be around other people sleeping at there camp then you have to be quite! 8)” 5:10:39 PM 4/15/02 “I think I have met every kind on the trail. I met one family that was really friendly. They were out day hiking and really interested in backpacking. I was having lunch and they were really nice. I ended up almost unpacking my whole pack showing the kids the water pump, stove, etc. They were car camping a few miles away and invited me to come eat BBQ with them. I also met a guy and his kids that got mad at me. They were about 100 yards from Clingman's dome parking lot on the AT. I was coming up the trail. Seems the guy though I should holler out every once in a while so he would know it's not a bear. I started laughing but quickly found out he was serious, the guy was really mad. I have only passed a few people that did not at least say Hi. I usually stop and speak. If they stop I will usually talk for a few minutes.” 8:47:42 AM 4/16/02 “the flatlander - I almost always make some noise, when approaching others or being approached, in order to keep the others from being startled suddenly. However, anywhere near Clingman's Dome is so populated that no alerting noise is needed.” 9:38:03 AM 4/16/02 “I never thought of making noise so other people wouldn't be surprised to see me. If I'm coming up an incline though, they can usually tell I'm coming from the huffing and puffing. I remember once, I was doing a training hike in the state park near here, with my full kit on. I'm coming up an incline, huffing and puffing, and as I reach the plateau, I see a woman running towards me on another trail that's used a lot my runners. She got one look at me, turned around and ran the other way. I wondered if she really was afraid that I would shed 40 lbs of gear and run after her like a sex-crazed maniac.” 9:52:30 AM 4/16/02 “"I wondered if she really was afraid that I would shed 40 lbs of gear and run after her like a sex-crazed maniac." bitpusher - Be happy to give you a comment on that after I see your picture posted on Phil's Photo Page. LOL” 10:10:51 AM 4/16/02 “lol...I'm still waiting for a picture that's decent enough to send to Phil... Maybe now I should send him one with me looking like a wild man...” 10:20:09 AM 4/16/02 bitpusher? “ ![]() 10:34:16 AM 4/16/02 “Well, I wish I was ripped like that, but I could do without the pointed monkey-head...” 11:00:23 AM 4/16/02 “My Dad hates it when I talk to him when we're backpacking. Oh, you meant strangers?? weird” 11:13:19 AM 4/16/02 “Introvert: why doesn't that damn extrovert shut up? Extrovert: why doesn't that damn introvert ever say anything?” 11:16:24 AM 4/16/02 “Uh, that thing with the monkey-head has no crank. Ashcroft would still not approve.” 11:19:22 AM 4/16/02 “LMFAO Violin! 8)” 11:38:23 AM 4/16/02 “I've ran into all kinds while backpacking, mostly all good. Men always try to give advice even when it's not asked for. That usually rubs me the wrong way. If I need help I'll ask for it!” 11:52:10 AM 4/16/02 “I ran into this woman with the triple mommy gene once. She kept insisting we drink some of her water, that the trailhead was a long way off and that we should stop and rest. I wonder if her own children ran off on her?” 12:08:21 PM 4/16/02 “They probably stranded her out there biz.” 12:10:52 PM 4/16/02 “I agree, the remote areas are great for courtesy, commonly, yes, out in the middle of the wilderness a nice face once in a while is great, my small town isn't exactly wilderness, but the people seem friendly enough, and urban areas are terrible... i was in the city, chevy chase md, and did myself a little test by waving at people as they drove by in the car... only one person waved back of about 20... what's up with people nowdays?? damnit” 12:54:07 PM 4/16/02 “How many fingers did they wave back?” 1:19:28 PM 4/16/02 “Bitpusher, were you upwind or downwind of her. :o) A long time ago, while my father was driving, I was sitting in the passenger seat wiping the steam off the side window (old crappy car). We passed about 4 cars, and the drivers waved back at me...finally my sis told me to quit it...everybodys waving at us. But than, we're in Montreal, Canada...that might explain everything.” 2:34:12 AM 4/17/02 “The Triple mommy gene???? 8)” 5:46:06 AM 4/17/02
