The last weekend in September is still the date? Sure hope it cools off by then!

Hey Mo, what are ya doing that weekend? Jgeils? Stalker? Last time our BNR area hike was in conflict with the Sipsey - let's not let that happen again - 'kay?

The date has not been set in stone yet. Several people had said the last weekend in Sept would be the best. I thought we could leave from the picnic area friday and do a bluff shelter with a mortor rock, 2 turkey foot falls, possibly a rainbow, cross country to fall creek falls, camp off trail near the marker tree, Saturday maybe do salt peter wells, big tree, back up to clifty creek canyon to camp then Sunday down borden creek back to pinic area. If any one would like a longer trip I can provide shuttle to Thompson creek bridge and they can hike down to Picnic area to meet us Friday.

Just a thought.

Bama - you da man!
Uh, you are a guy, right? *grin*

This sounds like a great trip in the making..now, just have to figure out how far the drive is across LA?

Where can I get a map of this Sipsey place? I'll reimburse someone, or please provide a number to call to order if that's possible. Thanks!

I'm all over this trip like white on rice.

Late Sept. in AL is usually a warm 70-80F during the day and a little cool at night.

Sounds like good weather to me.

TxWoodswoman, I can mail you a map if you wish 'cause I have an extra. Just e-mail me if you want the map.

Anyone can e-mail me for a map or directions "wjeffp2000@aol.com" One thing about Sipsey the trip I have in mind includes a river crossing. Normally ankle deep that time of year, but all of the rain that falls south of high town path drains into the Sipsey, so the water levels can rise rapidly. We will have to be flexible and see what the weather will do. Anyone good at long range weather forecast?

September is too early to do Sipsey for me. Furthest south I'll hike in September is Nantahala or other higher elevations showing early touches of fall.

Sipsey is good for November through spring.

Last of sept. ain't to bad hot for Sipsey. Sipsey is mostly coves and canyons. There are a lot of microclimates there with plants growing that are no where else in the world. I was there this past weekend. Temps were in the 90's, It wasn't all that bad down in the canyons. If November will be better for more people I'm fine with that. As it gets closer we can take a poll and see when will be best.

How does Sept 27, 28, and 29th sound. If any one wants to start sooner I'll provide shuttle. If anyone is thinking of maybe bringing their kids, It won't be deathmarch. Those of you that have hiked with me know that I like to take it easy and enjoy everthing.
So bring the kids ifin Ya wannta. For those that like to hike 15 - 20 miles a day you can do it twice. Naw I'll have alternate routes for you.

I can't sleep right now because I'm so excited about my Bahama's trip on Wednesday. I'm packing right now because I'm leaving tomorrow to go to Opie's and then we are leaving early Wednesday morning.

But yes, usually I am always up late.

I'm also from Alabama.. I'm used to 100 degree weather with 100% humidity! One of the many sucky things about the south.

You got that right ... why I'm looking forward to the day I can go to Colorado.

Elevation 6000 ft+, cool crisp nights cut off from city lights, low humidity, aspens ablaze in fiery orange and yellow in the day.

Make the Deep South look like a scummy sewer -- I hope.

Enjoy the Bahamas, let the surf carry your body along as a stick of driftwood.

Is the date set? Last weekend in September?

I have to juggle the schedule with the kids on the weekend, but if this is a firm date, I will begin making plans.

I will be there.

If this is going to be the last weekend in September then put G00SE, Sauron and I in as definite maybes. This time of year G00SE never really knows whether he will get the time off until the week before.

I wish I could go on this one. It sounds like BAMA really knows the nooks and crannies of the area. I have been about 6 times, but only know about the "typical" stuff.

On the bright side my wife and I are taking our first trip together. We're going to the Standing Indian area around Franklin, NC.

Dayhiker maybe we can hook up sometime. I'll show you some of the more interesting parts of the forest. I grew up here and have been there numberous times. I still find something differant each time out. Once you learn the landmarks you can go cross country and find much more. The best places are off the beaten path. I seldom use the trails anymore, but a word of caution. All of the hollows look a lot alike if you are easy to get turned around. North of sipsey and south of hightown path water runs strait to sipsey, Borden or Thompson. On the south side of sipsey some of the streams are only about 200 yards from sipsey and run a long way around before going back into sipsey.

BAMA - I would love that. I have experimented going off trail. My first jaunt was to try and tie White Oak Hollow to West Bee Branch. It looks like a natural on the map. I got out there and lo and behold there's a trail the whole way. I have bushwhacked up West Bee Branch and then climbed out and hiked to the head of East Bee. That was a nice trip. I would like to explore Quinlan Ck area and others.

I grew up over in Hamilton, which must be close to you. I never even knew Sipsey was there until 10 years later when I started hiking.

TT has made the army surplus store and pizza hut a MUST stop after most/all savage gulf trips. I'm wondering if there is a real good local resturant or backwoods stripclub that we can incorporate with the trading post as a sipsey MUST stop afterwards...err a stripjoint in that area?...nevermind
