Dayhiker there is a shoot at a waterfall on quillian creek that you may be referring to. There is also one below the falls at kinlock. There are numberous bluff shelters and mortor stones in that area.

As far as the elusive 100' underground waterfall. If someone showed you all of the greatest places in the world you would be deprived of the joy in finding them.

This sounds like this is becoming the mysterious Sipsey hike of ECT fame.

Do I dare join in and seek the elusive sights?

Naw, the sept trip will be a "normal" hike. Looks like the last weekend is still the best op. We will be seeing all the normal stuff people see plus a little extra. The best stuff does not have trails to them. I guess thats what makes them elusive. Everbody come and join us for that one. It ain't supposed to be no more than ten in a group. But we can have multiple groups of 10. I don't mind hiking with large groups with people that are nature conscience. By the way I will be bringing my 10 yo son ( ALA ) So if anyone wants to bring your kids that will be fine.

Cool, Bama..sounds like a good trip. Not sure about the kids or dog..I may have to fly right from there to California on business. We'll see, Grasshopper...

BAMA - you bring up a good point. In a book I have called "Abstract Wild" the author talks about taking a canyoneering trip in Utah. The plane crashes. It'll be a few days before anyone notices so they decide to explore. They come upon a cave that probably no white man has ever vistited. They find cave paintings and artifacts. He said that years later the cave was "discovered" and photographed. He went back for a visit and it wasn't the same because he didn't discover it, this time. He also talked about the Indian concept of not being too big on being photographed because it would take your soul. He made the connection that it's similar to those special places. If you don't work to get there, it's not the same.

On the same note, I remember the second time I went to Sipsey. It didn't have that same sense of awe and splendor that it did the first time. When I came back several trips later and bushwhacked West Bee branch that feeling came back. There were no trails, and I felt like I was discovering all over again. What a special place.

Have the plans for this trip been finalized yet? Which trailhead are we starting at?

What are the dates again? The 27th-29? I've got to order my football tickets and there is a game the weekend before that one. I just wanted to make sure that I didnt order tickets for the day of the trip.

Those are the dates I'm planning for. It's just around the corner, folks!

And to answer Rabbitman, I don't think there is any recognized plan besides "follow Bama".

Here's the trip plan Bama posted earlier, but we've never actually settled on one:

The date has not been set in stone yet. Several people had said the last weekend in Sept would be the best. I thought we could leave from the picnic area friday and do a bluff shelter with a mortor rock, 2 turkey foot falls, possibly a rainbow, cross country to fall creek falls, camp off trail near the marker tree, Saturday maybe do salt peter wells, big tree, back up to clifty creek canyon to camp then Sunday down borden creek back to pinic area. If any one would like a longer trip I can provide shuttle to Thompson creek bridge and they can hike down to Picnic area to meet us Friday.

Just a thought.

It still looks like a good plan to me.

Yea the above post is a good place to start. We can leave the picnic area on friday the 27, Ya'll pick a time, and kinda wing it from there. I can provide shuttle earlier in the week if anyone wants to start sooner. I will be out of town bear hunting in Bridge Water Maine 8/23 - 9/4, So ya'll just make plans and I will follow.

Keep in mind If we have a lot of rain we wont be able to cross Sipsey just anywhere. Most of the time we don't have a lot of rain this time of year. Bummer for the waterfalls but it leaves more possibilaties for routes.

BTW, it's Randy Owens of Alabama, right? He and Bama do share a fair resemblance. I had a buddy in middle school that also looks pretty close to them both.

It may be that with the path you've provided, Webshots site security will allow you to view the picture, but no one else. I've seen other people say that it can be difficult to get Webshots to allow an image to be embedded in a post.

Wow Miss Opie. I just saw myself bigger than Dallas. As far as looking like Randy, years ago when my hair was longer and I had a full beard I would hear that quite often. Now I can't have a full beard due to having to wear a resperator while dealing with chemicals. ( emergency response team )I have gotten fatter and wear my hair shorter so I don't hear that as often. If I get a chance I will scan a picture and send it to you. I think I even have one of us together. Randy has a daughter about the same age as mine. When she was born, people at the hospital thought I was her daddy. By the way His daughter and mine also resemble.
Randy is a nice guy. He does a lot of charity stuff that doesn't make the news.
