CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) -- Salvador Tapia returned to the Windy City Core Supply warehouse in which he had been fired six months ago and killed six of his former co-workers, police said Wednesday.

Tapia, 36, was then shot and killed in the last of three gunbattles with police, said acting police superintendent Phil Cline.”

Police Say 10 People Were Throwing Tomatoes At Cars

MILLERSBURG, Ohio -- The Holmes County Sheriff's Office said someone fatally shot a man for throwing tomatoes at his car.

Steven Keim, 23, was hit with several shotgun blasts about 11:30 p.m. Monday. The man, from Apple Creek in neighboring Wayne County, was declared dead at a hospital early this morning.

Authorities said about 10 people ages 15 to 23 were throwing tomatoes and firing paintball guns at passing cars from a corn field on state Route 241 near Mount Hope.


Members of the group told deputies that the driver of a luxury car stopped when a tomato hit it and threatened that he would shoot if it happened again. The driver then turned around, passed the group and was struck again with tomatoes.

Deputies said the car returned about a half hour later, and the driver got out with a shotgun and started shooting.

“SAN DIEGO, California (AP) -- A 14-year-old boy jogging with his high school cross-country team was shot and killed in an ambush by his father, who later killed himself after a standoff with police, authorities said.

The shooter stepped out from behind a parked van Thursday afternoon to fire the first several shots at the boy, then reloaded his pistol and fired again as pedestrians and the running team fled, witnesses and police said.

No one else was injured, but the gunman, identified by police as the boy's father, fled by car into a home about a mile away where he spent nearly 10 hours in on-and-off negotiations with police.

The 53-year-old man, whose name was not released, shot himself once in the head at 1:40 a.m. Friday and was pronounced dead, said Sgt. Richard Nemetz of the San Diego Police Department.

Witnesses and neighbors identified the 14-year-old victim as Evan Nash.

About a dozen members of the Point Loma High School cross-country team were jogging about 3 p.m. in the quiet community of Ocean Park when the shooting occurred, police said.

Two neighboring schools were briefly locked down and grief counselors were called to the Point Loma campus.

Police were investigating the domestic circumstances of the victim's father. There were reports the victim's parents had separated and were dealing with "custody issues," police spokesman Dave Cohen said.

“(CNN) -- An 8-year-old Florida boy left in critical condition after an apparent murder-suicide involving his father and three siblings died Tuesday, a hospital official said.

Bryan Randall was critically injured Monday morning when his father, Bryan Christopher Randall, drove his SUV into the path of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 4 in Lake Mary, near Orlando. (Full story)

The elder Randall died. Another son, Julian, 6, was injured in the crash.

Two other Randall children, 4-year-old Regal and 2-year-old Yana, were found in a pond Sunday in the Orlando suburb of Maitland. Regal, a boy, was barely alive and is in a hospital in critical condition. Yana, a girl, was dead.

Police believe the events were part of a murder-suicide plot by the father, who left behind a handwritten note in the front seat of the SUV.

"Dearest family and friends, 'Why?' must be the question on your minds, the following are the reasons, I made too many mistakes, I would not allow those beautiful children to grow up in the manner in which you had raised them, I didn't get the latest job. ..." Lake Mary police Chief Richard Beary read from the letter at a news conference Monday.

Beary said the note told authorities whom they should notify in case of the father's death, and indicated that the father wanted his and the childrens' bodies cremated and the ashes mixed together.

"It's just a terrible tragedy. You have a family that's been destroyed and the children, they're going to be devastated. This defies explanation. You can't rationalize this," Beary said.

The children's mother, Lisa Randall, 41, told authorities she had left the children with their father Friday and that he was to return them Sunday.

The mother and father had been married for 10 years but were getting a divorce.

“(AP) A gunman who allegedly tried to hijack a car was apparently no better at driving it than he was at maneuvering his original vehicle: a tricycle.

He also wasn't very handy with the gun.

Oswaldo Valenciano, 24, was arrested Tuesday and will be booked at the Marion County (Ore.) Jail on felony charges, Lt. Dan Cary said.

Police were called after receiving reports that a man on a tricycle had been firing gunshots and had slammed into a car, Cary said.

"The tricycle pilot picked himself up and demanded to be taken to the hospital," Cary said. But the driver of the car, Marion Rodriguez, tried to persuade Valenciano to call 911, Cary said.

"At this point, Valenciano opens the rear car door and hops into the back seat of Mr. Rodriguez's car, demanding to be taken to the hospital," Cary said.

"Mr. Rodriguez gets out of his car and starts asking people to call 911. Valenciano then gets out, mounts his trike — and promptly falls over."

At that point, a police car arrived, prompting Valenciano to abandon his tricycle and get into the front seat of Rodriguez's car, still armed with his handgun, according to police.

INDIANOLA, Iowa -- A federal agent accused of chasing down a pickup truck full of high school boys and threatening them with a loaded gun is slated to stand trial next week in Warren County.

Jon Petersen, 41, of Indianola, is the former head of the Iowa Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives office. He faces a felony and 13 misdemeanors in the September 2002 confrontation.

Jury selection begins Monday.

According to court records, Peterson believed the boys were going to vandalize his yard as part of a homecoming prank.

Petersen's attorney said he was just doing his job. Mark Pennington said under Iowa law, peace officers are authorized to pursue arrests if they believe that a crime has been or will be committed.

County Attorney Gary Kendell said Petersen was drunk and crossed the line.”

“(AP) A man with two handguns opened fire Thursday at a trucking company, killing two employees and wounding three, then fled in a van, authorities said. Police later arrested a former employee of the company at a truck stop 50 miles away in Indiana.

Indiana State Police identified the man arrested as Tom West, who, according to West Chester police, had worked for the trucking company until 2001 and had been named a suspect in the shootings.

West had not been charged as of Thursday morning. Authorities said his appearance matched the suspect's description down to the green jacket he was wearing.

The attack began shortly before 10 a.m. Thursday. A man in his 50s drove through a security checkpoint at Watkins Motor Lines in an industrial park in suburban Cincinnati, then walked inside and began shooting at five men in an office of the company's mechanics area, West Chester Police Capt. Police said Donald Winniewicz, 36, gave an explanation, but they declined to release it or details of the tape's contents.

Winniewicz admitted making the tape recording and playing it once as the boy tried to sleep on or around Halloween, court documents said.

His wife, Nancy, found the tape in a file drawer in the family's home earlier this month and played it, hearing her husband's voice telling the older boy to strangle the couple's preschooler son or smother him with a pillow, court documents said

She copied the tape and contacted police.

She told officers the older boy had previously told her he had heard voices in his sleep, authorities said.

ELYRIA, Ohio -- An 11-year-old girl found a loaded gun in a used car, and her family wants disciplinary action taken against the former police chief who owns it, reported NewsChannel5.

Houssain Mishkin, of Grafton, said his daughter, Layla, found a loaded .38-caliber revolver in a 1998 Toyota Camry he purchased two weeks ago.

The car was bought at Twining Auto Sales, and was formerly owned by former Oberlin Police Chief Robert Jones, who worked for the department for 30 years.

According to an Elyria police report, Jones lost track of the gun and it was left in the back pouch of the car's seat when he sold it.

Four months later, Mishkin purchased the car, and his daughter pulled the gun out of the pouch while the family was on the road."”

Firing nine rounds from two handguns, a 53-year-old Rancho Cordova woman fended off an intruder Thursday night after he crashed through her sliding glass door. William Kriske, a 47-year-old parolee, was treated for a gunshot wound to the arm, then taken to jail and arrested on suspicion of burglary and resisting arrest, according to Sacramento County Sheriff's Sgt. Lou Fatur.

"It was one of those nights. I have a few holes in my glass out front," Carolyn Lisle said Friday.

"That's OK, I don't think he'll be back," said Lisle, who emptied one .357 revolver at the intruder before she retrieved a second one and he crashed through another window to flee. "I was trying to miss my furniture. Priorities, right?" Lisle said.

Lisle, shaken but spirited, recounted her night that started as a quiet evening of TV with three friends and two dogs in her living room.

At about 9 p.m., a noise at the sliding door prompted a male visitor to get up to investigate, but Lisle dashed to a back room to get one of her guns.

"I knew it couldn't be good," Lisle said.

When the intruder shattered the glass, Lisle's three guests fled from the house. Lisle stood her ground and opened fire.

"He was like a mosquito hitting the window. Every time he turned around, poweee," she said.

Lisle wasn't sure the intruder was alone so she nervously watched her back as she squeezed off rounds.

When she emptied one gun, she still hadn't hit him. And he wasn't gone.

"He was still in the garage, flitting around," she said.

She went to get another gun -- "I like to be prepared," she said -- and waited to see his next move. After tearing up the garage, he finally broke out through a garage window, but he veered toward Lisle's front door. She fired again, hitting him at least once.

The bleeding intruder ran across the street and tried to hot-wire a motorcycle, but its owners, already armed to come to Lisle's aid, chased off the would-be thief, she said.

She said one of the men yelled after the retreating burglar: "And that's just our womenfolk."

A California Highway Patrol officer stopped the suspect a short distance away and sheriff's deputies arrested Kriske.

Lisle is still puzzled why someone would break into a well-lit living room with four people and two dogs.

"It was like he was out to hurt someone," she said.

Fatur said a prowler had been reported moving through neighborhood back yards at about the time Lisle's house was invaded.

Lisle, who said her guns are registered, will not face criminal charges, Fatur said. California law allows someone to use deadly force whenever a reasonable person believes an intruder poses a threat to kill.

Lisle is the second homeowner in the Sacramento area this year to use deadly force against an intruder. In January, a Sacramento man shot and killed one of two armed intruders who broke into his home. He wasn't charged.

Lisle is pretty sure where she stands: "You need protection in this day and age."

A retired state worker who once worked as a correctional officer, she did admit that she hadn't been to a shooting range lately: "After last night, I might go once in a while."”
