“Arming teachers isn't the answer. Anyone that takes a weapon into a school, especially a hand gun is, in my opinion, a few cans short of a six pack. With the exception of the most recent incidents, most school shootings occur in high schools (I believe).

I feel that parents need to be involved more in the lives of their children. I remember the parents of the 2 kids that shot up Columbine saying they had no idea their kids were planning this. Okay, why not is the question I raise. So you work 2 jobs to put food on the table. That to me is not an excuse and if it is, you better examine your priorities. Parents today are more selfish than ever, myself inculded. High speed internet, 60" plasma TV's, fancy cars and just a few of the items that make us selfish. WE don't need this #&%!$, we want it. While we spend 10 to 12 hours a day at work trying to pay off all this crap, Johnny and Timmy and blowing away kids that teased them at school.

It comes to Someone Has to do something. Right after Columbine we had a teacher in the news who was leaving the school when two or three scum were coming in. They told him to leave. He went to his car (two blocks away) drew his sidearm and ended the potential problem.”

“Cujo - but to jump into the thread title here - the NRA actively campaigns to stop ANY look at whether there is a problem with guns. No politician is prepared to take them on, so nothing ever gets done.

but you hear it time and time again, guns don't kill people,... cars are more dangerous.

It's like saying spinach doesn't kills people, e-coli kills people, and yet the stores rapidly took the spinach off the shevles after the latest scare.

I love the US and I choose to live here and I pay my taxes here. Guns will never be 'outlawed' in America, but maybe, sometime gun owners need to realize that the right to bear arms comes with a responsibility and to some extent a cost.

That cost is that because it's easy for you to get a gun, it's easy for everyone to get a gun and so you'll see kids and crazies getting hold of them.
Wounded Knee makes a good point, about dealing with the roots of the voilence problem.
But in the meantime lets make this comparison with the war on terror. Sure in the long run it's better to spread democracy across the middle east, but in the meantime you have to act to stop WMDs getting into the hands of terrorists.

Sure we'd like to solve the problems that make people want to go and do thise stuff, but in themeantime, maybe it's right to make it a little harder for the crazies to get the tools to do it.

What we have is a difference of experience. In England if you use a gun you go to prison for ....LIFE till you die. Their prisons are no where near as pussified as ours. They are cold, dank and very uncomfortable. In the US you get life that means..until you can convince the parole board you are not dangerous.

Y2 years ago my inlaws had a neighbor who was a close friend of mine. In 1980 the neighbors Good for nothing boy shot (execution style) a police officer leaving two children and a widow.
Junior got LIFE in 1996 he got parole. In 1997 he was robbing a gas station at night. An officer drew down, junior reached into his pocket. The officer put a pattern of three shots in the DEAD center of the chest of Junior.
His father was raising hell one afternoon when he made the comment,"DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE POLICE DID???"
I looked at him and said,"Concluded the case 18 years late?"”
