OCEAN COUNTY, New Jersey (CNN) -- New Jersey authorities have identified a body as that of a police officer suspected of going on a shooting spree Tuesday night in two Ocean County, New Jersey, townships that killed five people and wounded two others.

Ocean County prosecutor Greg Sackowicz said officials have positively identified the body as Edward Lutes, a 15-year veteran of the Seaside Heights Police Department. He appeared to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a vehicle, Sackowicz said.

This has nothing to do with the NRA. It is the cops I tell ya. We need to ban all cops. No more police officers to protect and serve. That is what this means.

While we're at it five gallon buckets kill more childern by about 4 to 1 than guns, so I say be ban the buckets, hey that's a catchy slogan. Don't forget the pool in your neighbor's yard also kills 5 times more often than a firearm, better stop it too.

The first three victims included a neighbor who had been acquitted of sexually assaulting the shooter’s 9-year-old daughter two years ago and the wife who was baby-sitting her at the time and their son who answered the door. He then shot two other neighbors who testified as character witnesses at the trial.

As a father of three daughters, while I can’t condone his actions, I can at least understand them. If I truly believed someone had done such a thing to one of my babies, I’d have a hard time controlling myself (and I’m a pretty mellow person).

Brady Center Releases Comprehensive Report on Terrorism and Guns - Details How Terrorists Exploit Weak Gun Laws to Amass Firearms

(Washington, DC) The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence today released a new report that details how terrorists use weak gun laws to amass firearms in the United States. The document, entitled: "Guns and Terror: How Terrorists Exploit Our Weak Gun Laws," was released at a news conference on Capitol Hill, at which Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) and Jack Reed (D-R.I.) and Representative Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) called for stronger U.S. gun laws as a critical component of homeland security.

"This report makes one thing crystal clear: terrorists and guns go together," said Michael D. Barnes, President of the Brady Center. "Firearms are part of the essential tool kit of domestic and foreign terrorists alike. Guns are used to commit terrorist acts, and guns are used by terrorists to resist law enforcement efforts at apprehension and arrest.

"For terrorists around the world, the United States is the Great Gun Bazaar. When terrorist training manuals single out the U.S. for its easy access to firearms, and when gun runners testify that they 'have nothing like this at home,' we know we have a dangerous problem. Ensuring true 'homeland security' means combating the threat of terrorism in all its possible forms, with all its potential weapons - especially guns."

The report notes that, found among the mounds of rubble at a training facility in Afghanistan for a radical Pakistan-based Islamic terrorist organization, was a manual entitled "How Can I Train Myself for Jihad" containing an entire section on "Firearms Training." Tellingly, the manual singles out the United States for its easy availability of firearms and stipulates that al-Qaeda members living in the U.S. "obtain an assault weapon legally, preferably AK-47 or variations." Further, the manual sets forth guidelines for how would-be terrorists should conduct themselves in order to avoid arousing suspicion as they amass and transport firearms.

The report's release follows the recent acknowledgment by Attorney General John Ashcroft that he has refused a request by the FBI to use Brady Law criminal background check records to determine if any of 1,200 foreign nationals detained after the September 11 terrorist attacks had bought guns.

This special 30-page Brady Center report makes the case for stronger gun laws, and for better enforcement of existing laws, as an essential part of a comprehensive homeland security program. The report details specific cases involving terrorists and guns purchased in the U.S. In some instances, the perpetrators have been definitively linked to known terrorist organizations. In others, the perpetrators acted on their own, but were clearly intent on waging a campaign of terror against their targets. All of these cases illustrate weaknesses and loopholes in current law.

By examining in detail specific cases involving terrorists and guns, the report shows that:

· Gun shows are a breeding ground for gun sales to terrorists, because in most states, unlicensed sellers can sell guns without background checks.

· Nothing in federal law prevents terrorists from quickly amassing arsenals of weapons.

· The irresponsibility of the gun industry, as well as irrational statutory restraints on federal record keeping of gun sales and other necessary enforcement tools, allows corrupt gun dealers to funnel guns to terrorists.

· Loopholes in federal law have allowed terrorists to buy assault weapons and high-capacity military ammunition magazines.

· A loophole in federal law allows terrorists to buy "gun kits" through the mail that can be assembled into untraceable assault weapons.

In addition, the report proposes a specific agenda for reform of our nation's gun laws in the interest of national security, including:

· Requiring complete criminal background checks wherever a gun is sold, whether at a gun show, through classified ads or over the Internet.

· Retaining federal background check records and allowing reasonable access to those records by federal law enforcement.

· Limiting large-volume gun purchases to curb trafficking of guns to terrorists and criminals.

· Permanently reauthorizing the assault weapons ban.

The connection between terrorism and guns is undeniable. As America conducts its war on terrorism - at home and abroad - authorities must have the strongest possible mechanisms to root out terrorists before they strike. In short, they need the strongest possible gun laws. Our national security demands it.

Citizen's Militia and Guns
So, the radical Islam world wants to take down Israel and US. They use trucks, ambulances, hardware and farming materials. They have probably been sleeping for 10-20 years, living off the American economy and personal freedoms. They could wake up in our midst at any time. Somebody also has Anthrax in the highest weapons grade that the US has seen. It came from elsewhere. Afghan scientists hid nuclear materials from Al Queda, which was looking hard for such material to make dirty bombs.

Do you think Americans will be getting rid of the guns they already own or getting more guns and ammo? Who will it be, the radical right or the mainstream? Maybe we will be seeing more guns, not fewer. Will we end up like Switzerland, every adult male citizen is required to have and be proficient with a gun? Or maybe like the Israeli's with massive mandatory civil defense and military service?

You're right, GDE, I did stoop to your (extremely low) intellectual level by hurling insults. I'm ashamed of myself for losing control like that. I have lived with and around firearms for 48 years and neither I nor anyone I know has ever used a firearm illegally. I or any well-informed person could easily refute your ridiculous (and patently false) rantings gleaned from the pages of HCI and AGS, but people like you and the organizations whose unfounded blather you so mindlessly parrot do not like to be confused by the facts.

That really was an interesting article. I wonder what factor culture has to play in their mutual respect for each other and lack of crime. DOes or has any one here lived over there, who can discuss the culture.

I ask because some friends of mine visited Britain and noticed the unarmed police would approach unarmed youth and see them sitting on some one's car and they would say"come now, you know you aren't supposed to be there" and the youth would immediately hop off the car, and apologize. In America, the youth would glare at the cops, slower than molasses move off the vehicle, and make a big deal out how he did what he was told to do ("there, I got off that A****** car, are you happy now"). While the hooligans make the news from over there, apparently the culture instills some kind of manners.

So, anyways, I'm wondering how the culture works over there.

HCI and AGS
Hello, Stanlee. HCI was Handgun Control, Inc., founded by Sarah Brady after her husband was shot during the assassination attempt against Ronald Reagan. Due to bad press resulting from their anti-second amendment lies having been exposed for what they were, and the resulting loss of financial backing as embarrassed contributors dropped like flies, HCI reorganized and reincarnated itself as The Brady Campaign. Same people, same agenda.
AGS stands for Americans for Gun Saftey, another anti- second amnedment group founded and bankrolled by billionaire Andrew McKelvey. This guy is also the founder of Monster.com - firearms owners take note! This group, with the assistance of Senator John McCain, is responsible for, among other things, fabricating the existence of the 'gun show loophole', where terrorists and other evildoers (hello, Georgie) allegedly can buy firearms without background checks and wreak havoc upon civilized society. This notion has been thoroughly repudiated by others, so I will not go into it here. This website is not the forum for this kind of discussion, so this will be my last post on the subject here (stop cheering, Georgie).
If anyone desires further information on the subject, I will give you my e-mail address and provide you with the resources you can use to educate yourself and draw your own conclusions.

What article?
AAARRRGGGH! I lied. Uphill Klimber, what article are you talking about? Violent crime in England is spiraling out of control since the average citizen has been disarmed. The unarmed bobbie is a relic of the past. British cops are now carrying weapons to defend themselves against the heavily armed gangs who now prey upon defenseless citizens. Austrailians find themselves in the same boat for the same reasons.
