thrifty, do you use butcher paper to freeze things for a long time? I didn't think that was good, but strangely enough, a neighbor across the street that we never introducted ourselves to and they never introduced themselves to us when we moved here 3 years ago comes ringing our bell at 10:30pm!!! She says her freezer is broken, can we take some of her meat.

Well, the stuff is a ton of meat in butcher like paper that has blood on it. I told my husband that I would have told them to at least put it in something sanitary.

Then they don't even come the next day to take it. We run into them and they say they are getting a freezer the next day and still, they don't come for the meat. Finally they did. It's beef that they buy in bulk from somewhere. The bloody outside was creepy to me and was touching my frozen foods. I was pissed off my husband took that bloody meat in. After that, I refer to them as the bloody meat people.

You think after they lived here for most of their life they wouldn't have to come to strangers to take their bloody meat, but I bet it may be because we were the only ones crazy enough to answer the door. I was half asleep. When she asked if she could put her meat in our freezer, I had to ask her who she was.

Then I wondered where her husband was and if the meat was her husband, LMAO!! But my husband said he was there also, but I didn't see him.

wow....that's a lot to take in...i always just use plane old freezer bags...my grandpa cuts meet and uses butcher paper but that's only on the outside...he usually raps it in serane or something first

that sure is a strange way to meet your neighbors..."hey nice to "meat"(get it) you, here hold my meat"

Crystal Springs water.

But bygod, if I weren't so busy, I think I would go grab on of those thick juicy cheeseburgers they serve at the little joint around the corner.

thrifty, you gave me my 2nd laugh of the day. Nigal with his Pinto photo ad was the 1st, lol:)

My mom who lives in NY would always ask, "they still didn't take that meat???" I had to ask my husband exactly how long he would "hold the meat", before he inquired when they were taking it back. It was cramping my freezer space!

Fishermen use those machines that take the air out of special plastic bags to store fish when fishing is out of season.

What about that reduced price meat or poultry in grocery stores? I'm economical, but there is no way I'd buy old meat! And I don't mean on sale, I mean the stuff with the old expiration dates.

lipstick, you just solved your own problem...buy some of that old stinky meat and when your neighbor comes to claim their's, give them that instead

thrifty, I told my husband that after a point, if they didn't come get their meat, I was going to throw a piece out onto the driveway every day, LMAO, if he didn't get an answer as to when they were taking it.

He actually did give them a small pkg of our own chopmeat, but the guy was upset and said it wasn't his and it better not be, or else he would be mad at his wife for buying meat from a supermarket.

bit, you must like spices, because there is no way to eat that discounted meat without it. Another way is to put orange peels up your nose when you eat discounted meat, LMAO!!!!

I know people fall upon bad times or rough times, college, first low paying job, but I think even canned Chef Boy R Dee is better than discount meat????

I dunno what the deal was, but there was never anything wrong with this meat. I think it might have been overstock of cuts that don't sell fast. The stuff was even still red when we bought it. Of course, we only bought beef, and properly aged beef is more tender, due to the natural breakdown of muscle fibers (also known as rotting)

Yummm-my!

bit, I'm talking about not buying "discounted" meat because the expiration date it that day, not the on sale stuff which may be from overstock.

My husband ate a lot of canned tuna in his poor days and with franks with an egg on it. I think that's what he said. It's sounds weird now, but he likes eggs and franks. Peanut butter was another one.

He still loves tuna. I found a brand, I forget if it's Master's Choice that is the best I've seen for solid white and much better than Starkist which looks like chunk and Chicken of the Sea which I think used to be better when I was young.

We use butcher paper to wrap our venison. It works best. No freezer burn ever. So alittle blood seeps through the paper. It's frozen.
You think your supermarket saran wrapped meat isn't covered with meat juice? You just can't see it, Lipstick.

Lunch today: warm zucchini apple bread and black chai tea.

Bit,

Aging is not rotting. That is a process that is induced by bacteria.

Aging is a process where the enzymes break down the tissue. In addition, with dry aging, moisture is removed from the tissue allowing the flavors to concentrate.
chili36

chili, I have gone to restaurants with aged meat, but I think it's aged under certain conditions, not just old meat that's hanging around.

Sass, in the grocery store, the plastic wrap has no blood on it, so it's not the same. Even when buying store pkg meat, I grab a plastic fruit bag and slip it into that. The blood looked to be just on the outside and not coming from the inside, but anyway, if I bought meat in that form (bulk) and it came bloody, I would put them in plastic in my freezer.

Also, their frozen blood is on my frozen products that I will eventually touch and the unfrozen blood on my hands will become bacteria if I didn't clean my hands, so all this bloody meat tainted my frozen food pkgs on the outside.

Then I have a freezer that makes ice, so meat that may or may not have touched the ice has now tainted the ice, plus if the pkgs that got touched with the bloody meat touch the ice that has built up is now tainted. It was just wrong, plain old wrong to give someone meat in that condition without putting it in a plastic bag first.

THEN my husband says we should give our home number to a neighbor for when we are away. Right off I said the bloody meat people were OUT!!! If they have no common sense not to ring a door bell for 5 minutes to wake us up instead of going to the store and buying ice and inquiring in the a.m. for storage, I wouldn't not trust their judgement if our house was on fire or broken into.

I love meatloaf-- my parents never made it when I was growing up.

I usually make mine with the following:
a mix of ground hamburger/pork/turkey
Progresso Italian bread crumbs
brown gravy mix (mixed into the ground meat)
an egg
other spices...
Ketchup

It comes out really juicy that way (and the gravy mix binds the juices in.)

YUMMMMM

We had a fine time.

OOOOOOOO, I love mixes! I have one that I put together for the last West Virginia trip, but I did not make the trip. I should send you one of those.

Also, have you heard of this new guy...

For WK
I have heard of him and luckily he has an archived live performance on kexp.org. So as soon as I'm done listening to Damien Jurado's performance, I'll check him out.

If you can listen to streaming music WK, this station rocks. Most of the live in studio performances are archived and you can listen to the whole thing for free over the internet. It rocks. (Or you can listen to the station real time too.)
