Need advice
Some friends and I are starting to worry that our mid-May 48-mile trip along the Middle Fork of the Gila in New Mexico isn't going to work out.

It's increasingly likely the area will be (a) on fire (b) closed due to fire danger or (c) so dry there will not be any water in the River.

I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation on where we might be able to find a good 5-6 day, moderate hike in southwestern Colorado if New Mexico doesn't work out.

Thanks in advance,

I've never heard of the Middle Fork going dry. Even with fire restrictions, I haven't heard of them restricting stoves. Your greatest risk is full closure or all out fire.

How about the Weminuche Wilderness

We got all your rain. Every spring, hollow, and drainage is full. I love it. Arkansas Redneck.

Weminuche Wilderness looks good as a plan B. Thanks for your help.

Weminuche
Ifyou are going in mid-May, the Weminuche will be completely covered with snow. It doesn't clear until the end of June (remember, it's 10-12,000'). For May, you might try the coastal range in California - either the area near Big Sur, or north of there in the Yolla Bolly or Trinities. That usually is open by the end of May. Northern Arizona would be a possibility - Grand Canyon or somewhere along the Mogollan Rim? Though that would be dry too. How about the Canyonlands in Utah? Grand Gulch? Paria Canyon? Zion or Bryce?
