Traficant Guilty on All Counts

They're a great bunch of people (mostly, <G>), but the institution needs some rehabilitation... security-wise, morale-wise, and reputations take time to rebuild.”

“Not speaking in Trafficant's defense, but I'll bet if each and every one in Congress was given the same type of probe as Jim, there would be many others losing their seat and going to jail for similar charges. As someone from W PA, I was always intrigued when I heard the man speak, he was a straight to the point, no BS and very abrasive kind of guy who said what was on his mind no matter what others thought. He is definitly NOT like most in congress who will say what they think others want to hear, regarding legislations and to get re-elected. Trafficant had been in office for quite a while, and that's because he did alot for his district, state and others. It's too bad he let the people down who needed, valued and got so much from his service.”

“I’m afraid I don’t buy into the “everyone else is doing it” mentality, Buddur. Traficant was indicted and tried in the early 80’s on bribery charges involving the Mafia. He was acquitted despite signed confessions and wiretaps but lost a civil case for failing to pay income taxes on $163,000 in bribes. Seems they finally succeeded in making the charges stick this time around.

He is certainly a colorful character but anyone with his criminal record should be barred from public office.”

“Violin is right. This guy is as close to scum as you can get. When he was Mahoning County Sherrif, they busted him on attempting to buy drugs, caught him red handed. He acted as his own attorney. His defense was, get this, he was a one man sting operation, working alone to bust the drug dealers. A jury of his peers (they certainly aren't my peers) aquitted him.
