“I'm thinking about taking a job in Flagstaff, AZ, but I don't know much about the area. Any opinions on this place? Anybody visted or lived there? What's the quality of life like? Good, bad, ugly -- all thoughts all very much appreciated.” 8:44:18 PM 4/11/02 9:09:39 PM 4/11/02 “Standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona Such a fine sight to see It's a girl MY LORD in a blackbed Ford Slowing down to take a look at me Take it EASY take it eeeeeeeasy” 9:25:54 PM 4/11/02 “Are you a guy? Do you like chics in Rockies and Ropers?” 9:26:57 PM 4/11/02 “uhhhhh...maybe I should specify more about myself. Female, 26. Any opinions from that perspective?” 9:36:28 PM 4/11/02 “Nowslimmer, thanks for some new websites. I've done a bunch of online research and everything i read seems pretty cool, but i know even the Chamber of Commerce in Fargo makes North Dakota sound like the land of milk and honey. I'm just trying to gather as much information as I can before making any huge decisions.” 9:46:11 PM 4/11/02 “Where are you going to be working? Gore? the post office? not much else in Flagstaff” 9:48:44 PM 4/11/02 “skyblue, where would you be moving from? I am moving to AZ from Minnesota. and can't wait... I can't wait to have all that great hiking near me, and of course the Canyon... so do you WANT to move to Flagstaff?” 9:58:38 PM 4/11/02 “Fargo has NDSU.” 10:01:41 PM 4/11/02 “I stopped in Flagstaff once on the way to the Canyon. Stayed there one night on the way back. It's not near the size of Pheonix but it's got anything youd need. Lots of great hiking in the area. It's a bit cool even in the Summer but If I HAD to live in Arizona, I'd rather live there than the desert areas. Flagstaf even has a gear store. Can't remember the name though. Good Luck!” 10:09:29 PM 4/11/02 You Betcha! “Meant no offense to fans o' Fargo! As far as if I want to move to Flagstaff -- let's just say I'm making a career sacrifice to look search for a bit of personal happiness. I just don't want to search for happiness in a hellhole (again, no offense meant to Fargoites...Fargovians... whatever.)” 10:11:30 PM 4/11/02 “I haven't been there since the mid 90's but from what I have heard it and surrounding communities like Sedona and Williams have gotten a little trendy and spendy though the years. Kinda like what happened to Boulder, Colo. to many Cali transplants and spiritual chasers. Biz you'll find fresher meat at the market.” 10:13:01 PM 4/11/02 "look search" “choose whichever word you prefer” 10:14:37 PM 4/11/02 “Oh, and I'll be moving from North Carolina, but staying here is not an option.” 10:17:58 PM 4/11/02 “Mary Phyl (who has been conspicuously absent here) lives in Cameron/Flagstaff area. Good place, great access to the outdoors and very mild compared to other part of AZ. College town, railroad history, Rt. 66, the Grand Canyon etc. Tough to complain living there!” 10:20:07 PM 4/11/02 “Don't forget that big dang Meteror Crator. I'd like to take a strol down and around that thing.” 10:21:51 PM 4/11/02 “I should add that it is surrounded by pine forests and high country. Sedona is not far and great hiking and bicycling. Here is an NAU webcam to check out in the daylight. Northern Arizona Univerity Cam I almost went to college there.” 10:25:32 PM 4/11/02 “And who wouldn't want to move to a meteor crater? I mean those things never strike the same place twice, right?” 10:25:38 PM 4/11/02 “They should point that webcam up at night. I've heard the stars there are incredible. It's the only town I know of with light pollution laws. Gotta give a town respect for that.” 10:29:55 PM 4/11/02 “OH YEAH! The sky out there is unblievable at night!” 10:32:48 PM 4/11/02 “Wear your sunscreen. I can't believe how much skin cancer we see in NM and AZ. And a big floppy hat. Nothing like skin thats been irradiated for 20 or 30 years.” 10:34:55 PM 4/11/02 “Humphrey's Peak is just north of there (highest point in the state). We were going to do it but it was on fire at the time.” 10:38:27 PM 4/11/02 “yeh fire, hehahehahehahehahea, yeh Fire! -Cornholeo” 10:51:36 PM 4/11/02 “- Female, 26. Any opinions from that perspective?" - Minnesota - Female, 26. - I've done a bunch of online research - Fargo name - skyblue (Dreaming) Hmmmm. Sounds intelligent and educated. Either paints pottery or is a computer programmer. Probably educated at NDSU. Maybe we have some things in common. Perhaps White Bear Lake, Bald Eagle Lake, or St. Louis Park. Maybe the BWCA, Cass Lake, Pike Bay, Rainy Lake, Little Boy Lake, Pequot Lake, etc. How 'bout bowling, billiards, backpacking, darts, disk golf, dinner, dancing? Ouch! (climbs back in the chair, now awake) How soon do you plan to move? Must it be to AZ? The Space Center here in FL can use some good people. And there is always hiking at Mt. Dora, FL. There are no snow drifts here. How 'bout a cup of coffee in the Mall of the Americas next month, with me and one or two of my daughters? Maybe we can discuss some mutual things and convince you to move to FL. Oops, guess I fell asleep again and went back to dreaming. nowslimmer ---------------------- - Oh, and I'll be moving from North Carolina In that case, make it coffee in Ashville. I'll be in and out of the GSMNP backpacking for 9 days in early May, before heading for IA and MN. Boy, can I dream. (At my age we do a lot of sleeping and dreaming!) BTW, I seem to recall a very long bar in Flagstaff, reminiscent of the old western days.” 11:24:34 PM 4/11/02 “skyblue, I visited Flagstaff 9 years ago when my oldest was 8 months old. My husband and I stayed at the Quality Suites hotel which was very nice at the time. There is a lot of scenery that is very different from what you see in the east. You should take a trip to see if you can make a life there.” 7:26:38 AM 4/12/02 “The Museaum Club ('the zoo') is a nice red-neck bar in Flagstaff!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahahahahahaha ehem Everything posted above is correct. It's a nice place, you should move there.” 7:32:36 AM 4/12/02 “Been to Flagstaff twice and loved it. Lots of nice hiking trails nearby, lots of good MTB'ing trails, and great skiing. Being at a higher altitude, ~7000' I think, it's cooler in the summer than most other places in Az. Flagstaff is definitely on my list of places I'd rather live, right behind Bend Or.” 7:34:49 AM 4/12/02 “I've been to Flagstaff a couple of times. It's a nice place place; close to the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, and some cool desert places. Sedona, down the river (Cottonwood??) is nice too, but they get a huge exodus from Phoenix and it turned into a zoo! There was, literally, a line of traffic up I-17 and countless vehicles overheated on the shoulder. It looked like some post-apoclyptic B-movie scene.” 7:57:04 AM 4/12/02 “I, too, have been there and loved it. My wife and I were trying to find ways to move. We went there as part of our honeymoon. There is/was a place there that serves 3 inch steak. I loved that place! I have webcams out there bookmarked so I can vist from time to time...” 10:44:36 AM 4/12/02 “My brother lives there. It's one of those college towns people never leave and move on with their lives. It's very livable, but you have to be ready to deal with self-important college kids.” 11:21:11 AM 4/12/02 2:20:50 PM 4/12/02 “Let's try it again: Monthly averages in Flagstaff If it doesn't work, go to www.weather.com, plug in Flagstaff and click on averages and records.” 2:39:56 PM 4/12/02 “I would say that Flagstaff will suit you better if you are used to NoCal. Phoenix and Tuscon are hell holes. (Hi, Biz)” 2:39:57 PM 4/12/02 “From the feedback I'm getting here I'm pretty psyched about making a move. My biggest concern is the high rent, but I guess I'll just have to visit rei oulet less often :( s***bird brings up a good point -- any opinions on the people there? Don't wanna move any place with a bunch o' mean poo-heads.” 8:18:45 PM 4/12/02 “Can't help ya there. I wasn't there long enough to meet anyone. I do believe Mary Phyl lives around there. She's cool. Flagstaff don't seem like "The Hood" at all.” 8:22:56 PM 4/12/02 “Mary Phyl are you out there anywhere?” 8:33:41 PM 4/12/02 “Hi--I'm home. I had to be in Phoenix all week. I'm a fourth generation Flagstaff person. It is spendy to live here. You have to want to because the standard of living will not be as high as some places. When I saw my mountain coming back from Phoenix yesterday I went aaaah :) I love this place--my mom always told me that it is the center of the universe and I believe her.” 10:21:31 PM 4/12/02 “Welcome Home!” 8:19:17 AM 4/13/02 “MaryPhyl, glad you're back. Four generations, eh? Must mean there's somethin' good in Flagstaff! Can you tell me a little bit about the scene? Do people act like a community or do they keep to their own worlds? Sounds like there's some great outdoor opportunities to be had (very excited about this) what about other activities -- festivals, music, that kind of stuff? Thanks for any input.” 9:21:13 PM 4/13/02 “Well, I'm not much of a joiner--we tend to keep to ourselves. In our neighborhood we know everybody for what that's worth. The local paper says there are lots of community things to do here. We have a university and two observatories and a couple of museums and half a dozen parks and a group for every cause imaginable. http://www.azdailysun.com/news/ I'm afraid I'm not much help!!” 2:55:50 PM 4/14/02 “There is a microbrewery festival at the fairgrounds in August every year (bunch of granolas from NAU). The rodeo comes to town over Labor Day.. And in the summer the town is invaded by people from Phoenix trying to escape the hellhole heat (yup, hi Dun). Gear slut hit the nail on the head, if you like hiking, mtn biking, skiing and I will add fly fishing, you will probably like Flagstaff. My brother and his girlfriend live there, they do a little windsurfing on the lake and the Grand Canyon is closeby (2 hours away). It is totally unpretentious (unlike Sedona). I would live there if there was a job for me there. My brother has an engineering degree and he is a driver for UPS if that tells you anything.” 11:13:57 AM 4/17/02 “Flagstaff, hmmm been by there quite a few times. Stopped once! I was pulling this junky trailer. The Police pulled me over and told me to get off the highway. I was already running out of gas. And about to run out of money, so I pulled into a resturant. I do not remember which one. Ordered a burger and a coke. Spent the last of my change on the tip. Called my Pops told him where I was. Went back out to the parking lot and went to sleep. In the morning my Dad came driving into the parking lot, threw that junkie trailer on his vehicle and filled up my gas tank and off we went. Now with that memory, the addition is.. I thought then, it was very beautiful country. And I would love to backpack or hike it. So if anyone plans a trip there. Count me in!” 12:36:30 AM 4/18/02
