Internal, about 4400 cu.in. I figure that's enough room and all of it is going inside. Iffin' I can't close it, I've got too much stuff. And I don't want nothing hanging outside, unless of course, I'm drying something. With no frame hanging out, I don't catch anything, like branches, on the frame. It's like an extra jacket in the winter to keep me warm, in the summer, I'll loosen it to cool off and tighten it for rock hopping.

I remember Alpine Designs.

A friend of mine had one of their tents in the '70s.

It was like a little Tee-Pee with three straight poles that meet at a little aluminum muffin at the peak.

They made some cool stuff and in Colorado or California.

I'm wondering what kind of pack Marvin has. Of course, he probably doesn't need a pack, the aliens kidnap so early in his trips that he has learned to go without a pack.

external. Gotta have the ventilation. Got turned off to internals in the Army whent they had us carry the "new generation" (ca. 1991) internal. Hard to pack & sweatty on the back. I'm sure they've come a long way, and if my Kelty Tioga gives out, I'll shop both.

Has anyone purchased a Kelty 50-year anniversary external frame pack and used it? I'd like to hear any recommendations.

Last weekend, I used an external frame pack on a backpacking trip for the first time in 20 years. It was a Camp Trails Spirit II that I customized myself. I replaced the hipbelt with a 1986 Gregory internal frame belt that I already had. This belt has a lot of surface area and is not thickly padded which is what I wanted to maintain a lively feel. I modified it to my own hip cant by trimming the back and resewing it. I also sewed on a double buckle arrangement just like a McHale pack with camlock buckles so it conforms perfectly and does not slip at all. I also reworked the shoulder harness by adding new stabilizer straps that mount higher on the pack.
The most striking thing I noticed with the higher center of gravity is that it felt like there was less pressure on my legs than with most internal frame packs. Stability is not a problem either because of the custom fit and reworked suspension. The bottom line is that the pack can carry loads that would crumble the majority of internal frame packs because their frames are just too weak to begin with. It retains all the good qualities of an external frame, mainly organization and ventilation. For less than a $100 investment, I'm a convert for anything except skiing and tight bushwhacking with it.

External frames take up to much space...my internal sits in a corner of a closet waiting for the next trip.
